worker born at the beginning of the twentieth century, who by various chance encounters
becomes involved in the family of Boris Aleksandrovic Ivanov, a party official, one of the new soviet ruling class. The setting is Leningrad, and the year is 1934

No full textReaction of TiCl4 or ZrI4 with the soft, neutral o-C6H4(CH2EMe)2 (E = S or Se) in anhydrous CH2Cl2 (or toluene) yields the distorted octahedral chelate complexes [MX4{o-C6H4(CH2EMe)2}]. Using Et2Se gives [MX4(Et2Se)2] (M = Zr, X = Cl or I; M = Hf, X = I). The Sn(IV) analogues, [SnCl4{o-C6H4(CH2EMe)2}] and [SnCl4(Et2Se)2] were obtained similarly. These complexes have been characterised spectroscopically and analytically, and crystal structures of trans-[SnCl4(Et2Se)2] and some selenonium salts derived as minor by-products from the parent Group 4 complexes are described. The neutral chalcogenoether complexes have been evaluated as single source precursors to ME2/ME thin films via LPCVD. [TiCl4{o-C6H4(CH2EMe)2}] leads to the deposition of air and moisture stable TiE2 films (with no residual Cl). Coverage of the substrate is uniform with platelet growth perpendicular to the surface. The heavier Zr(IV) species do not lead to significant ZrE2 deposition. On the other hand, LPCVD of [SnCl4{o-C6H4(CH2SMe)2}] leads to deposition of SnS2 at lower temperatures and SnS at higher temperatures, while [SnCl4{o-C6H4(CH2SeMe)2}] gives rather uneven coatings of SnSe2. The Et2Se derivative, [SnCl4(Et2Se)2] leads to uniform deposition of SnSe2 with growth perpendicular to the substrate surface. The SnE2/SnE films are stable indefinitely to air and moisture. The generation of TiS2, SnS2 and SnS in this way are very rare examples of metal sulfide deposition from C–S bond fission within a thioether complex

No full textThe series of Conversational Partnerships began in 2017 in African Arts vol. 50, no. 2, with a conversation between two artists: Eria Nsubuga SANE from Uganda and Sikhumbuzo Makandula from South Africa. The format of a “conversational partnership” (Rubin and Rubin 2012: 7) emphasizes the cocreation of meaning by the interviewer and interviewee as coauthors. This enables a move away from the art history format of the interviewer (usually a writer) assuming the role of the sole author and the interviewee (often an artist) having no status as an author despite the fact that her or his practice-led creation of knowledge is foundational to the content of the interview. Stacey Gillian Abe and Immy Mali participated in a joint artists' residency as part of the RAW program at Rhodes University in South Africa from November to December 2017. During this time, they engaged with each other's practice-led work, and they created this conversational partnership at a writing breakaway in the Eastern Cape

No full textConstructing Adolescence in Fantastic Realism examines those fundamental themes which inform our understanding of "the teenager"—themes that emerge in both literary and cultural contexts. Models of adolescence do not arise solely from discourses of psychology, sociology, and education. Rather, these models—frameworks including developmentalism, identity formation, social agency, and subjectivity in cultural space—can also be found represented symbolically in fantastic tropes such as metamorphosis, time-slip, hauntings, doppelgangers, invisibility, magic gifts, and witchcraft. These are the incredible, supernatural, and magical elements that invade the everyday and diurnal world of fantastic realism. In this original study, Alison Waller proposes a new critical term to categorize a popular and established genre in literature for teenagers: young adult fantastic realism. Though fantastic realism plays a crucial part in the short history of young adult literature, up until now this genre has typically been overlooked or subsumed into the wider class of fantasy. Touching on well-known authors including Robert Cormier, Melvin Burgess, Gillian Cross, Margaret Mahy, K.M. Peyton and Robert Westall, as well as previously unexamined writers, Waller explores the themes and ideological perspectives embedded in fantastic realist novels in order to ask whether parallel realities and fantastic identities produce forms of adolescence that are dynamic and subversive. One of the first studies to deal with late twentieth-century fantastic literature for young adults, this book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of adult attitudes toward adolescent identity

Get PDFThis diploma paper explores three dramatic texts by Gillian Plowman - Me and My Friend (1990), The Window Cleaner (2006) and The Ox and the Ass. Its main topic is the study of characters featuring in the works and their linguistic and stylistic expression as shown at the levels of register, colloquialisms and slang. In the first part, the history and basic features of the one act play are discussed. In the second part, linguistic and stylistic features of the plays are examined, paying special attention to the differences and similarities between characters and plays. The examination provides a framework for the comparison which is summarized in the concluding part of the paper. The author\u27s main concern is to establish main differences and similarities between stylistic makeup of individual plays and characters and to find out to what extent the playwright has succeeded in adapting seemingly simple plot for the more demanding audiences of the 21 century.Diplomsko delo razčlenjuje tri dramska besedila Gillian Plowman - Me and My Friend (1990), The Window Cleaner (2006) in The Ox and the Ass. Prvi del diplomskega dela obsega zgodovino enodejanke in njene bistvene značilnosti. Drugi del raziskuje jezikovne in slogovne značilnosti značajev in posameznih iger ter ugotavlja podobnosti in razlike med njimi, ki jih nato povzema v zaključnem delu. Avtorico zanima, v koliki meri je pisateljici uspelo prilagoditi navidezno preprost zaplet zahtevnejšim potrebam publike 21. stoletja
