Letters from George Washington Walker, Hobart, Tasmania to Abraham Charles Flower
Four letters written by George Washington Walker, Hobart, Tasmania to Abraham Charles Flower dated between 1847 and 1850. Abraham Charles Flower (alias Richard Edwards) was transported as a convict to Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour , Tasmania in 1830. He was one of three convicts converted to Quakerism by Backhouse and Walker. One convict, Henry Propsting, joined the Friends in 1836 and took a prominent part in Quaker activities, another went to Sydney as an assigned servant to James Backhouse, and the third, Flower, after a chequered career was last heard of near Castlemaine in Victoria. Abraham Lincoln check to William Johnson
Dated January 7, 1861, this is a check written by President-elect Abraham Lincoln for $20 for the Springfield Marine and Fire Insurance Company to William Johnson, an African American servant and barber who served as Lincoln's personal valet and whom Lincoln took with him to Washington, DC. An accompanying note indicates that Lincoln then had to find another job for Johnson, who at the time would have been the only African American servant in the White House
'Abraham Lincoln' handwritten article by Cyrus Walker for the Grand Prairie Grange
Cyrus Walker was the oldest son of the early Oregon Territory missionaries Elkanah and Mary Richardson Walker. He grew up at Tshimakain in the 1830s-40s, where he learned the native Spokane language. After joining the U.S. army during the Civil War and then attempting to make a living as a farmer, he became a teacher at the Warm Springs Indian Agency. These letters, documents and clippings shed light on his experiences as a missionary, a soldier, a pioneer and a teacher at Warm Springs. This collection was donated to Pacific University by Betty Thorne, a descendant of the Walkers
