    Anne M. (Sinay) Walko was born on May 30, 1913, in Toledo. She was a court reporter in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for 22 years, retiring in 1975. She was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies' Association. She was the widow of Andrew J. Walko. In her interview, Mrs. Walko talks about childhood experiences and the home she grew up in. She died on July 6, 1999 in Toledo at the age of 86

    Magyarországot a Nagy háború után a trianoni békediktátum szabdalta szét. Nemcsak fontos gazdasági területektől esett el az ország, hanem néhány tollvonással családokat is szétszakítottak. A megtépázott ország helyreállításában hatalmas szerepe volt Bethlen István kormányának, amely segítségével 1926-ig helyreállították az ország gazdasági, pénzügyi helyzetét. A két terminusú kormány egyik oszlopos tagja volt Walko Lajos, aki nagyban hozzájárult a gazdasági rehabilitáció lebonyolításához. Az ő segítségének is köszönhető, hogy a katonai és népszövetségi ellenőrzéstől mentes ország elkezdhette revíziós terve véghezvitelét. Szakdolgozatomban Walko Lajos életét kívánom felvázolni, illetve az 1927-es genfi konferencián való részvételét bemutatni, továbbá áttekintést adni az olasz-magyar barátsági szerződés előkészületeiből, melytől Walko Lajos távolmaradt.TörténelemMSc/M

    Synthesis and Properties of Dipyridylcyclopentenes

    A short and general route to the substituted dipyridylcyclopentenes was explored and several new compounds belonging to this new group of diarylethenes were synthesized. The study of their photochromic and thermochromic properties shows that the rate of the thermal ring opening is strongly dependent on the polarity of the solvent.

Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Tampa, FL, USA Abstract: Advancements in molecular and genetic techniques have significantly furthered our biological understanding of Ewing sarcoma (ES). ES is typified by a driving TET–ETS fusion with an otherwise relatively quiet genome. Detection of one of several characteristic fusions, most commonly EWSR1–FLI1, is the gold standard for diagnosis. We discuss the current role of precision medicine in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of ES. Continued efforts toward molecularly guided approaches are actively being pursued in ES to better refine prognosis, identify germline markers of disease susceptibility, influence therapeutic selection, effectively monitor disease activity in real time, and identify genetic and immunotherapeutic targets for therapeutic development.     Stabilization of the dystroglycan complex in Cajal bands of myelinating Schwann cells through plectin-mediated anchorage to vimentin filaments

    Previous studies have unmasked plectin, a uniquely versatile intermediate filament-associated cytolinker protein, to be essential for skin and skeletal muscle integrity. Different sets of isoforms of the protein were found to stabilize cells mechanically, regulate cytoskeletal dynamics, and serve as a scaffolding platform for signaling molecules. Here, we investigated whether a similar scenario prevails in myelinating Schwann cells. Using isoform-specific antibodies, the two plectin variants predominantly expressed in the cytoplasmic compartment (Cajal bands) of Schwann cells were identified as plectin (P)1 and P1c. Coimmunoprecipitation and immunolocalization experiments revealed complex formation of Cajal band plectin with -dystroglycan, the core component of the dystrophin glycoprotein complex that in Schwann cells is crucial for the compartmentalization and stabilization of the myelin sheath. To study the functional implications of Schwann cell-specific plectin--dystroglycan interaction, we generated conditional (Schwann cell-restricted) plectin knockout mice. Ablation of plectin in myelinating Schwann cells (SCs) was found not to affect myelin sheath formation but to abrogate the tight association of the dystroglycan complex with the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. We show that the disruption of this association leads to the destabilization of the dystroglycan complex combined with increased myelin sheath deformations observed in the peripheral nerve during ageing of the animal.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Land-atmosphere interactions in Southwest Western Australia

    The Southwest of Western Australia (SWWA) is a region of extensive land cover change with an estimated 13 million hectares of native vegetation cleared since European settlement. Whilst previous studies have suggested meteorological and climatological implications of this change in land use, no studies have explicitly focussed on the detailed mechanisms behind the impacts of land-cover change on individual meteorological phenomena. This thesis seeks to identify the physical mechanisms inducing changes within the atmosphere by using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS V6.0) to simulate the impact of land use change on meteorological phenomena at different scales and evaluate these model results against high resolution atmospheric soundings, station observations, and gridded rainfall analyses where appropriate. Sensitivity tests show that land-cover change results in an increase in low-level atmospheric moisture advection associated with the southern sea-breeze due to a reduction in surface roughness. It also results in a decrease in convective precipitation associated with cold-fronts and convective clouds associated with the surface heat trough, due to an increase in wind speed, and a decrease in turbulent kinetic energy and vertically integrated moisture convergence within the PBL. Large-eddy simulations further highlight the role of land-cover change and soil moisture, as well as the contributions of surface versus entrainment fluxes on the growth of the PBL and development of convective clouds. These results are discussed within the broader context of the meteorology of the region
