“Resorting to Huang Lao” and “Non-Being” ── Comparative Study of Han Fei and Wang Bi's Interpretation of Lao Tzu's philosophy
Han Fei is a descendent of former aristocracy who livedduring
the Warring States Period, while Wang Bi livedduring the Late Han.
Although separated by six hundredyears, they have both left us with
annotations dealingwith the philosophy of Lao Tzu. Han Fei
wrote"Interpretation of Lao Tzu" and "Expounding Lao
TzuMetaphorically," while Wang Bi is known for "Annotating onLao
Tzu." In their annotations of Lao Tsu's texts theysuggested new
interpretations and systems of thought. HanFei became leading
legalist of Xian Qin period, and WangBi laid the foundation of
metaphysics school of Wei & JinDynasty. Lao Tzu was interpreted
differently by Han Feiand Wang Bi. Han relied on method of
"comparing and examining," while Wang emphasized
"comprehending and let aside words." Han's argument is "in the
Beginning there was Universe" and then "Tao". On the other hand,
Wang held that Tao comes "before the Beginning of the Universe."
Han maintains that law is essential while for Wang the essentialthe
Universe." Han maintains that law is essential while for Wang the
essential is Wu (Non being).Han believed that "inactivity activated
all deeds", while Wang countered by asserting "inactivity is
activation".Thus, Han's philosophy helped establish autocratic
empires since the Qin and Han dynasties. Wang's interpretation of
Lao Tzu helped introduce the Buddhist philosophy during the Sui
and Tang dynasties

From the soil, the foundations of Chinese society: a translation of Fei Xiaotong's Xiangtu Zhongguo ; with an introduction and epilogue by Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng
This classic text by Fei Xiaotong, China's finest social scientist, was first published in 1947 and is Fei's chief theoretical statement about the distinctive characteristics of Chinese society. Written in Chinese from a Chinese point of view for a Chinese audience, From the Soil describes the contrasting organizational principles of Chinese and Western societies, thereby conveying the essential features of both. Fei shows how these unique features reflect and are reflected in the moral and ethical characters of people in these societies. This profound, challenging book is both succinct and accessible. In its first complete English-language edition, it is likely to have a wide impact on Western social theorists.Gary G. Hamilton and Wang Zheng's translation captures Fei's jargonless, straightforward style of writing. Their introduction describes Fei's education and career as a sociologist, the fate of his writings on and off the Mainland, and the sociological significance of his analysis. The translators' epilogue highlights the social reforms for China that Fei drew from his analysis and advocated in a companion text written in the same period
Table1_Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule alleviates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice through modulating gut microbiota.DOCX
Introduction: Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule (BFHX) has been used to treat pulmonary fibrosis (PF) in clinic. However, the mechanism of Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule on pulmonary fibrosis remains unclear. Recent studies have shown that the changes in gut microbiota were closely related to the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. Modulating gut microbiota provides new thoughts in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis. Methods: In this study,a mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis was induced using bleomycin (BLM) and treated with Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule. We firstly evaluated the therapeutic effects of Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule on pulmonary fibrosis model mice. Besides, the anti-inflammatory and anti- oxidative effects of Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule were evaluated. Furthermore, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to observe the changes in gut microbiota in pulmonary fibrosis model mice after Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule treatment. Results: Our results showed that Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule significantly reduced the collagen deposition in pulmonary fibrosis model mice. Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule treatment also reduced the levels and mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibited the oxidative stress in lung. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule affected the diversity of gut microbiota and the relative abundances of gut microbiota such as Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, and Romboutsia. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated the therapeutic effects of Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule on pulmonary fibrosis. The mechanisms of Bu-Fei-Huo-Xue capsule on pulmonary fibrosis may be associated with regulating gut microbiota.</p

Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title
