Corporate Boards and Ownership Structure as Antecedents of Corporate Governance Disclosure in Saudi Arabian Publicly Listed Corporations
We investigate whether and to what extent publicly listed corporations voluntarily comply with and disclose recommended good corporate governance (CG) practices, and distinctively examine whether the observed cross-sectional differences in such CG disclosures can be explained by ownership and board mechanisms with specific focus on Saudi Arabia. Our results suggest that corporations with larger boards, a big-four auditor, higher government ownership, a CG committee and higher institutional ownership disclose considerably more than those that are not. By contrast, we find that an increase in block ownership significantly reduces CG disclosure. Our results are generally robust to a number of econometric models that control for different types of disclosure indices, firm-specific characteristics and firm-level fixed-effects. Our results have important implications for policy-makers, practitioners and regulatory authorities, especially those in developing countries across the globe

Quality of Life Is Associated with Survival in Patients with Cirrhosis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma
The general metadata -- e.g., title, author, abstract, subject headings, etc. -- is publicly available, but access to the submitted files is restricted to UT Southwestern campus access and/or authorized UT Southwestern users.Pages 1-24 are misnumbered as pages 2-25.BACKGROUND: Prior studies assessing quality of life (QOL) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily included patients with preserved liver function and/or early HCC, leading to overestimation of QOL.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize QOL among a diverse cohort of cirrhotic patients with HCC and evaluate its association with survival.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study among cirrhotic patients with HCC from a large urban safety-net hospital between April 2011 and September 2013. Patients completed two self-administered surveys, the EORTC QLQ-C30, and QLQ-HCC18, prior to HCC-directed treatment. We used generalized linear models to identify correlates of QOL. Survival curves were generated using Kaplan-Meier analysis and compared using log rank test to determine if QOL is associated with survival.
RESULTS: 130 treatment-naïve patients were enrolled and completed both surveys. Patients reported fair global QOL (median score 50%), high cognitive and social function (median scores 67%), but poor role function (median score 50%). QOL was associated with both cirrhosis-related (p=0.02) and tumor-related (p=0.02) components of Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage. QOL was associated with survival on univariate analysis (HR 0.37, 95%CI 0.16-0.85) but became non-significant (HR 0.82, 95%CI 0.37-1.80) after adjusting for BCLC stage and treatment. Role functioning was significantly associated with survival (HR 0.40, 95%CI 0.20-0.81), after adjusting for Caucasian race (HR 0.31, 95%CI 0.16-0.59), BCLC stage (HR 1.51, 95%CI 0.21-1.89), and treatment (HR 0.57, 95%CI 0.33-0.97).
CONCLUSION: QOL and role function have prognostic significance and are important to assess in cirrhotic patients with HCC
The exegesis of Tabatabaei and the Hermeneutics of Hirsch: a comparative study
This thesis is a comparative study between Hermeneutics on the one hand and exegesis of the Holy Qur'an on the other. Its objective is to discover whether there are salient points of convergence between the two disciples, and whether issues germane to the Hermeneutical tradition in the West have been referred to and/or employed in Muslim works of Qur'an commentary. To this end, the works of one of the most prominent Shi'ite philosophers and exegetes. Allama Mohammad Hossein Tabataei, have been analysed and compared with the perspective and methodology of E D. Hirsch, one of the most important hermeneuticians in the Western World. Hirsch has been chosen since, in the opinion of the author, there is a considerable number of commonalities between the Hirschian approach to hermeneutics and the exegetical methodology of Tabatabaei and other Shi'ite Muslim interpreters of the Qur'an.. Hirsch, as an objectivist, along with a number of other Hermeneutical scholars, are critical of those who subscribe to philosophical Hermeneutics, such as Heideger and Gadimer. The same approach is taken in Tabatabaei's works, thus providing a strong rationale for an academic comparison of these two scholars. For this reason, this thesis attempts to study the theories of Tabatabaei and Hirsch in order to highlight the similarities and differences in their works. The central hypothesis is that while small differences in approach exist, there is much common ground, and that it is possible to use certain facets of Hirschian