    Based on the self-adaptive multiple constraints routing algorithm (SAMCRA), an improved and exact version of our QoS routing algorithm, the tunable accuracy multiple constraints routing algorithm (TAMCRA) we have investigated QoS routing in a hop-by-hop manner because it forms the basis of IP networking as e.g. in OSPF. In particular, we studied `hop-by-hop destination based only' (HbHDBO) QoS routing that ignores the source and previous path history (as in current IP routing). We demonstrate that an exact QoS algorithm assures the avoidance of routing loops in this HbHDBO setting. However, despite the use of an exact QoS routing algorithm as SAMCRA, the exact solution cannot be guaranteed with HbHDBO routing. Fortunately, large simulation results on various sizes of random graphs show that the overall quality of the HbHDBO QoS routing is remarkably good. Finally, we show that, by using active networking as opposed to current IP routing, exact QoS routing in a hop-by-hop way can be guaranteed

    Australian Indigenous Hip Hop: The Politics of Culture, Identity, and Spirituality

    This book investigates the discursive and performative strategies employed by Australian Indigenous rappers to make sense of the world and establish a position of authority over their identity and place in society. Focusing on the aesthetics, the language, and the performativity of Hip Hop, this book pays attention to the life stance, the philosophy, and the spiritual beliefs of Australian Indigenous Hip Hop artists as ‘glocal’ producers and consumers. With Hip Hop as its main point of analysis, the author investigates, interrogates, and challenges categories and preconceived ideas about the critical notions of authenticity, ‘Indigenous’ and dominant values, spiritual practices, and political activism. Maintaining the emphasis on the importance of adopting decolonizing research strategies, the author utilises qualitative and ethnographic methods of data collection, such as semi-structured interviews, informal conversations, participant observation, and fieldwork notes. Collaborators and participants shed light on some of the dynamics underlying their musical decisions and their view within discussions on representations of ‘Indigenous identity and politics’. Looking at the Indigenous rappers’ local and global aspirations, this study shows that, by counteracting hegemonic narratives through their unique stories, Indigenous rappers have utilised Hip Hop as an expressive means to empower themselves and their audiences, entertain, and revive their Elders’ culture in ways that are contextual to the society they live in

    ATLien' hip hop aesthetics: an analysis of popular hip hop songs produced in Atlanta, Georgia, 2006

    The purpose of this research was to investigate whether or not geography impacts the aesthetic themes of popular hip hop songs. This study was based on the premise that hip hop music is directly linked to the local culture in which it is created and that those culture differences are reflected in hip hop aesthetic variances. A content analysis approach was used to analyze the selected hip hop songs. Five aesthetic themes of popular Atlanta hip hop music were identified. The researcher found that three of the aesthetic themes reinforced current mainstream hip hop aesthetic themes and two of the aesthetic themes emerged as alternatives to current mainstream hip hop aesthetics.The conclusion indicated that hip hop aesthetics are influenced by its geographical location. Regional location does not completely destroy primary hip hop aesthetics; however, it does add to the aesthetic definition of the hip hop genre

    De ecologische kwaliteit van het Markermeer is de laatste decennia sterk achteruit gegaan. De oorzaak hiervan is dat door de afsluiting van het Markermeer met de Houtribdijk een ondiep meer is ontstaan met een bodem van klei waarin een dynamische sliblaag aanwezig is. Al bij lage windsnelheden ontstaan golven die erosie van deze sliblaag veroorzaken. De slibconcentratie in het water is hoog, waardoor het water troebel is en er nog maar weinig waterplanten in het Markermeer groeien. Dit heeft nadelige gevolgen voor de rest van het ecosysteem van het Markermeer. Dit afstudeeronderzoek richt zich op een luwtemaatregel in het Hoornse Hop. De lokale effecten op golven en stroming in het Hoornse Hop wordt onderzocht. De studie is gericht op een damwand als lijnvormige luwtemaatregel voor de kust van Noord-Holland. Hierbij wordt de effectiviteit van verschillende varianten onderzocht. De hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek is: “Op welke manier kunnen lijnvormige luwtestructuren langs de Noord-Hollandse kust de golven en stroming in het Hoornse Hop zodanig beïnvloeden, dat daarmee een bijdrage wordt geleverd aan het oplossen van het slibprobleem van het Markermeer?” Om de lokale effecten van de luwtemaatregel in het Hoornse Hop te onderzoeken, is een hydrodynamisch model van het Markermeer opgezet in Delft3D. Het model simuleert de golven en stroming die door de wind worden opgewekt en berekent hiermee de bodemschuifspanning die optreedt in het Hoornse Hop. Hiermee worden vervolgens gebieden bepaald waar erosie van de sliblaag door de luwtemaatregel wordt voorkomen. In dit onderzoek zijn een aantal varianten ontwikkeld met een verschillende ligging en vormgeving, waarbij de effectiviteit in het reduceren van de golfhoogte en het afbuigen van stroming is onderzocht. Als zoekgebieden voor de luwtemaatregel zijn drie gebieden langs de kust van Noord-Holland, tussen Hoorn en Edam, aangewezen. Uit dit onderzoek kan worden geconcludeerd dat lijnvormige luwtestructuren in het Hoornse Hop een bijdrage kunnen leveren aan het oplossen van het slibprobleem van het Markermeer. De aanleghoogte is hierbij een belangrijke ontwerpparameter, die groot genoeg moet worden gekozen om transmissie van golfenergie over de luwtestructuur te voorkomen. Daarnaast dient de ligging van de luwtestructuur bij te dragen aan afbuiging van stroming naar het Markermeer. Hiermee wordt instroom van slibrijk water achter de structuur naar het luwe gebied beperkt. Om dit te bereiken dient de luwtestructuur zich voldoende ver uit te strekken richting de kust van Noord-Holland.     No-hop: In-network Distributed Hash Tables

