[[alternative]]Stories, Memories, and Identity－－A Cultural Study of Chia-Yi He-Ping Judo Dojo
No full text[[abstract]]Established in 1961, He-Ping Judo Dojo in Chia-Yi has been a place where outstanding Judo players practice and stay. It has also consecutively achieved seven years championship of the Taiwan Provincial Athletic Games. However, following the death of Mr. Chen Wu-in, who has run He-Ping Judo Dojo for thirty years, the Dojo has stumbled into its low tide. In recent years, pupils of He-Ping have endeavored to search for another place in Chia-Yi to relocate the training hall and to continue its Judo training and popularizing works. As a result, He-Ping Judo Dojo has gradually retained its prosperity.
Basic Judo trainings have always been difficult. However, keen in reviving the honor and achievements of He-Ping Judo Dojo, the pupils willingly undertook the mission of the trainings. This revealed that, in He-Ping Judo Dojo, ‘training’ is not merely a physical matter, but rather, it represents an embodiment of He-Ping’s past dreams and ideals.
There were ‘stories’ filling the spaces of He-Ping Judo Dojo. Some stories belonged to the space itself, and the others were told and spread by people. Nowadays, these stories are also a collective memory of the pupils. The collective memory of the pupils became a platform for identifying themselves and each others. By this, an ‘imagined community’ was formed in spite of the death of Mr. Chen and the disuse of the previous training hall. Collective memories enhance cohesion within the members of He-Ping Judo Dojo. Therefore, members bear in mind the task of preserving He-Ping’s tradition, and the great mission of the revival of its highest peak.
This essay adopted the method of interview to sort out the formation and operation of the culture of He-Ping Judo Dojo in its early days. It also applied the method of ethnography to examine how, after Mr. Chen has passed away, the members of He-Ping ‘recollect the past’ and form a shared memory by eulogizing the stories of the Dojo. Furthermore, the researcher scrutinizes how the ‘identity’, engendered by the collective memory, brings the members together and, at the same time, creates/represents the tradition of He-Ping Judo Dojo in the regenerated training hall. Rituals and ongoing storytelling in He-Ping Judo Dojo connect its new members with past memories. This allows the imagined community of He-Ping to last and exist as they wish.

Get PDF© 2021 Optical Society of America.We reveal that non-Hermitian lossy couplings in an inter-cavity light transfer process are crucial for an optimum light transfer, unlike the prevailed belief. Our results turn out the fact that the light transfer can have multiple maxima following the increased inter-cavity distance. To validate this finding both in the weak and strong coupling regimes, we demonstrate our claim in the vicinity of the so-called exceptional point. We believe our results can contribute to realizing coupled-optical-cavity-based devices which is functional with an ultra-efficient light transfer, especially when the device scale is as small as the operation wavelength.11Nsciescopu

Abstract
China’s people-centered ideology was born in the West Chou Dynasty and continuously passed down to the Ching Dynasty. Although its importance waxed and waned through different times, it never completely faded away. Therefore, it can be referred to as the mainstream of China’s political ideology. Huang Tsung-Hsi（Li Chou 1610-1695）viewed himself as a loyal official from the previous dynasty, reviewing and harshly criticizing the ill policies as well as the authoritarian political system of the Ming Dynasty. He wrote “Min Yi Tai Fang Lu” to promote people-centered ideology and expound principles thereof. Huang Tsung-Hsi is the greatest scholar of people-centered ideology in Chinese history.
Living in the dramatic era at the turn of the Ming and Ching Dynasties, why did Huang relentlessly promote people-centered ideology? How were the ideological contents and implementation strategies being passed down? What were the initiatives? Were there restrictions and weaknesses? What were the values and effects? In order to discuss the above issues, this research, divided into six chapters and 25 sections, adopts the internal (external) research methods, literature review analyses, comparative method, induction method and synthetically method.
The first chapter is the introduction that describes the research motive, research method, scope of research and literature reviews. Chapter Two is devoted to Huang’s ideological background and writings, expounding the time and space factors in the formation of his people-centered ideology and political writings. Chapter Three is the ideological contents of Huang’s people-centered ideology, explaining the concept that people are the masters of the country while the emperor is only a guest, separation of powers between the emperor and officials, rule of law taking precedence over persons in power, universal education and all people being secured and wealthy. Chapter Four discusses the implementation strategies of Huang’s people-centered ideology, expounding his policy initiatives and education, bureaucratic, fiscal and defense policies that were aimed at implementing people-centered philosophy. Chapter Five focuses on the general comments on Huang’s people-centered ideology, explaining its characteristics as well as impacts on the later generations and evaluating its values and weaknesses. Chapter Six concludes the entire research which states that Huang’s people-centered ideology expounded the concepts of people first and the world owned by all people. His ideology became the foundation of the concept of ruled by people and initiated democratic ideas. Nevertheless, how to utilize the strengths of people-centered spirits and have them link and supplement to the modern democratic politics is an important subject which warrants further researches.
Methylglyoxal induces cell death through endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated ROS production and mitochondrial dysfunction
No full textDiabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are two important leading causes of acquired blindness in developed countries. As accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells plays an important role in both DR and AMD, and the methylglyoxal (MGO) within the AGEs exerts irreversible effects on protein structure and function, it is crucial to understand the underlying mechanism of MGO-induced RPE cell death. Using ARPE-19 as the cell model, this study revealed that MGO induces RPE cell death through a caspase-independent manner, which relying on reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) loss, intracellular calcium elevation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. Suppression of ROS generation can reverse the MGO-induced ROS production, MMP loss, intracellular calcium increase and cell death. Moreover, store-operated calcium channel inhibitors MRS1845 and YM-58483, but not the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor inhibitor xestospongin C, can block MGO-induced ROS production, MMP loss and sustained intracellular calcium increase in ARPE-19 cells. Lastly, inhibition of ER stress by salubrinal and 4-PBA can reduce the MGO-induced intracellular events and cell death. Therefore, our data indicate that MGO can decrease RPE cell viability, resulting from the ER stress-dependent intracellular ROS production, MMP loss and increased intracellular calcium increase. As MGO is one of the components of drusen in AMD and is the AGEs adduct in DR, this study could provide a valuable insight into the molecular pathogenesis and therapeutic intervention of AMD and DR
Impact of non-Hermitian mode interaction on inter-cavity light transfer

In the present study, we demonstrate that only the non-Hermitian coupling can correctly account for the light transfer between two coupled optical cavities. We also reveal that the non-Hermitian coupling effect becomes crucial as the system dimension decreases.