hermeneutics in the interpretation of the Qur'an, thus modernising some of the existing exegetical approaches employed by Shi'ite scholars.Since the aim of this thesis is to compare the interpretive works of Tabatabaei with those of Hirsch's, an introductory chapter has been dedicated to the study of the evolution of Shi'ite exegesis from the beginning to date. Tabatabaei's Al-Mizan has been chosen as the foremost work of Shi'ite exegesis in the modem period. Furthermore, a complete chapter has also been dedicated to Tabatabai's exegetical modus operandi as reflected in Al-Mizan, in order to arrive at a better understanding of his perspectives. This research arrives at the conclusion that philosophical Hermeneutics and Epistemology have opened new horizons on which we will always be dependent. Whatever interpretive theories with regards to the understanding of the text are accepted, or whatever the tendency as far as literary criticism is concerned, or whatever ideas are accepted in the arena of philosophy of human and social sciences, the discussion of the nature of understanding in general cannot be avoided. This does not mean that Hermeneutics is limited to these new theories. Rather, the opportunity always exists to introduce new interpretive theories in connection with the understanding of the text. It is indeed possible to study these discussions in detail in a separate sphere independent of the other branches of Islamic sciences and arrive at a number of stable principles in the interpretation of the text in Islamic research
Analysis of privacy protections in fitness tracking applications
Mobile fitness tracking apps allow users to track their workouts and share them with friends through online social networks. Although the sharing of personal data is an inherent risk in all social networks, the dangers presented by sharing personal workouts comprised of geospatial and health data may prove especially grave. While fitness apps offer a variety of privacy features, at present it is unclear if these countermeasures are sufficient to thwart a determined attacker, nor is it clear how many of their users are at risk.
In this work, we perform a systematic analysis of privacy behaviors and threats in fitness tracking social networks. Collecting a month-long snapshot of public posts to the popular Strava fitness tracking service (21 million posts, 3 million users), we observe that 16.5% of users make use of Endpoint Privacy Zones (EPZs), which conceal fitness activity nearby user-designated sensitive locations (e.g., home, office). We go on to develop an attack against EPZs that infers users’ protected locations from the remaining available information in public posts, discovering that 95.1% of moderately active users are at risk of having their protected locations extracted by an attacker. Finally, we consider the efficacy of state-of-the-art privacy mechanisms through adapting geo-indistinguishability techniques as well as developing a novel EPZ fuzzing technique. Strava has been notified of the discovered vulnerabilities and (at time of submission) is preparing to incorporate our countermeasures into their production system.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-05-01The student, Muhammad Hussain, accepted the attached license on 2018-04-25 at 21:03.The student, Muhammad Hussain, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-04-25 at 21:10.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-04-26 at 14:30.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12510 on 2018-08-31 at 17:21:36Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-04T20:41:58Z (GMT). Contemporary explanations for Sunan Nasaie: A study of sheikh Muhammad Ali Adam approach in his commentary Zakhirah al-’Uqba / Romzi Taleh
The purpose of this research is to study the methodology of Mohammad bin Ali Adam al-Ethiopi in his work, “Zahirah al-„Uqba fi Sharh al-Mujtaba”. This work consists of writings and lectures on Sunan al-Nasa‟i al-Sughra written by Imam al-Nasa‟i. The focus of this study is on the science of narration and analysis of texts applied in the work. This study also introduces Imam al-Nasa‟i‟s work, Sunan al-Nasa‟i, and its position among other books of hadith collections. The biography of Mohammad bin Ali Adam is also introduced based on authoritative sources of reference, besides interviews with his students and followers. This study uses an analytical approach in order to identify the methodology employed by Mohammad bin Ali Adam in his analysis of the hadiths in Sunan al-Nasa‟i, as well as criticisms directed towards him. In producing this study, the writer used the comparison method, by comparing the methods applied in Zahirah al-„Uqba and in al-Shanqiti‟s Shuruq Anwar al-Minan al-Kubra. Zahirah al-„Uqba is a contemporary study of Sunan al-Nasa‟i which is difficult to find nowadays. In order to produce this study, the