Genus Bicolorana Zeuner, 1941 Zeuner, F. E. (1941) The classification of Decticinae hitherto included in Platycleis Fieb. or Metrioptera Wesm. (Orthoptera, Saltatoria). Transactions of the Royal Entomological Society of London. 91, pp. 44, 45, Figure 26. Species typica: Locusta bicolor Philippi, 1830 (= Bicolorana bicolor bicolor) Philippi, R. A. (1830) Orthoptera Berolinensia. Dissertation, F. Nietack, Berlin. p. 24. Characters (According to Massa & Fontana, 2011): Head just larger than long, ratio maximum width/length of head (from vertex to clypeus): 1.1–1.2. Tegmina are generally abbreviated, but sometimes macropterous individuals of some species are found. Pronotum flat, just depressed, borders rounded, humeral excision just evident, keel present in the metazona; ♀ subgenital plate longer than wide, attenuated to the apex and incised, at the sides not touching the ovipositor; ovipositor comparatively short and thick, bent upwards beyond the apex of the subgenital plate; ♀ VI th–VII th sternites modified or not; hind femora long and slender, hind femora/pronotum length ♂♀: 3.7–3.8; ♂ X th tergite with two apical pointed processes, cerci long and apically flattened. Colour of lateral lobes of the pronotum is greenish; the whitish stripe is indistinct. Massa & Fontana (2011) listed three species in the genus Bicolorana: B. bicolor (Philippi, 1830) in Eurasia (with two subspecies, B. bicolor bicolor (Philippi, 1830) that is spread all over Eurasia, except for Mongolia where it is replaced by the second subspecies, B. bicolor angarica (Liana, 1987), B. kuntzeni (Ramme, 1931) distributed in N Adriatic area (Croatia, Slovenia and Italy) and B. burri (Uvarov, 1921) known only from Caucasus Mountain in Azerbaijan. We compared B. kraussi comb. nov. with B. bicolor and B. kuntzeni from type locality (Monte Maggiore = Učka Mountain) (Figure 2), both of them occurring in Croatia, and found out that the species is identical to B. kuntzeni (see the first paragraph of Results; Comparison between Bicolorana kuntzeni and Platycleis kraussi). We had two options, to synonymise B. kraussi with B. kuntzeni as a senior synonym or to synonymise B. kuntzeni with B. kraussi as a junior synonym. Thus, we consulted the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (further the Code) (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (further ICZN), 1999) to take a legitimate and correct action under this case. According to the Code (ICZN, 1999) an author is required not to displace name which has been used as valid by at least 10 authors in 25 publications during the past 50 years, and encompassing a span of not less than ten years, by an earlier synonym or homonym which has not been used as valid since 1899. Name Modestana kraussi was used five times in last 50 years—by Massa & Fontana (2011), Nadig (1987), Ragge (1990), Harz (1969) and Heller (1988). Name Bicolorana kuntzeni (and subsequent misspelling Bicoloriana kuntzeni) was used during past 50 years by 21 authors (1.Harz, 2.Nadig 3.Heller, 4.Fontana, 5.Buzzetti, 6.Cogo, 7.Odé, 8.Nagy, 9.Galvagni, 10.Massa, 11.Kleukers, 12. Gomboc, 13. Šegula, 14. Us, 15. Mikšić, 16. Korsunovskaya, 17. Ragge, 18. Vedenina, 19. Willemse, 20. Zhantiev and 21. Frantsevich) during a period of more than ten years, but in only 18 publications (as Metrioptera kuntzeni, Metrioptera (Metrioptera) kuntzeni, Metrioptera (Bicolorana) kuntzeni) (Mikšić 1968, 1976a, 1976 b, 1978, Harz 1969, Nadig 1987, Heller 1988, Us 1971, 1972, 1992, Ragge 1990, Heller et al. 1998, Fontana et al., 2002, Nagy, 2005, Galvagni, 2009, Massa & Fontana, 2011, Massa et al., 2013 and Gomboc & Šegula, 2014 a). It is important to point out that the name for Platycleis kraussi (as Platycleis kraussi, Metrioptera kraussi, Modestana kraussi, etc…) was not out of use during the last 50 years. According to information presented above, we concluded there was no legitimate reason to conserve the name and thus we made Bicolorana kuntzeni (Ramme, 1931) syn. nov. a subjective junior synonym of Bicolorana kraussi (Padewieth, 1900) comb. nov. according to the Principle of Priority, Article 23.1. of the Code (ICZN, 1999).Published as part of Skejo, Josip, Rebrina, Fran, Tvrtković, Nikola, Gomboc, Stanislav & Heller, Klaus-Gerhard, 2015, More than a century old ' Platycleis Kraussi case' finally resolved (Tettigoniidae: Platycleidini), pp. 497-524 in Zootaxa 3990 (4) on pages 512-513, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3990.4.2, http://zenodo.org/record/24511

