This text reproduces the first part of a longer paper written by professor Fabio Erber upon a request by ECLAC [Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean]; and which was published in 2010. In this article the author presents a summary of all the debating on technological innovation in Brazil from 1990 on. Drawing on the unique expertise which has always been thehallmark of his academic life, Fabio Erber has managed to systematize the Brazilian debate on the characteristics and determinants of the performance of the country’s companies as regards to technological innovation
The Problem of Money Illusion in Economics
Money illusion in economic theory has been an assumption rejected for academic economists for quite some time. However, with the gradual diffusion of behavioural economics based on experimental research this has changed. Now, it has become a respected fact to accept money illusion as a stylized fact of human behaviour. However, it still needs a better understanding why monetary phenomena especially related to financial markets play an important role in understanding the real economy, the production, consumption and exchange of commodities and services. The author of this paper suggests that financial markets are particular engaged in intertemporal valuation problems which are common to any kind of economic activity. Since money is the unit of account, accounting problems related to the uncertain nature of future economic development makes a continuous readjustment of valuations in money units necessary. However, financial markets are imperfect as Minsky has pointed out. Because of these imperfections the possibility of significant long-lasting valuation problems emerges. One reason for this is that in standard economic reasoning the problem of intentional cheating is neglected. Furthermore major innovations like e.g. the ICT revolution with the Internet or the introduction of securitization as a means to redistribute risk as general purpose innovations make valuations of the long term to medium term impacts on the economy extremely difficult. The recent financial market bubbles are significantly related to such general purpose innovations. If monetary policy fails to control for irrational exuberance of investors about the future benefits and profits of such innovations, this inherently embodies the risk of a financial market shock, if expectations of the general public have to adjust after overoptimistic prediction about the future economic development. The author, however, considers that there are some early warning indicators which would give the possibility of timely action of policy makers to control financial market bubbles. The complacency of monetary authorities of the past decades to do so, has not primarily a diagnostic problem to deal with money illusion, but even more so with vested interests of insiders of private investors on the institution to control unlawful behaviour. By weakening the regulatory framework, failing to establish transparency and accountability of agents eager to get rich as fast as possible without taking into regard the rules of good governance the current global financial crisis of institutional failure to contain the instability of financial markets to an acceptable social level. Money illusion is so as well an expression that unfounded optimism about the self-regulatory discipline of market participates is sufficient to stop financial markets get out of control to an historical unprecedented level.Money Illusion; Imperfect Financial Markets; Regulatory Failure; Behavioural Finance
A ultrapassagem das fronteiras: hibridismo e universalismo na obra de Laura Erber
This article examines two literary works by the writer, visual artist and educator Laura Erber, exploring the coexistence in her writing of certain trends of post-modern Brazilian literature, such as hybrid textual genres, inter-artistic dialogues, the foregrounding of a metafictional dimension, or new ways of writing the self and of the literary theme of travel. This essay therefore starts with an analysis of Bénédicte vê o mar (2011), a short, graphic, poetic romance, or rather graphic book of verse, and Esquilos de Pavlov (2013), an atypical “artist’s romance”. These two works are endowed with an admirable freedom of expression and a deep understanding of the challenges that contemporary literary writing faces. These facets, in turn, serve to generate a critical interrogation that intertwines two themes: being and artistic creation. This article therefore examines how the crisis of contemporary art: in literature, film and the visual arts - allows the author to establish a cultural dialogue that transcends the boundaries of the national to encompass a broader context. TGF-alpha and IL-6 plasma levels selectively identify CML patients who fail to achieve an early molecular response or progress in the first year of therapy
Data source: Supplementary data, http://www.nature.com/leu/journal/v30/n6/suppinfo/leu201634s1.htmlEarly molecular response (EMR, BCR-ABL1 (IS)⩽10% at 3 months) is a strong predictor of outcome in imatinib-treated chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CP-CML) patients, but for patients who transform early, 3 months may be too late for effective therapeutic intervention. Here, we employed multiplex cytokine profiling of plasma samples to test newly diagnosed CP-CML patients who subsequently received imatinib treatment. A wide range of pro-inflammatory and angiogenesis-promoting cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were elevated in the plasma of CML patients compared with that of healthy donors. Most of these normalized after tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment while others remained high in remission samples. Importantly, we identified TGF-α and IL-6 as novel biomarkers with high diagnostic plasma levels strongly predictive of subsequent failure to achieve EMR and deep molecular response, as well as transformation to blast crisis and event-free survival. Interestingly, high TGF-α alone can also delineate a poor response group raising the possibility of a pathogenic role. This suggests that the incorporation of these simple measurements to the diagnostic work-up of CP-CML patients may enable therapy intensity to be individualized early according to the cytokine-risk profile of the patient.E Nievergall, J Reynolds, CH Kok, DB Watkins, M Biondo, SJ Busfield, G Vairo, K Fuller, WN Erber, T Sadras, R Grose, DT Yeung, AF Lopez, DK Hiwase, TP Hughes and DL Whit
To Dance or Not to Dance? A Dancer\u27s Journey to Becoming a Movement Therapist
This thesis explores the impact of the word dance on people’s idea of what dance/movement therapy is. Dance/movement therapy was created by dancers who realized that dance had the ability to be therapeutic. In the 1940s in the United States, when dance/movement therapy was established, dance was not what it is today. Dance has expanded and is now seen in competitions, television/movies, and social media, which places a strong emphasis on the validation from others. The author aims to look at this shift in dance and how ideas present within dance do not align with the focus of dance/movement therapy. Through an exploration of personal experience, the history of dance and dance/movement therapy, and professional identity, the author looks to examine how dance fits into their own practice of dance/movement therapy