author studied the hadiths with the utmost care. The uniqueness of this analysis is its thoroughness, introducing readers to the hadiths and the problems contained in Sunan al-Nasa‟i. The author was consistent with the method applied in the study. The author also referred to the study by al-Shanqiti that was written before Zahirah al‟Uqba. However, the author added a few points such as lataif al-isnad besides focusing on the differences between Sunan al-Nasa‟i and the original writing, al-Sunan al-Kubra. Results of the study show that the author focused on the academic issues contained in the writings without being influenced by the source of the various opinions. Harsh criticisms and insults towards other scholars are nowhere to be found in this work. Instead, the author shows respect to scholars who provided insight, as every student should do
Methodology of Economics: Secular Versus Islamic
This book is based on the thesis that I submitted in August 2006 to the International Islamic University Malaysia in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of the PhD degree in Economics.It was a difficult topic but this reality dawned on me only after I had already crossed the point of no return. I found the area hazy and controversial in mainstream economics. In the case of Islamic economics the situation was even worse. Methodology was invariably confused with a research design or work plan. The subject in a formal form did not even exist. Whatever was available in the literature was part of discussions on Islamic economics or Shari’ah issues. Usually, the discussion was of a ‘touch and go’ nature. The writers were seldom found coming to grips with real issues in the area let alone reaching any worthwhile conclusions. Much confusion and controversy in the methodology of economics essentially centered on the efficacy of criteria, rules, and procedures that have to be observed for evaluating the performance of economics – secular or Islamic. In fact, until today there has hardly been a common view or a clear understanding among the Islamic scholars as to whether Islamic economics itself has a separate existence independent of its mainstream counterpart let alone having a methodology to assess and oversee it. In this dark and un-chartered area, I have tried to show that Islamic economics is both epistemologically ‘linked’ to and is also ‘independent’ of secular economics. To be precise, methodology of Islamic economics is and would broadly be the application of the Shari’ah norms to mainstream dispensation with a view to assessing their compatibility with the Islamic faith and the position of the Shari’ah on the many and divergent micro and macro economic issues. We shall find in the following discussion that the subject under the name ‘Islamic economics’ is presently no more than the result of applying the Islamic rules and injunctions, i.e. Islamic fiqh, to secular economics: Islamic economics is not yet, contrary to what some scholars would want us to believe, a discipline that replaces secular economics. In Islamic educational institutions worldwide, curricula and teaching programs are dominated – even if out of necessity –by course structures and reading materials appropriate for Western social setting and values designed as they are on the assumption of an impersonal market environment. The Islamization of Knowledge program in economics follows what one may call a ‘step-by-step approach’ for developing the subject. This de facto means that there has been no attempt to replace the mainstream concepts and theories completely with the pure Islamic ones: the initial plan has been just to modify and integrate them with what Islam would allow or could modify to fall in line with the Shari’ah tenets. When the subject itself was in a state of infancy, one need not wonder if its methodology were all the more found confused and patchy. However, it is this messy state of methodology that lends reason and significance to the present work. It fills a gap, however imperfect it might look: I am aware of its limitations. The main issue relevant to our discussion in this exploration was whether reality adjusts to doctrine or that doctrine conforms to the reality or one finds a mutual interaction between the two in the field of economics. What methodological affinities or divergences, if any, are between them? Also, we attempted to see whether prediction could or should be the hallmark of a theory in social sciences as is currently believed in economics at least, or the tractability of events, their analysis, and human prescription were of greater importance. It will be satisfying if the readers could find this small work light bearing on these and related issues.methodology; philosophy of science; values; reason; Islamic; secular; theory of knowledge; revelation; faith; unity of science; economic systems; laws of nature; self-interest;
