Fiber-optic sensors offer unique benefits within the field of experimental thermodynamics due to their small size and inert all-fiber design. Interrogation of the reflected signal enables insertion probes able to monitor harsh conditions, with fast response and minimal impact on the system. This thesis presents the development process – from understanding the fabrication and the associated challenges, through a proof-of-concept realization, to the application of fiberoptic sensors to study phase transitions. The multi-mode fiber interferometers used are a simple and robust class of fiber-optic sensors, which can be designed to be sensitive to temperature, strain and refractive index (RI). The interference spectrum depends solely on the propagation constants and the geometry of the sensor, which is fabricated by splicing a section of coreless or thin-core fiber to the distal end of an optical fiber. Despite the simple fabrication, it is challenging to achieve a reproducible optical response. The thesis addresses this by investigating how inaccuracies in the geometry affect the ensemble of modes that is excited, and how this affects the produced spectrum. Guided-mode propagation simulations show that deviations in the cleave angle of the fiber end-face are more significant than inaccuracies in the spliced region. In the experimental results, however, large variations are observed independent of the cleave angle. It is concluded that the spliced region, which is more difficult to measure, plays a significant role in the produced spectrum. The thesis proceeds to demonstrate how multi-mode fiber interferometers can be used in conjunction with a fiber-Bragg grating (FBG) to analyze phase transitions in binary mixtures of ethanol and water. The temperature and strain sensitivity of the FBG is used to decouple these parameters from the multi-mode interferometer (MMI) response. The remaining RI sensitivity of the MMI is used to measure the increased ethanol concentration caused by pure ice forming in the mixture. The measured melting points show excellent agreement with tabulated values. The sensor system developed is then used to study ice formation in supercooled water-alcohol mixtures. The results are compared to theoretical predictions from heterogeneous nucleation theory. The effect on the nucleation barrier from solute type and concentration is studied, as well as the reduction in this barrier as a function of container material and pre-experiment rinsing procedures. Because of the dependency of the nucleation rate on the self-diffusivity of water, ice growth rates are measured in different ethanol concentrations to estimate the diffusivity at the liquid-solid interface

This thesis aims to measure the cooling capability of Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). The temperature has been shown to have a significant impact on the longevity of the batteries. A proper cooling system and an optimized design of the thermal management system (TMS) are essential to ensure that the operating temperature is within a safe range during cycling. This prevents overheating and reduces the risk of fire and explosion. The study investigates the cooling potential of LiBs by examining different cooling setups at various frequencies and their impact on heat dissipation. This is explored by evaluating the thermal conductivity of the electrodes, analyzing Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images, and measuring the Cell Cooling Coefficient (CCC). Results from the CCC method indicate that an increase in the frequency range from 0.25Hz to 1Hz does not affect the CCC_Surface and remains approximately 0.8W/K for both cases. Furthermore, thermal conductivity measurements gave detailed information on heat transport in the battery. Noticeable variations were observed in the thermal conductivity for dry and wet electrodes under different compaction pressure. SEM images confirm that the battery functioned normally during the CCC measurements and gives an understanding of the thermal properties and electrochemical reactions that occurs in the battery. The findings of this thesis contribute to the understanding of the thermal properties and thermal management requirements of LiBs. This is a foundation for further research and investigation in cooling systems, which are required to meet the increasing demand for LiBs

The purpose of this project is to investigate the thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and heat generation of semi-solid state lithium-ion batteries (LIB), and compare these to the thermal properties of conventional LIBs. Semi-solid state LIB technology is a new and promising technology meant to improve on the industry standard. While the conventional LIB technology contains solid electrodes and liquid electrolyte, the electrodes and electrolyte of the semi-solid state LIBs are co-suspended, creating a clay-like structure. This way, several components and production steps are eliminated, making the technology cheaper and easier to manufacture, and lowering the energy consumption during production. The semi-solid state electrodes can also be produced thicker than conventional electrodes, causing an increase in relative percentage of active material to inactive material. This leads to an increase in energy density. Due to the clay-like structure, the batteries can be formed into different shapes, making them viable for wearable technology as well as being able to sustain more mechanical stress. The theory section of this thesis describes the fundamentals of lithium-ion batteries, e.g. the composition of the batteries themselves and ageing mechanisms. This part of the thesis also presents the fundamentals of heat transfer, as well as some general battery terminologies. To measure the thermal conductivity, a previously constructed setup made to measure thermal conductivity in electrode material is used. To measure specific heat capacity, thermocouples taped to an insulated water bath of Styrofoam with a given temperature is used. Here, the heated pouch cells are placed and the temperature development in the system is measured. After conducting formation cycles, the internal resistance is found by conducting Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) tests at different states of charge (SOC). The specific heat generation is then calculated from the internal resistance. From the results gathered, the semi-solid state LIBs exhibits both a higher thermal conductivity and higher specific heat capacity. For the HPPC-testing, due to a broken current collector, broken tabs, or a suspected internal short circuit, only two of the conventional cells and unfortunately none of the semi-solid state cells were able to produce results. However, due to the increased thickness and therefore diffusion distance in the electrodes of the semi-solid state cells, the internal resistance and specific heat generation is expected to be greater than for the conventional cells

In this thesis, a single-mode optical fiber has been implemented into a lithium-ion battery (LiB) to measure the change in concentration in the battery. As the need of energy storage is increasing, due to growth in renewable energy production, a focus is directed toward the research and production of LiB as a proven and promising technology. However, one of the biggest problems of LiB is the lifespan of the batteries, leading to a need for a better knowledge of the capacity changes and the concentration changes of lithium in the batteries. As of now, lithium concentration has been measured post-mortem, however, few studies have been done in-situ. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the change in concentration while the battery is cycling. This will be done based on the changes in the refractive index measured by an optical fiber. The sensor is temperature and concentration calibrated. Then the batteries are cycled through CCCV cycles of C/20, C/10, C/2, 1C, 2C and 3C. The results show the measurements of reflected intensity and concentration could vary depending on several variables but that during cycling a SoC-dependent pattern was formed. This is important because it shows that the sensor is working and can be used to get a better understanding of the change in concentration and capacity

Internal Temperature measurements in Li-ion Pouch Cell using FBG

Glass capillaries was used to isolate the sensors from strain contributions. To protect the capillaries at the entry point, a polypropylene bracket was used. The impact on the cell performance due to the sensor implementation was evaluated by examining change in capacity and internal resistance. Furthermore, temperature measurements was made during cycling of the cell to evaluate the performance of the sensors. It was found that the bracket protected the capillaries at the entry point of the cell as designed. However, due to the distortion of the cell pouch during vacuum sealing the capillaries had a tendency to break inside the cell. It was attempted to correct this by reducing the vacuum in the sealing process, but this lead to an insufficient seal and cell moisture ingress was present. Information about the cell electrolyte was also not available, which resulted in an unfavorable composition of the refilled electrolyte solvent. This made it difficult to determine whether the reduction in capacity of 10\% and increase of internal resistance of 17\% and 7\% at 20\% SOC and 40\% SOC respectively was due to the change in electrolyte composition or the presence of sensors inside the cell. The temperature measurement showed expected values of 2.75\degree C difference between internal and external sensors at 2 C discharge, indicating that the capillaries successfully eliminated any strain contributions. Furthermore, the observed temperature gradients demonstrate the value of internal measurements in LIBs