    We make a case for a distributed hash table lookup in the network data plane. We argue that the lookup time performance of distributed hash tables can be further improved via an in-network data plane implementation. To this end, we introduce No-hop, an in-network distributed hash table implementation, which leverages the data plane programmability at line rate gained from P4. Our initial results of transporting distributed hash table logic from hosts' user space to the fast path of switches in the network data plane are promising. We show that No-hop improves the performance of locating the responsible host and maintains the properties of distributed hash tables while outperforming two baselines.     Hip Hop Narrative

    abstract: "Hip Hop Narrative" is a creative project that interviews 20 undergraduate Arizona State University students, ranging in races, ages, grades, majors, and hometowns. The project is comprised of two elements: profiles plus headshots of each student, along with a video compilation. The profile interview questions were meant to uncover why undergraduate Arizona State University students listen to hip hop; more specifically, what they listen for in a beat, if they notice the lyrics, and if hip hop affects their lifestyle. For the video portion of the creative project, each student was asked to write what hip hop means to them in one word on a whiteboard and hold this word up; the goal of this activity was to challenge each student to concisely summarize a subject they frequently enjoy. Seven out of 20 respondents used the word "expression" to describe hip hop in one word. This project also exhibited interviewee's personality through responses and content. Although the interview questions stayed the same, each student responded differently. The profiles captured the essence, passion, and rawness behind the student's opinions of hip hop. The interviewed ranged from five to 20 minutes, with each one sharing a unique perspective of how hip hop has impacted them personally. This project did not have a hypothesis prior to execution. However, once the project was completed, five observations of general consensus were made about language, gender, the use of the N-word, beats, and lifestyle. Respondents did not find that hip hop language offended them enough to stop listening to the genre. Both female and male respondents were not offended by gender roles in hip hop. There were mixed opinions regarding the use of the N-word in hip hop songs. Hip hop did affect the way student's behave, dress, and talk, with the exception of a few students

    Energy-aware Wireless Multi-hop Networks

    Wireless networks have provided us a variety of services which facilitate communication between people beyond the physical boundaries. Mobile telephony, mobile Internet and high-deffnition video calls are examples of services supported by modern networks nowadays. Beyond this, enhancements in processing capabilities of electronic devices coupled with advances in wireless communication have resulted in the emergence of devices which have high processing and communication capabilities. Small devices that we carry or miniaturized devices embedded in our surroundings can execute sophisticated communication protocols. This allows them to form distributed networks in which nodes collaboratively offer services without the need for pre-established expensive infrastructures. Such networks are known as wireless multi-hop networks, where instead of powerful base stations, multi-hop communication connects all the devices that are outside the transmission range of each other. In wireless multi-hop networks, each device may act as a router which relays packets on behalf of other devices. Ad hoc communication between laptops in a conference hall, multi-hop communication between personal devices at home, and collaborative communication between sensors distributed over a large area are example scenarios of multi-hop communication in wireless networks. This dissertation addresses the design of energy-aware wireless multi-hop networks, where energy is the key element in the design and analysis. Wireless multi-hop networks must be energy-aware for two reasons. First, devices in these networks often run on batteries. Thus, reducing energy consumption can save scarce battery energy of devices and extend the autonomy of systems that are composed of such devices. Second, vast deployment of these easy-to-establish networks can excessively increase energy consumption in the ICT sector. As a matter of fact, energy-efficient and energy-aware communication protocols and mechanisms not only extend the operational lifetime of devices but also reduce the environmental impacts of these networks. The novelty of this dissertation is the proposal of a suite of new protocols which together form a platform for energy-aware and energy-efficient communication in wireless multi-hop networks. The proposed platform scans different layers of the communication stack taking into account cross-layer dependency between them from an energy-efficiency point of view. The energy efficiency across OSI Reference Architecture layers is addressed. Notably, from the physical layer (Layer 1) to the transport layer (Layer 4) is covered. For the physical layer, we propose cooperative signal transmission techniques based on the MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) technology to reduce the transmission power of nodes without sacrificing link reliability. For the data link layer, we propose a network topology control algorithm which specifies a neighbor discovery policy to keep the transmission power of nodes as low as required for network connectivity. For the network layer, we propose routing schemes for finding the most energy-efficient routes between any two nodes of the network taking into account the impact of the transmission control of the transport layer. Furthermore, we enhance these routing schemes with the capability to balance the traffic according to the available battery energy of nodes. We also analyze the expected duration that two nodes in a wireless multi-hop network with a random topology can communicate with each other (from the transport layer point of view) through intermediate nodes between them. The proposed schemes in this dissertation together make the communication stack in wireless multi-hop networks more energy-efficient leading to green wireless multi-hop networks. This work is of a fundamental and theoretical nature supported by simulations.
