    Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer

    This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title

    碩士依目前可靠的文獻成果,「內聖外王」首見於《莊子》〈天下〉篇。而歷代對於《莊子》的詮釋,經常傾向於帝王式的事功之論,來衡定其學說對於時代人生的價值。例如早在荀子就已指出「莊子蔽於天而不知人」,批評莊子是「由天謂之道,盡因矣」,認為莊子只是消極的聽天由命,而忽略人自身主體性努力的重要。漢代司馬遷則說《莊子》「皆空語無事實……,其言洸洋自恣以適己,故自王公大人不能器之」;然而,宋代王安石亦謂「莊生之書,其通性命之分,而不以死生禍福累其心,此其近聖人也。……不足以及此,而陷溺於周之說,則其為亂大矣」。由此看來,顯見後人對於《莊子》的思想內蘊,有很大的爭議。時至今日,延伸為「《莊子》的無為治道論」、「以內聖外王為《莊子》之旨」等議題,對於莊學在政治學說的立論呈現極大的歧義。然而,《莊子》書中到底有無政治立論的主張,筆者以為,這不單是經典詮釋角度不一所產生的問題,更根本的,牽涉到《莊子》的分篇問題。倘若《莊子》思想所要展現的就是主體性人生價值之貞定,而不欲在客觀實有的禮樂形式做出規定,那麼,以「無為而治」、「內聖外王」這樣的觀點詮釋《莊子》思想,是否可以視為一種政治態度的立論? 就目前學界普遍的研究成果,不論就文獻上的可信度,或思想上的哲學價值而言,《莊子》內篇都較外、雜篇更具研究價值。更且,為了現實政治的需要,外、雜篇已雜揉許多黃老思想,這也與內篇無意於「政治形式」的訴求有所不同,二者在思想性格上呈現極大的差異。因此,本論文的研究範圍,將以《莊子》內七篇為主,旁及《莊子》外、雜篇及擇取歷代注疏《莊子》具有代表性之大家如郭象、成玄英、林希逸、釋憨山、王船山等人的論述,就其相關的研究成果和文獻加以對照參考。 是故,本論文將針對「內聖外王」一說在《莊子》思想中的可能涵義及定位,加以檢視和評估,並嘗試提出個人的觀點和心得。期盼能為學界相關義理之爭,理出一個頭緒,嘗試有所貢獻!On the basis of reliable research documents, Nei-Sheng-Wai-Wang(內聖外王) was first seen in the Tizn-Xia Chapter(天下篇) of Chuang Tzu. Scholars of past ages often study and appraise Chuang Tzu from “Emperor-Managing-the Empire”(帝王治術) perspective and thus lose sight of the significance of oneself making great efforts to get control of his destiny. For example, as early as in the Warring States Period(戰國時代), Xun Zi already pointed out Chuang Tzu was so passive as to let fate have its way and Si Ma-Chian(司馬遷) in Han Dynasty and Wang An-Shi(王安石) in Song Dynasty had similar views, too. Whether Chuang Tzu can be interpreted from the “Governing-by-Doing-Nothing-That-Goes-A gainst-Nature”(無為而治) outlook or we can just deem it the declaration of Chuang Tzu’s political thoughts, the real issue I think is basically dependent upon how researchers expound and carve out the book into three major parts. Because of the political need for administration, the Outer and Miscellaneous Chapters(外雜篇) of Chuang Tzu have mingled with Huang-Lao thought(黃老思想) and therefore are different from the Inner Chapters(內篇) which lay its stress on forming and nourishing one’s mind and true nature.     A study of the Allusions to Chuang Tzu in the reception of Su Shi's Poetry

