    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Study on Electronic States and Local Structure for Strongly Correlated Amorphous Alloy Ce-Al

    室蘭工業大学Muroran Institute of Technology博士(工学)近年、アモルファス合金Ce-Alの高圧下で、低密度アモルファスクラスター(LDC)と高密度アモルファスクラスター(HDC)が共存する「ポリアモルフィズム状態」が報告された。この状態は、磁性に寄与するCeの4f電子の局在 ・非局在に起因するとされており、アモルファスのようなランダムポテンシャルにおける電子物性の解明に向けた重要なステップとして注目されている。アモルファスCe系合金の低温物性についてはこれまでに、重い電子系に特徴的な巨大な電子比熱係数γ (> 100 mJ/molK2)や低温電気抵抗のT2の巨大な係数A (> 0.02μΩcm/K2)が観測されており、構造が非周期的であっても強相関電子状態が形成されると考えられている。さらに、アモルファス合金(a-)Ce50Al50(添え字はat%)では、低温において近藤効果および重い電子状態に加え、不規則系に見られる電子の弱局在効果が認められており、不規則系における構造と電子状態の関係が注目されている。本研究では、DC高速スパッタリング法を用いてアモルファスa-Ce50-xLaxAl50およびa-CexAl100-x合金を作製し、その局所構造および電子物性を明らかにし、構造不規則系における局所構造と電子相関を議論した。 a-Ce50Al50のCeに対し、同じ希土類で4f電子を持たないLaを部分的に置換したa-Ce50-xLaxAl50において,磁化率、比熱、X線光電子分光(XPS)を測定した結果、Ceの原子価数はほぼ三価であることが示された。しかし、Ceの常磁性有効磁気モーメントは、Ce3+で期待される値より小さかった。これは高温においてもCeの4f電子が伝導電子と混成状態にあることに起因している。また、Ce原子1 molあたりの電子比熱係数γCeはおよそ200 mJ Ce-mol-1 K-2で、La置換してもおおむね一定である。これらの結果から、アモルファスCe-Al合金におけるLaの置換はCeの4f電子と伝導電子の混成効果に対して大きな影響を及ぼさず、そのエネルギーの指標となる近藤温度が広い温度範囲に分布していることを結論した。 Ce原子の局所環境と電子間相互作用の関係を明らかにするため、2元系のa-CexAl100-x (x = 25, 50)に対して粉末X線回折測定を行い、還元二体分布関数G(r)を見積もり、その局所構造を明らかにした。その結果、a-Ce25Al75のG(r)のメインピークは、Ce-Alの結合に対応していることが明らかになった。一方、a-Ce50Al50はG(r)のピークに分離が観測され,それらは2種類のCe-Ce原子間距離に対応すると考えられる。磁気抵抗において、a-Ce25Al75がa-Ce50Al50に比べてより強い磁場感度を示す原因が、これらの局所構造の違いによって空間的に不均一な近藤効果が生じている可能性を指摘した。また、どちらの組成比においても局在化したf電子と弱く混成している2つのCeサイトの存在を指摘し、本来、磁場により誘 起される磁気スピンは、構造的乱れおよび混成の空間的分布によって抑制されていることが 示唆された。さらに、a-Ce50Al50 におけるコヒーレントおよびインコヒーレント近藤効果の 共存は、その起源が局所構造に由来すると考えられる。 本研究は、局所構造解析および電気伝導・磁気測定を通じて、強相関アモルファス合金 Ce-Alにおける局所構造と電子相関の解明を目的とした。Ceに対するLaの置換はコヒーレン ト状態の形成を妨げる一方で、局所構造中に分布するCe原子による局所的な近藤状態には 影響を及ぼさないことが明らかとなった。さらに、二元系Ce-Alの構造解析によって、a-Ce5 0Al50の局所構造中に2種類のCe-Ce原子間距離が存在することが確認された。これに基づき、 磁気抵抗との組み合わせから、異なる局所構造が空間的に不均一な混成を引き起こし、磁気 散乱を抑制するとともに、2つの異なる近藤効果の混合をもたらすことが示唆された。Recent studies have revealed that Ce-Al amorphous alloys exhibit the coexistence of Low- Density Cluster (LDC) and High-Density Cluster (HDC) clusters under high pressure, driven by the localization/delocalization transition of Ce 4f electrons. This has deepened our understanding of electron behavior in disordered structures. Amorphous Ce-based alloys exhibit a large electronic specific heat coefficient γ (> 100 mJ/molK2) and T2 dependence with a large coefficient A (> 0.02μΩcm/K2) at low temperature. This behavior originates from the hybridization between conduction electrons and Ce 4f electrons, indicating strongly correlated electron states in a structurally disordered system. Notably, Ce50Al50 (the suffix is atomic percent) shows both the Kondo effect/heavy fermion states and a weak localization at low temperatures, underscoring the importance of its underlying structural complexity concerning electronic behavior. In this study, amorphous a-Ce50- xLaxAl50 and a-CexAl100-x alloys were prepared using DC high-rate sputtering methods. Their local structures and electronic properties were examined to investigate the atomic environments and electron correlations in disordered systems. The main results are summarized as follows: Substitution of Ce atoms with La (without 4f electrons) and measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was confirmed that the Ce valence in a-Ce50-xLaxAl50 is almost trivalent and exhibits hybridization with conduction electrons at room temperature. This hybridization reduces the value of paramagnetic effective magnetic moment and persists down to low temperatures. In addition, the γCe in 1 mol of Ce is almost constant in each Ce concentration (≈ 200 mJ mol-1 K-2). It was concluded that the La substitution in amorphous Ce- Al alloys does not significantly affect the hybridization of the conduction electrons with the Ce 4f electrons, whose characteristic energy scale, the Kondo temperature, is distributed over a wide temperature range. To elucidate the relationship between the Ce atomic environment and electron behavior, we performed powder X-ray diffraction measurements on binary amorphous alloys a-CexAl100-x. It was concluded that the Ce25Al75 favors Ce-Al nearest-neighbor interactions, while Ce50Al50 exhibits a coexistence of two structural motifs characterized by a splitting Ce-Ce distribution. The structural difference is responsible for the Ce25Al75 displaying a stronger negative magnetoresistance and magnetic field sensitivity than Ce50Al50, as limited magnetic disorder due to a uniform atomic environment of Ce25Al75, while complex local electronic interactions of Ce50Al50 and spatially inhomogeneous Kondo behavior. Both compositions exhibited evidence of partially localized f-electron states or weakly hybridized Ce sites, with field-induced alignment hindered by structural disorder and variations in hybridization. It was concluded that the mixture of coherent and incoherent Kondo effects of Ce50Al50 can be traced back to the structural origin. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the electronic states and local structure for strongly correlated amorphous alloy Ce-Al, through local structural analysis as well as electrical and magnetic measurements. It was found that La substitution suppresses the formation of a coherent state. At the same time, it does not affect the local Kondo states induced by Ce atoms randomly distributed within the local structure. Furthermore, structural analysis of the binary alloy a-Ce-Al confirmed the coexistence of two Ce-Ce interatomic distances structural motifs within the local structure of Ce50Al50. Based on this finding, in combination with magnetoresistance measurements, it was indicated that differences in local structure led to spatially inhomogeneous hybridization, suppressing magnetic scattering and resulting in a mixture of two different types of Kondo effects.doctoral thesi

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
