Towards understanding the impact of the evanescent elastodynamic mode coupling in Marchenko equation-based demultiple methods

Marchenko equation-based methods promise data-driven, true-amplitude internal multiple elimination. The method is exact in 1-D acoustic media, however it needs to be expanded to account for the presence of 2- and 3-D elastodynamic wave-field phenomena, such as compressional (P) to shear (S) mode conversions, total reflections or evanescent waves. Mastering high waveform-fidelity methods such as this, could further advance amplitude vs offset analysis and lead to improved reservoir characterization. This method-expansion may comprise of re-evaluating the underlying assumptions and/or appending the scheme with additional constraints (e.g. minimum phase). To do that, one may need to better understand the construction of the Marchenko equation solutions, the so-called focusing functions, in a mathematically simple and numerically stable fashion. The latter could be a challenge at large angles of incidence where the elastodynamic effects and evanescent waves start playing a dominant role. We demonstrate that the elastodynamic focusing functions are the bridge between the Marchenko equation theory and the transfer matrix formalism. Using the latter, we show how we can try to gain further insights into how time-reversal (correlations) behaves when either of the elastic modes becomes evanescent. We also show how this construction allows us to shed light on into the mathematical properties of elastodynamic inverse transmissions, which takes us a step closer towards understanding the elastodynamic minimum phase reconstruction.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic

Active and passive monitoring of fault reactivation under stress cycling

Increased seismicity due to subsurface activities has led to increased interest in monitoring and seismic risk mitigation. In this study we combined passive and active acoustic monitoring methods to monitor fault sliding and reactivation in the laboratory. Acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic transmission measurements were performed during stress-cycling to monitor stress-driven fault reactivation. We show the use of the transmissivity and coda wave interferometry of the active acoustic measurements and the number of generated AE events for fault reactivation monitoring. Combining these two methods, we are able to detect the different phases of fault reactivation process under stress cycling including, early aseismic creep (pre-slip), fault slip, and continuous sliding. Combining both active and passive monitoring increases accuracy of monitoring and can lead to better seismic risk mitigationGreen Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic

The propagator and transfer matrix for a 3D inhomogeneous dissipative acoustic medium, expressed in Marchenko focusing functions

Standard Marchenko redatuming and imaging schemes neglect evanescent waves and are based on the assumption that decomposition into downgoing and upgoing waves is possible in the subsurface. Recently we have shown that propagator matrices, which circumvent these assumptions, can be expressed in terms of Marchenko focusing functions. In this paper we generalize the relation between the propagator matrix and the Marchenko focusing functions for a 3D inhomogeneous dissipative medium. Moreover, for the same type of medium we discuss a relation between the transfer matrix and the Marchenko focusing functions.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic

Mechanisms of Exosome-Autophagy Interplay in Host Response to the Cytoplasmic RNA Virus (Rift Valley Fever Virus) and Development of Promising Countermeasure Approaches

    No full text
Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is from the Bunyaviridae family, genus Phlebovirus, and causes Rift Valley Fever (RVF) disease for which no licensed vaccines or effective therapies are available. RVF is an important emerging zoonotic disease that poses serious threat to livestock and human life, and its causative agent, RVFV, is classified as a pathogen of highest concern (Category A) by NIAID. While RVFV is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, human cases can also be acquired through contact with blood or organs of an infected animal. RVF disease causes abortion storms in ruminants that can reach 100%, and in serious human cases it can lead to encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever, hepatic disease, ocular disease, and mortality. Case fatality rates from RVFV infection can reach as high as 30% in non-endemic regions. RVFV is an enveloped negative sense single-stranded RNA virus with a diameter between 80-120 nm, and the RVFV genome consists of three segments that are named based on their relative sizes: Large (L), Medium (M), and Small (S). Autophagy is an intracellular pathway that allows for the degradation of cytoplasmic organelles during cellular stress, and is also an important host response mechanism during several pathogenic infections. The role of autophagy during viral infections is complex. In some cases, it slows the progression of the infection, whereas, in some other cases the virus uses the autophagy system to enhance its replication. In a previous publication, we have demonstrated that exosomes released from cells infected with RVFV (designated as EXi-RVFV) protect the cells that receive them against RVFV infection through activation of autophagy. The results showed that EXi-RVFV activate the viral RNA sensor RIG-I to cause IFN-B activation and that IFN-B in turn activates autophagy. Thus, treatment of naïve U937 monocytes with EXi-RVFV leads to a significant (2 fold) induction of autophagy as compared to untreated cells or cells treated with equivalent amounts of exosomes purified from uninfected cells (EXu). We have also deciphered the molecular mechanisms through which IFN-B activation leads to activation of autophagy in the recipient cells. Our result show that the signaling proteins AKT, mTOR, and ERK1/2 are involved in the observed autophagy activation, as well as the core autophagy proteins Beclin1 and ATG5. Furthermore, we have analyzed the type of autophagy involved, to determine whether the LC3-Associated Phagocytosis (LAP) or the canonical autophagy pathway becomes engaged. Based on both protein marker analysis and electron microscopy studies, we have demonstrated that the canonical pathway and not LAP autophagy is induced by EXi-RVFV treatment of naïve U937 cells. These results provide insights into the host response mechanisms that can be utilized towards development of novel countermeasures against RVFV in the future. This work is embargoed by the author and will not be publicly available until 2024-08-31.2024-08-3

Stigmatization occurs when individuals with physical or psychological disorders interact with societal stereotypes. The aim of this study was to explore the perceived social stigma surrounding CL among people residing in Hubuna, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional community-based survey recruited 618 individuals aged 18 years and above using the snowball sampling technique to reach hidden cases within the target population. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire and the Explanatory Model Interview Catalogue for Perceived Social Stigma (EMIC-SS-12) was used to assess the level of perceived social stigma. It includes questions on demographic variables, behaviors, and experiences. The analysis was performed using SPSS.Results: The study included 618 participants, the majority of whom were women and girls (54.2%), with a mean age of 28 ± 12.7 years. The median score for perceived social stigma was 26.0. Only 2.1% (n = 13) of participants had the highest EMIC-SS-12 score of 36, while 7.6% (n = 47) scored zero. The mean score for overall perceived social stigma was 1.89 ± 0.91, while the mean score for experienced stigma was 1.99 ± 1.02. Univariate analysis showed that sex, employment, location of lesions, and number of lesions were insignificantly associated with stigmatization (P-value < 0.05), because these associations were uncertain because the CI includes or very close to 1.Conclusion: The study reveals insights into stigmatization associated with CL in the Habuna area of Saudi Arabia. It found that the median of perceived social stigma was 26. Factors such as sex, employment status, and location of the lesion are uncertainly associated with stigma. It is crucial to explore negative behaviors and perceptions and develop suitable health education programs. Keywords: social stigma, cutaneous leishmaniasis, Hubuna, Saudi Arabia, infectious disease