    The world is a sea of books; all creations are based on the achievements of their predecessors. Su Shi has stated clearly his admiration for Chuang Tzu; we can understand the poetry of Su Shi with his remembrance and tribute to Chuang Tzu by exploring the phenomenon of allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi. Academic research has already found that Chuang Tzu is actually the practitioner of \ue2making articles as amusement\ue2 and Su Shi is in the same vein with a concrete manifestation of \ue2making poems as amusement\ue2 to show the freedom of artistic creation space. Scholars have proposed that the Outer and Miscellaneous Chapters of Chuang Tzu had been neglected by people was due to Su Shi. Through the practical concerns of the poetry of Su Shi in this study, we found that the poetry of Su Shi did not ignore the outer and miscellaneous chapters of Chuang Tzu, on the contrary, the degree of attention is no less than the Inner Chapters. Scholars have proposed that the phenomenon of allusions in the poetry of Su Shi is mostly into words. In this paper, however, the author proposes with examples and indicates that the allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi are not only into words but also a major feature of imaginative thinking in images. Through the discussion of the phenomenon of allusions to Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi in this paper, it can be observed that the acceptance and creative interpretation of Chuang Tzu in the poetry of Su Shi, the concrete practice of making the old things new, and the implicit beauty of the real meaning is implied. And further confirmed the comment of \ue2Dongpo stems from Chuang Tzu is nine out of ten\ue2 stated by Liu Xizai in Qing, as well as understand the specific connotation of "Peotry of Zizhan, with clear words in sleet and powder, are the poetry of Taoist\ue2 called by Liu Shipei

    《莊子》中孔子形象之定位究竟為何?歷來不乏討論,從詆毀醜化、文學莊化、儒門莊學、儒道融合等種種角度皆可言之,然這是否足以成為蓋棺定論?本論文站在各種前人見解之下企圖提出另一個觀點,此即把孔子完全納入莊學系統以進行無差別論述,以此,《莊子》與孔將不再是二,而是一。 但是,這並不表示將孔子的歷史形象排除,反之,論文將首先著眼於《莊子》是如何用運用歷史形象中的孔子,此即博學、教學、傳達的孔子歷史形象之運用。以此角度出發,論文嘗試將此孔子形象放在知、禮、命三者的莊學命題來討論,如此既能不忽略孔子之歷史形象,也不忽略孔子在莊學系統的融合。 使《莊子》中之孔子不被中國歷史上孔子的巨大權威影響,是本論文最大的努力之處。本文冀望還原《莊子》的孔子。What exactly is the image of Confucius in Chuang Tzu ? There have been many discussions throughout history, from defamation, Chuang-class literature, Chuang school of Confucian, to integration of Confucian and Taoism and so on. Nevertheless, can all these be sufficient to determine the issue? The study, based on various views of predecessors, attempts to raise another viewpoint, namely, completely classify Confucius to the system of Chuang school so as to carry out indiscriminate statements. Here, Chuang Tzu and Confucius will become an integrate one rather than separate two parts. However, this doesn’t mean that the historical image of Confucius would be eliminated. On the contrary, the study firstly focused on how Chuang Tzu employs the historical image of Confucius, that is, an erudite Confucius who teached and delivered his knowledge to others. From this aspect, the study tries to discuss the Confucian image together with propositions of Chuang school regarding to knowledge, etiquette and destiny. In this way, neither the historical image of Confucius nor the integration of Confucius with the system of Chuang school would be ignored. In the study, the author exerts all energies to make Confucius in Chuang Tzu free from great authority and influences of Confucius in Chinese history. It is expected that Confucius in Chuang Tzu could be restored here

    This thesis represents a first attempt to analyze Lao Tzu's main method of resolving the social and political problems in Ch'un Ch'iu and Warring States Periods. Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, suggested many solutions that could bring an end to the conflicts and to the ending of the disunity of China. Examples of these include the reform or abolishment of some ancient Chinese institutions as well as new principles for the enhancement and preservation of life. All these ideas were to become crystallised in Tao Te Ch'ing, which became an important religious text. In particular, the aspect of Lao Tzu's methods for solving the social and political problems of China in the Warring States Period needs more attention. In each chapter of the Tao Te Ch'ing there was a main emphasis on peace as the main method of developing social cohesion and as a cure to all fundamental human problems. Therefore, Lao Tzu's ideas about peace and his methods of solving the problems of the Warring States period are significant and from the main focus of the thesis