Regaining Motor Control in Musician's Dystonia by Restoring Sensorimotor Organization

Professional musicians are an excellent human model of long term effects of skilled motor training on the structure and function of the motor system. However, such effects are accompanied by an increased risk of developing motor abnormalities, in particular musician's dystonia. Previously we found that there was an expanded spatial integration of proprioceptive input into the hand area of motor cortex (sensorimotor organisation, SMO) in healthy musicians as tested with a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm. In musician's dystonia, this expansion was even larger, resulting in a complete lack of somatotopic organisation. We hypothesised that the disordered motor control in musician's dystonia is a consequence of the disordered SMO. In the present paper we test this idea by giving pianists with musician's dystonia 15 min experience of a modified proprioceptive training task. This restored SMO towards that seen in healthy pianists. Crucially, motor control of the affected task improved significantly and objectively as measured with a MIDI piano, and the amount of behavioural improvement was significantly correlated to the degree of sensorimotor re-organisation. In healthy pianists and non-musicians, the SMO and motor performance remained essentially unchanged. These findings suggest a link between the differentiation of SMO in the hand motor cortex and the degree of motor control of intensively practiced tasks in highly skilled individuals

Marriage formation as a process intermediary between migration and childbearing

In studies of differences in fertility between migrants and non-migrants, marriage interferes because migration can be motivated by an impending marriage or can entail entry into a marriage market with new opportunities. One would therefore expect elevated fertility after migration, although a competing theory states that on the contrary fertility ought to be reduced in the time around the move because migration temporarily disturbs the life of the migrant. In any case marriage appears as a process that is intermediary between migration and childbearing. To handle such issues it pays to have a technique that allows the analyst to separate any disruptive effects of migration from any boosting effects of marriage in studies of childbearing. The purposes of the present paper is (i) to remind us that such a technique is available, in fact is straightforward, and (ii) to apply the technique to further analyze a set of data on migration and first-time parenthood in Kyrgyzstan recently used by the second author and Gunnar Andersson. The technique has the neat feature that it allows us to operate with several “clocks” at the same time. In the analysis of first births we keep track of time since migration (for migrants) and time since marriage formation (for the married) beside the respondent’s age (for women at childbearing ages); in other connections there may be more clocks. For such analyses we make use of a flexible graphical housekeeping device that allows the analyst to keep track of a feature like whether migration occurs before or after marriage, or at the same time. This is a half-century-old flow chart of statuses and transitions and is not much more complex that the famous Lexis diagram, which originated with Gustav Zeuner, as we now know. These reflexions were first presented at a symposium dedicated to Professor Zeuner.

