MALE AND FEMALE DIFFERENCES IN COLOUR NAMING, A CASE STUDY OF FIB UI ENGLISH STUDENTS

    No full text
Male and female are not only differentiated by their physical and emotional condition. There are many other aspects that can be explained to prove male and female differences, one of those differences can be seen by how they name colour. Using Lakoff’s theory, which talks about female and male differences in colour naming, as the main theory, this research is conducted. Using ten FIB UI English students as the sample, five males and five females, this research aims to prove Lakoff’s theory whether it is suitable with the condition of FIB UI English students or not. Besides, by the end of this research, readers can find some other aspects which can affect one’s colour vocabulary besides gender differences. At the end of the research, I can say that Lakoff’s theory about female and male differences in colour naming is more or less similar with the condition of FIB UI English students.</jats:p

Imperialisme Budaya Barat Pada Rubrik Mode Majalah Remaja (Kajian Semiotika Majalah Gadis)

Kata kunci: imperialisme budaya barat, tren mode, rubrik mode, remaja putri Cultural imperialism, especially the western culture such as America and Europe has been highly developed in Indonesia, particularly among teenagers especially girls. Lifestyle and western culture's way of dressing trend is the most visible aspect to see the domination of western culture. Teen magazines have a stake in channeling values and meanings of western culture through the signs found on their fashion rubrics. This study use Roland Barthes's semiotics to analyze the development of western cultural imperialism by looking at signs and meanings contained in section teen fashion magazine, called Gadis during the four eras starting from the development of fashion trends among Indonesian teens that starts from the year 1970 until 2000 era. The results showed that Gadis's fashion rubric is dominated by western culture ranging from clothing styles that we clearly adapting western trends, photo models who's always have a Caucasian profile, and text which use a lot of english language in it. Although Gadis had tried to eliminate the influence of the west in 1990, but in 2000 returned with many more aspects of the west to follow the trend that favored readers. This means that western cultural imperialism has been very closely with Indonesian teenagers and difficult to remove.
