Tacit knowledge, learning and expertise in dry stone walling

    No full text
This is a detailed study of learning in the context of dry stone walling. It examines what happens in the learning situation. The aim of this work was: 'To understand the nature of expertise in dry stone walling, how it is understood by those practising the craft, and how it is transmitted to others'. The main research questions were, therefore: What happens when dry stone wallers are learning their craft? How do they acquire expertise in dry stone walling? How is this learning communicated? This process necessitated developing a way of engaging with the practitioners, eliciting descriptive data about what they were doing, and why they were doing it, through interviews (or conversations) with both individuals and groups, whilst they practiced their skill. Twenty three wailers were interviewed as they worked, building walls. The material obtained was analysed under seven different themes: 'Knowing how' The use of tacit knowledge or intuition 'Flow' Constant decision making, reflection and learning from mistakes Individual and subjective variations and experiences The relevance of emotion The use of 'rules of thumb' or maxims. Learning walling does not fit simply into any of the seven themes. It is contextualised, complex and individual. It demonstrates tacit knowledge and intuition. It involves emotion, sometimes consciously, sometimes not. It involves memory, problem solving, and learning from mistakes, and reflection. Maxims or 'rules of thumb' were a key element in the learning process at all stages. Linear stages of learning were not evidenced. Deep understanding of the practice is evidenced, and the wider learning and teaching implications are explored

The long-wavelength view of GG Tau A: rocks in the ring world

    No full text
We present the first detection of GG Tau A at centimetre wavelengths, made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array at a frequency of 16 GHz (λ = 1.8 cm). The source is detected at >6 σrms with an integrated flux density of S16GHz = 249 ± 45 µJy. We use these new centimetre-wave data, in conjunction with additional measurements compiled from the literature, to investigate the long-wavelength tail of the dust emission from this unusual protoplanetary system. We use an MCMC-based method to determine maximum likelihood parameters for a simple parametric spectral model and consider the opacity and mass of the dust contributing to the microwave emission. We derive a dust mass of Md ~ 0.1 Msun, constrain the dimensions of the emitting region and find that the opacity index at λ > 7 mm is less than unity, implying a contribution to the dust population from grains exceeding ~4 cm in size. We suggest that this indicates coagulation within the GG Tau A system has proceeded to the point where dust grains have grown to the size of small rocks with dimensions of a few centimetres. Considering the relatively young age of the GG Tau association in combination with the low derived disc mass, we suggest that this system may provide a useful test case for rapid core accretion planet formation models

Topological transient models of three-phase, three-legged transformer

The paper further develops a modeling concept of three-phase, three-legged transformer with tank walls represented as a distributed parameter structure. The circuital models proposed replicate accurately all possible zero-sequence impedances and losses of a three-winding transformer. Several model versions are compared to each other and to a conventional topological model with respect to their transient behavior during inrush and short circuit events, and in the presence of geomagnetically induced current (GIC). It was found that in all the cases considered, except that with a large GIC, all the models yield similar results. The reliability of the models is due to the representation of the tank walls behavior in a physical way, allowing one to observe the field distribution over the wall thickness as a function of transformer excitation. The modeled results are in a close agreement with positive and zero sequence data measured on a 25 MVA transformer as well as with inrush current test on a 300 kVA unit

Expelled Spanish jesuits have been regarded by current Historiography as "cultural mediators": during their long exile in Italy (1767-1815), they developed a "Spanish Italian culture" (according to M. Batllori's definition) thanks to a meaningful syncretic approach. The author offers some brief reflections on those expelled jesuits who decided to porsue a litterary career, with a specific focus on Juan Andrés and Esteban Arteaga. Through several spanish fathers achieved a good literary success, the majority of them suffered the typical failures, delusions and troubles experienced by eighteenth century men of letters, especially those who belonged to a sector of the Republic of Letters called by Robert Darnton "Grub Street"

In this paper I present the most important results of my research studying the solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations of the type. In this study, we focus on nonlinear partial differential equations of the form ∆u + λf(u) = 0 in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω, where λ ∈ R, Ω is a smooth bounded domain in RN, ∆ = Σ ∂²/∂x²ᵢ is the Laplacian operator, and f : R → R is a nonlinear function. Our theorems were obtained using bifurcation theory, variational methods, and a minmax principle developed by the author in collaboration with A. Castro and J. M. Neuberger ([Cas-Cos-Nu1], 1997). We also present some theorems related to algorithms for approximating solutions to nonlinear problems of type (1), along with a set of open questions
