Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry

Temporal and spatial variability in speakers with Parkinson's Disease and Friedreich's Ataxia
Speech variability in groups of speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and with Friedreich's ataxia was compared with healthy controls. Speakers repeated the same phrase 20 times at one of two rates (fast or habitual). A non-linear analysis of variability was performed which used some of the principles behind the spatio-temporal index (STI). The STI usually employs variation in lip displacement over repetitions of the same utterance and a linear analysis of such signals is conducted to represent the combined variation in spatial and temporal control. When working with patients, audio measures (here we used speech energy) are preferred over kinematics ones as they are minimally disruptive to speech. Non-linear methods allow spatial variability to be estimated separately from temporal variability. The results are tentatively interpreted as showing that PD speakers were distinguished from healthy control speakers in spatial variability and ataxic speakers were distinguished from controls in temporal variability. These findings are consistent with the speech symptoms reported for these disorders. We conclude that the non-linear analysis using the speech energy measure is worth investigating further as it is potentially revealing of the differences underlying these two pathologies
Monitoring Potential Agricultural Cold Disaster Area by Multi-factors Correctional ASTER LST A case study in the Shanwei, Southern China
Much more importance is attached to the application of remote sensing technology in such as on disaster monitoring and fast disaster loss evaluation, which can improve the ability of disaster prevention, resistance and reduction. Temperature is one of the most important environment factors that influence the crop growth. In winter, the economic damage of the cash crops is often caused by the cold disaster. The objective of this study is to model the potential spatial distribution of cold disaster by temperature retrieved by ASTER. data and corrects it with the terrain factors. Based on the characters of subtropical climate, topography, vegetation and the ASTER data in Shanwei region, we find out the Thermal IR-emissivity model can separate the surface radiance into temperature and emissivity. Using this method, the spatial distribution map of land surface temperature (LST) is obtained by calculating the clear-sky day-time LST of ASTER data in Shanwei. The calculation result is matched with established DEM from 1:250000 topographic data and has also been validated by the data of ground synchronized observation. Analytical results indicate that the spatial LST distribution map made by the ASTER satellite remote sensing in this research is coherence with the terrain and data of ground observation in a good precision for showing the potential spatial distribution of cold disaster degree of cash crops in winter season, Southern China, such as litchi. ASTER data produced LST is a more effective factor of temperature regionalization in spatial planning than ones from the limited meteorological observation stations at present and has a better precision
Wave system fitting: A new method for force measurements in shock tunnels with long test duration
Force measurements in shock tunnels are difficult due to the existence of vibrations excited by a sudden aerodynamic loading. Accelerometer inertia compensation could reduce its negative effect to some extent, but has inherent problems. A new signal decomposition method, wave system fitting (WSF), is proposed to remove vibration waves of low frequency. The WSF is accelerometer-free. It decomposes the balance signal and can separate vibration waves without the influence on the DC component, and it does work no matter the cycle of the sample signal is complete or not. As a standard signal post-processing tool in JF-12, the application results show that it works reliably with high accuracy, and it can also explain puzzling signals encountered in JF-12. WSF method is especially useful and irreplaceable whenever only a few cycles of a periodic signal could be obtained, as is usual for shock tunnels. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
