O propósito foi chegar a uma interpretação do sentido da frase. Uma investigação detalhada foi feita do conteúdo de Art and Scholasticism, posteriormente contrastada com os resultados de uma pesquisa feita em seus ensaios e suas cartas, o que revelou numerosos ecos de diversos trechos constando no texto de Maritain. Três pontos principais foram escolhidos como critérios na análise do hábito artístico de O'Connor: 1) a prática de arte implica uma luta; 2) a arte somente pode ser percebida pelos sentidos; e 3) a prática de arte exige do artista a dedicação indivisa à obra nascente.     The association between resilience and survival among Chinese elderly

    Based on the unique longitudinal data of the elderly aged 65+ with a sufficiently large sub-sample of the oldest-old aged 85+ from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, we construct a resilience scale with 7 indicators for the Chinese elderly, based on the framework of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Cox proportional hazards regression model estimates show that, after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics and initial health status, the total resilience score and most factors of the resilience scale are significantly associated with reduced mortality risk among the young-old and oldest-old. Although the causal mechanisms remain to be investigated, effective measures to promote resilience are likely to have a positive effect on longevity of the elderly in China.China, healthy life expectancy, mortality risk, residence, survival

    The modernity of nations. A tribute to Walker Connor

    To fully appreciate Walker Connor's contribution to the foundation of the contemporary study of nationalism, two main factors must be taken into account. First, the context of positivist behavioural political science within which in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, he articulated his critique of the concept of nation-building. In this context, Connor emerged as a critic of the limitations and the naivité of positivist modernization theory. His dissenting voice called for critical rethinking and revision of the central concepts of the theory of political development, some of which enjoyed almost doctrinal status. Second, despite his criticism of modernization theory, Connor retained a strong conviction that nations and national sentiment were the products of modernity; indeed, in his judgement, they formed the primary content of modernity. This too was a critical stance within the rising tide of nationalism studies since 1989–1990, when ideology and wishful thinking influenced to a considerable extent the interpretation of nationalism. Walker Connor's intellectual legacy should thus be understood as a heritage of critical thought that is informed by a noteworthy awareness of the moral responsibilities of scholarly analysis. © The author(s) 2018.     Novel chemical applications of a diverse bacterial culture collection

    Culture collections play a pivotal role in the preservation of microbial life. Through various collections, validly published bacterial species are accessible and provide a vast and continuously developing resource for investigation. The National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria (NCIMB) is the largest bacterial culture collection in Scotland; however, the collection remains mostly unexplored – presenting a large untapped resource with intriguing industrial potential. Microbial technologies are paramount for reducing, mitigating and addressing the effects of the climate crisis yet developments are often precluded by the limited scope and lack of knowledge of various processes. Nowhere is this more relevant than in the chemical industry, a field that must rapidly adopt sustainable processes to meet ambitious climate targets by 2050. The untapped chemical potential of culture collections presents an intriguing opportunity to expand the biocatalytic toolkit and further development of sustainable bioprocesses within Green Chemistry. Here, a small panel of 73 phylogenetically diverse bacteria representative of the NCIMB culture collection was curated to enable the discovery and development of novel bioprocesses. By exposing the curation to small molecules, phenotypic screening enabled the identification of P=S bond formation in various species. This unpredicted finding led to the elucidation and characterisation of previously unanticipated biochemistry in Escherichia coli BW25113; providing proof of principle for the novelty held by culture collections and what can be learned from it. The utility of an in-house curation to provide resources for building upon existing biotechnologies was also demonstrated by exploring the H₂-production potential of the entire curation. This ultimately led to the establishment of Rhodospirillum rubrum S1 as a robust, high purity H₂ production platform by recapitulating historic work. Subsequent work built upon the system further, interfacing R. rubrum bio-H₂ with a heterogenous palladium catalyst to facilitate hydrogenation reactions under ambient culturing conditions in a one- or two-pot reaction. This provided a significant advance in the tools available for biocompatible chemistry and demonstrated the first known phototrophic biocompatible process. Furthermore, by considering the metabolisms of other bacteria in the curation, waste milk fermented by Ligolactobacillus equi could be used as a feedstock for bio- H₂ production by R. rubrum and to successfully enable biocompatible hydrogenation of a model compound. Although yields were lower and require significant optimisation, the result elegantly demonstrates how a curation can enable further stepwise advances which would be difficult to consider or achieve when using species in isolation. This principle could be expanded to use culture collections as a means of making waste streams into readily accessible feedstocks for chemical biotechnology. In all, work completed here highlights the potential of culture collections for the discovery and advancement of bioprocesses. Findings indicate that, through curation expansion, improved culturing knowledge with time, and targeted high-throughput studies, future work will likely elucidate further bioprocesses. In time, such discoveries will help expand the biocatalysis toolkit, enable less polluting syntheses, and provide a path to a more sustainable chemical industry
