Aim: to evaluate the effect of body weight on the occurrence of spontaneous alveolar bone loss in Wistar rats. Material and methods: Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided in two groups. Control group received standardized rat chow diet and water. Test group received high fat/hypercaloric diet during 17 weeks. The diet was available for both groups ad libitum. Body weight and Lee Index were evaluated. At the end of the experimental period, rats were killed by decapitation and maxillae were defleshed with 9% sodium hypochlorite. Morphometric analysis was performed in digital standard photographs. Presence of spontaneous periodontal breakdown was considered when median alveolar bone loss was ≥.51mm. Statistical analysis was performed with chi-square test, Mann-Whitney test and independent samples t-test (significance level P≤0.05). Results: After 17 weeks of exposure to standard cafeteria (CAF) diet, a statistically significant mean difference in body weight (g±SD) (478±43 vs. 580±60) and Lee Index (3.07±0.05 vs. 3.24±0.07) was observed between groups suggesting obesity in test group. Median of alveolar bone loss (mm±SD) for test and control groups was .45±.17 and .41±.08, respectively. In animals submitted to cafeteria diet, 20 sites were classified as spontaneous periodontal breakdown, whereas in control animals, only 8 sites exhibited periodontal breakdown according to the cut-off point. A statistically significant difference among groups was detected (P=.009). Conclusion: It may be concluded that obesity increases spontaneous periodontal breakdown in Wistar rats

Aim: To compare surgical (ST) and non-surgical (NST) debridement for the treatment of periimplantitis in a multi-center randomized controlled trial with 12 months follow-up. Material and Methods: 45 individuals with 63 implants with probing depth (PPD) ≥5mm, bleeding on probing (BOP) and radiographic bone loss (BL) ≥3mm were included. In the NST (30 implants), submucosal debridement was performed under local anesthesia. In the ST (33 implants), a mucoperiosteal flap was raised and the surfaces were decontaminated also only by debridement with curettes as made in the NST. Clinical parameters, radiographs and peri-implant crevicular fluid samples were taken at baseline and after 12 months. Results: After 12 months, there were no significant differences in PPD changes between NST (4.15±0.25 to 3.25±0.23mm) and ST (3.74±0.22. to 3.03±0.26mm). BOP significantly reduced from approximately 60% to 35% in both groups. TIMP, MMP-8, RANKL, OPG and OPN significantly reduced in both groups, without statistical differences between them. When sites with bone loss ³3mm at baseline were analyzed, there was a significant difference between groups in radiographic bone gain after 12 months (ST=0.78mm compared to NST=0.25mm; p=0.03). Conclusions: Both treatments improved clinical parameters and local inflammatory biomarkers. Better bone levels were achieved after surgical treatment, but the relevance of such difference needs to be evaluated in a long-term

Objectives: to assess the association between gingival recession (GR) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a Brazilian population of adults. Methods: a representative sample from Porto Alegre city was drawn in 2011 using a multistage probability sampling strategy. For this study, 740 individuals, 35-59 years of age and with ≥6 teeth were included. GR was assessed by two calibrated examiners at four sites in all present teeth. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to assess OHRQoL. OHIP-14 was dichotomized using “fairly often” as the cut-off point for a negative impact. Multiple logistic regression models were fitted to define which descriptors of GR were associated with the dichotomous outcome of OHIP-14 adjusting for age, gender, socioeconomic status, smoking, dental care and missing teeth. Results: Mean OHIP was significantly higher for individuals with ≥1 tooth with GR ≥2mm, ≥3mm, ≥4mm, and ≥5mm. Individuals with ≥1 tooth with GR ≥2mm had approximately 2 times higher chance of having a negative impact compared to individuals without GR of this threshold [odds ratio (OR)=1.99; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-3.78]. When buccal and proximal sites were analyzed separately, the presence of GR was significantly associated with worst quality of life only in anterior and not in posterior teeth. GR in the lower arch had no impact on OHRQoL. Conclusions: OHRQoL of this adult population decreases in the presence of GR, mainly in upper and anterior teeth

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
