Charles Brockden Brown\u27s Wieland or, fiction as an instrument of salvation in post-revolutionary America
No full textWhen in 1798 Brown finished writing Wieland or, the Transformation, an American Tale, he sent a copy of the book to Thomas Jefferson, who was then Vice President of the United States. The fact that Brown intended his text to be read for the first time by such an outstanding figure of the nation shows that he had written the novel with a clear aim in mind. Retaking Jane Tompkins\u27s reading of the novel as a work useful in the area of national politics, I will discuss that this text is firmly rooted in the historical background of post-Revolutionary America and that as such, it is a desperate warning note on the dangers lurking within the optimistic dream of a new society. From this point of view, I read Wieland neither as an expression of Brown\u27s preoccupation with art and artifice, nor as a symbolic representation of the universal dark side of human consciousness, nor as a battle between Calvinist pessimism and the merits of Enlightenment idealism. Neither do I read it as a political tract, but as a post-revolutionary jeremiad which encapsulates a passionate analysis on some aspects of eighteenth-century American thought and culture. Consequently, the two different sets of components —Gothic elements and explorations of social, political and philosophical questions— are made to serve one main objective: the dissection of the American mission and of the happy assurances of national self-fulfillment endorsed by the Republican ideology

Narrative representation in Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre
No full textThis study aims to address a number of issues. What type of novel is Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahrel How modem or forward-looking is Goethe's novel? What methods does Goethe use for presenting the events and characters of his novel? An approach from the point of view of narrative technique is adopted to provide answers to these questions. Taking the theories of Wayne Booth, Percy Lubbock, Gerard Genette, Eberhard Lanimert and Michael Toolan, I examine showing (modem) and telling (archaic) as a question both of voice and of detail, and then look at direct methods of presenting 'thought' in the text (i.e. commentary and sententiousness) in comparison with indirect methods (implication, motif and indirection).Applying these concepts to Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, the novel opens in a scene - the action and dialogue emerge from this scene. This forward-looking opening establishes a norm of situation-bound dialogue and episodic chapters. The modem novel’s obsession with the depiction of external features and surface details is shunned. The degree of reference to the existing genre is underlined by the widespread use of sententious discourse by both narrator and characters. However, by comparison, Goethe's use of sententious discourse is complex. The treatment of central themes ('Bildung' and 'Heilung') and central characters (Mignon, Philine and the Turmgesellschaft) is examined as a study of Goethe's techniques of implication. The conventional presentation of Philine (she is defined) is contrasted with the way in which Mignon is never summarised or even commented upon. In conclusion, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre is compared with the earlier Geschichte des Agathon (Wieland) and the later Effi Briest (Fontane). In terms of the degree of scene, the external presentation of Mignon and the implicating process used in the treatment of key themes, Goethe's novel anticipates the realistic novel. Nevertheless, in its use of sententiousness and its cursory scene-setting, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre does look back to Agathon
Total synthesis of [-]-anominine via target-directed organocatalysis: an asymmetric approach to the wieland-miescher ketone and analogues
No full text[spa] La tesis doctoral consta de dos bloques principales. El primero es un estudio metodológico donde se estudia la preparación enantioselectiva de derivados de la cetona de Wieland-Miescher que posteriormente se empleará en el segundo bloque que es la síntesis total del diterpenoide fúngico anominina. En el estudio metodológico se implementó un catalizador que promoviese la reacción aldólica de forma estereoselectiva, tanto inter- como intramolecular. El estudio se centró en la reacción aldólica intramolecular de cetonas (anelación de Robinson) obteniendo distintos derivados de la cetona de Wieland-Miescher sustituidos en la posición 8a (metilo, alilo, dimetilalilo, bencilo, propargilo, homoalilo, isohexilo, isohexenilo y hasta 11 ejemplos). La metodología desarrollada evita el uso de disolventes, tanto en la reacción como en su purificación, consiguiendo así un protocolo más barato económicamente y que respeta el medio ambiente. Se probaron distintos catalizadores ya conocidos para esta transformación siendo el mejor N-tosyl-(Sa)-binam-L-prolinamida. Los rendimientos químicos y ópticos obtenidos (hasta 93% rendimiento y 97% ee con 2.5 mol% de catalizador) son notablemente superiores a los descritos anteriormente en la literatura y, teniendo en cuenta que la cetona de Wieland-Miescher es un precursor muy importante para la síntesis de terpenos y esteroides (como por ejemplo el agente antitumoral taxol), hace que esta mejora suponga un avance metodológico importante. El segundo bloque corresponde a la primera síntesis estereoselectiva del diterpenoide anominina, aislado del esclerocio del hongo Aspergillus nomius. Dicho producto natural presenta actividades insecticidas del orden de los piretroides comerciales frente a la especie Helicoverpa zea, una de las plagas más importantes en EUA en términos de pérdidas económicas. En esta parte de la tesis se utilizó la metodología desarrollada en el primer bloque para preparar estereoselectivamente el biciclo precursor de la síntesis. Una vez fijado el primer centro estereogénico se utilizó su inducción asimétrica para instalar los sucesivos estereocentros. Así, las reacciones claves para la síntesis son: la adición conjugada de metilcuprato para generar estereoselectivamente el segundo centro cuaternario; una transposición 2,3-sigmatrópica de selenóxido; una hidrogenación quimioselectiva; una oxidación alílica mediada por microondas; una adición conjugada de indol catalizada por tetracloruro de zirconio y una reacción quimioselectiva de metátesis de alquenos. Además, otros aspectos interesantes de la ruta sintética son el acoplamiento de reacciones consecutivas evitando purificaciones por cromatografía en columna, cosa que reduce los costes así como los tiempos de manipulación experimental. Finalmente, decir que la metodología desarrollada no sólo sirve para la preparación de dicho terpeno sino que supone también una ruta sintética hacia la familia de productos naturales aislados de hongos Aspergillus
