    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Information fusion for CB defense applications: Challenge and opportunity

The sources include sensors of various modalities and characteristics, as well as sources which are not sensors. We discuss the challenges of information fusion, technical directions and approaches that can cope with those challenges, and the opportunities those approaches enable.     Profiling the molecular difference between Patched- and p53-dependent rhabdomyosarcoma

    Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly malignant tumor that is histologically related to skeletal muscle, yet genetic and molecular lesions underlying its genesis and progression remain largely unknown. In this study we have compared the molecular profiles of two different mouse models of RMS, each associated with a defined primary genetic defect known to play a role in rhabdomyosarco-magenesis in man. We report that RMS of heterozygous Patched1 (Ptch1) mice show less aggressive growth and a greater degree of differentiation than RMS of heterozygous p53 mice. By means of cDNA microarray analysis we demonstrate that RMS in Ptch1 mutants predominantly express a number of myogenic markers, including myogenic differentiation 1, myosin heavy chain, actin, troponin and tropomyosin, as well as genes associated with Hedgehog/Patched signaling like insulin-like growth factor 2, forkhead box gene Foxf1 and the growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible gene Gadd45a. In sharp contrast, RMS in p53 mutants display higher expression levels of cell cycle-associated genes like cyclin B1, cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and the proliferation marker Ki-67. These results demonstrate that different causative mutations lead to distinct gene expression profiles in RMS, which appear to reflect their different biological characteristics. Our results provide a first step towards a molecular classification of different forms of RMS. If the described differences can be confirmed in human RMS our results will contribute to a new molecular taxonomy of this cancer, which will be critical for gene mutation- and expression-specific therapy

    Owing to concerns about climate change, California and several other states have passed laws phasing out high global warming potential refrigerants in HVAC and refrigeration systems. In the near term, the most likely replacements are A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerants. Area monitoring detectors will be required for most future residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC systems that use A2L refrigerants. These detectors must operate continuously, preferably without service for many years. The UL 60335-2-40 (2019) standard requires these detectors to respond within 10 s to a concentration of 100% of the LFL. Inexpensive detectors that meet these requirements have been slow to develop which has delayed the adoption of A2L refrigerants. A technology with good potential is based on metal-oxide semiconductors (MOS). MOS detectors from Figaro are tested here, considering their response to leaks of R-32 and R-454B. They are characterized according to sensitivity, response time, recovery time, and poisoning. The sensors do not satisfy the 10 s response time for R-32 or R-454B at the 25% LFL equivalent voltage, but succeed at the 10% LFL equivalent voltage. Their steady-state output is linear with respect to the logarithm of concentration. However, both response time and linearity are subject to possible poisoning and aging. Although the MOS sensor performance is generally acceptable, poisoning and lifetime remain a concern