FOS4CMS: More than a decade of uninterrupted FBG monitoring in the CMS Experiment at CERN

    No full text
This paper provides an extensive overview of more than a decade of continuous data collected by the Fiber Optic Sensing for CMS (FOS4CMS) network, featuring over 1000 Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. These FBG sensors have been instrumental in monitoring temperature and strain within the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Their strategic placement allowed for observation of crucial components, including the central beam pipe, silicon tracker, RPC muon detectors, and the underground cavern. Operational since 2009, the monitoring system underwent expansions during LHC Long Shutdowns (LS1 and LS2) and upgrades for LHC Run3. Leveraging Wavelength Division Multiplexing, the FBG sensors demonstrated reliability, seamlessly integrating into the CMS Detector Control System. In summary, the presented data robustly affirm the resilience of FBG sensors in the challenging High Energy Physics environment, with the FOS4CMS system's uninterrupted 24/7 operation over a decade marking a significant milestone in the successful application of FBG technology within the CMS experiment at CERN. © Optica Publishing Group 2023, © 2023 The Author(s

On-demand generation of background-free single photons from a solid-state source

    No full text
True on-demand high-repetition-rate single-photon sources are highly sought after for quantum information processing applications. However, any coherently driven two-level quantum system suffers from a finite re-excitation probability under pulsed excitation, causing undesirable multi-photon emission. Here, we present a solid-state source of on-demand single photons yielding a raw second-order coherence of g(2)(0)=(7.5±1.6)×10-5 without any background subtraction or data processing. To this date, this is the lowest value of g(2)(0) reported for any single-photon source even compared to the previously reported best background subtracted values. We achieve this result on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots embedded in a low-Q planar cavity by employing (i) a two-photon excitation process and (ii) a filtering and detection setup featuring two superconducting single-photon detectors with ultralow dark-count rates of (0.0056±0.0007) s-1 and (0.017±0.001) s-1, respectively. Re-excitation processes are dramatically suppressed by (i), while (ii) removes false coincidences resulting in a negligibly low noise floor.QN/Zwiller La

Improved thermal monitoring in particle accelerators using FBGs: first insights from the iPipe Project in LHC Run 3

    No full text
Particle accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, are planning to increase the intensity of circulating particle beams. However, this upgrade faces challenges due to beam-induced heating that can lead to operational issues and component damage. To address this, suitable monitoring systems are required. Fiber Optic Sensing using Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) has gained popularity in the High Energy Physics domain. This study focuses on iPipe, a monitoring system based on FBGs installed in the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment since 2015. FBG sensors offer advantages such as immunity to optoelectronic noise, intensity modulation, and radiation-induced losses. The iPipe system was recently upgraded and is currently acquiring data during LHC Run 3. The initial analysis of this data is presented in this paper. © Optica Publishing Group 2023, © 2023 The Author(s

social politics of the South Korean trade union movement

    No full text
The dissertation deals with criticism and sympathy with the social politics of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), the main representative of the »Democratic Trade Union Movement« (min-ju-no-jo-un-dong) of South Korea, in the transition from the »Social Reform Struggle« (sa-hoe-gae-hyeog-tu- jaeng) to the »Movement for Demarketized Public Value« (sa-hoe-gong-gong- seong-un-dong). The author focuses on the question, what kind of solidarity the KCTU and its affiliates organized in the course of building or developing their programs and demands on social policy. In doing so, he tries to develop an »exclusive-inclusive« concept of union solidarity. The results and evaluations of the single chapters come to the following conclusions: • Social policy issues, that had been in the South Korean trade union movement by then only of interest at the margin, gained importance for the KCTU in the examined period from 1995 to 2007 at a rapid pace. • The social policy of the KCTU had with regard to concrete goals, tasks and demands a strong tendency towards an inclusion of each time larger parts of the population. This tendency shows itself in the union solidarity of »inclusive« manner. • The strategies of the KCTU to enforce social policy goals and demands were more and more struggle- and grassroots-orientated, although they ofte had a tendency to be rather »compromise« than »struggle orientated«. The strategy of compromise orientation, which is directly related to the participation in the corporatist Korean Tripartite Commission (KTC), was an obstacle on the path to greater union solidarity. • However, at large the widespread assumption that the South Korean trade union movement is in a crisis, at least with regard to the development of the KCTU's social policy, can not be confirmed
