    WAN-in-Lab: motivation, deployment and experiments

    WAN-in-Lab is a hardware testbed for the design, development, testing and evaluation of high speed network protocols. It uses real carrier-class networking hardware to avoid the artifacts introduced by network simulation and emulation, while being localized to allow detailed measurement of network performance. WAN-in-Lab is an open resource, available for use by the networking community. This paper describes the structure of WAN-in-Lab and the rationale behind it, issues encountered, and experimental results that illustrate its applications

    Revisiting the Mitra-Wan Tree Farm.

    The tree-farm model of T. Mitra and H. Wan (1985) contains novelties: a continuum of optimal cycles appear for small discounting and the cyclicality survives perturbations. To isolate the source of novelties, the author studies the simplest case: trees live naturally for two periods. This model specializes the general theory of multisector development under four conditions. It becomes a Ramsey type model, augmented by a cross-vintage constraint: the present acreage under trees, age n, must not be less than the acreage under trees age n + 1, one period hence. Novelties emerge when this constraint bounds the graph of the state-to-control correspondence. We aimed to validate the anti-OP effect of MZGW and explore its underlying mechanism.Methods: An ovariectomy (OVX) rat model in vivo and a RANKL-induced osteoclasts (OCs) model in vitro were established. Key active ingredients in MZGW high dose (MZGW-H) group were detected by UPLC-MS/MS. Micro-CT scans and histomorphology analysis were performed in OVX rats. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to investigate the relationship between the anti-OP effect of MZGW-H and intestinal flora. CCK-8 assay was applied to examine the optimal concentration of Modified Zuo Gui Wan drug serum (MZGW-DS) on osteoclasts. The qRT-PCR and Western blotting were utilized to explore the potential anti-OP pathway of MZGW, namely the SCFA-GPR41-p38MAPK signaling pathway. GPR41 was knocked down to further reverse to verify whether the pathway was the key pathway for MZGW-DS to exert its inhibitory effect on osteoclasts.Results: The three main blood components, Ferulic acid, L-Ascorbic acid and Riboflavin, were examined mainly by UPLC-MS/MS. 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that MZGW-H changed the metabolism of SCFAs. In vivo studies verified that MZGW-H ameliorated microstructure damage, improved histological changes and reduced TRAP, BALP, and BGP in OVX rats by regulating the SCFA-GPR41-p38MAPK signaling pathway. CCK-8 revealed that 5% MZGW-DS group was the most optimal concentration of MZGW-DS to inhibit osteoclast differentiation. In vitro, MZGW-DS was better than peripheral blood concentration of SCFAs in inhibiting osteoclasts. After the knockout of GPR41, MZGW-DS could not inhibit the expression of osteoclast-related protein (CTSK and NFATc1) via SCFA-GPR41-p38MAPK signaling pathway.Conclusion: MZGW-H effectively ameliorates OVX-induced osteoporosis partially achieved by increasing SCFAs metabolism and modulating the SCFA-GPR41-p38MAPK signaling pathway.     Catalytic combustion of methane with ozone using Pd-exchanged zeolite X: Experimental investigation and kinetics model

    The authors experimentally investigated the catalytic combustion of methane on a 3-wt%-Pd-ion-exchanged zeolite 13X catalyst under various reaction temperatures, ozone/methane concentration ratios, and gas hourly space velocities. A model based on Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics was developed to analyze the performance of the system. Without the catalyst, the activation energy for methane oxidation with ozone is 148 kJ/mol. Adding catalysts but using oxygen only as oxidant, the activation energy reduces to 114 kJ/mol. Adding ozone to the system greatly reduces the activation energy to 63 kJ/mol. The enhanced methane conversion by adding ozone with catalysts could be attributed to the decomposition of ozone to atomic oxygen species. With the catalyst, at temperatures below 400°C, methane conversion is mainly achieved by reaction with ozone. Adding ozone at this low temperature range can enhance the energy efficiency of methane conversion.     Adopting open-source SD-WAN: a comprehensive analysis of performance, cost, and security benefits over traditional WAN architectures

    Many enterprises are using cloud computing innovation and remote services to the maximum. Working from home is becoming the norm. Favored legacy Wide Area Networks (WANs) are not up to the tasks, as they are suffering due to lack of scalability with their traditional non-virtualized form as it still requires a lot of physical components. Update and maintenance of fickle hardware costs a lot. There is a need for more flexible and scalable networking solutions. Many enterprise solutions offer proprietary form of SD-WANs (Software-Defined Wide Area Networks), but they are costly and inflexible, which means they are not practical for all applications. This paper proposes an Open-source SD-WAN with OpenDaylight platform as core that we have tested in a simulated environment along with Mininet and Oracle Virtual Box to study various scenarios. Test results show that it provides a 35% increase in throughput, decreases 40% in latency, and reduces packet loss by 50%, compared to traditional WANs. Additionally with Open-Source nature, it has a 20% lower operational coupled with the problem mitigation factors listed above, which makes it a more potential solution for the current woes of businesses

    Self-triggered finite-time H∞ control for Markov jump systems with multiple frequency ranges performance

    In the present study, a self-triggered finite-time control policy is investigated for Markov jump systems (MJSs) under multiple frequency ranges restrictions. A self-triggered scheme is developed to realize the system in a resource-aware pattern which will fully analyze the effect of transition probability on the characteristics of the finite frequency range. The developed scheme updates the control input of the system through the history of measurements. Then, taking into account several factors such as transient performance, frequency domain specification, and computational burden, a self-triggered finite-time controller is constructed. The developed controller concurrently ensures the predefined disturbance suppression level and the finite-time boundedness of the considered system while decreasing the computational and communication cost. The simulation example of a cart-spring system illustrates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach over existing methods

    A Perfect Hirsch-type Index? Experiences Using the Tapered h-Index (hT)

    : The hT -index proposed by Anderson et al. includes all citations, yet scoring them in a way that is comparable with the h-index. This new index is superior to the h-index proposed by Hirsch because: 1) it takes all citations into account; 2) it has no problems with special cases, such as situations with only a few highly cited papers; or the case that, because of a lack of publications the h-index is set artificially equal to the number of publications; 3) it has a higher resolution than the h-index. In order to illustrate our point the hT – indices of more than 6,000 Chinese academic journals have been calculated and results are discussed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
