    Dioxin deposition in the surroundings of a sintering plant

    The sector of sintering plants, in the European Union, is considered today one of the major potential contributors to the atmospheric release of dioxin and consequent depositions. The emissions of a plant depend on many factors: characteristics of the input, sintering process, prevention and removal of dioxin from the gaseous stream. The local impact of a plant depends also on the variability of release through diffused emissions, secondary emissions and conveyed gases, as each stream can be related to a different way of dilution into the atmosphere. The high variability of parameters that can affect the local impact from a sintering plant makes it interesting the adoption of deposimeters in order to understand the human exposure in the surroundings. The present paper refers to an Italian case-study whose deposition was measured using a deposimeter placed in a selected site. The obtained values are discussed taking into account seasonality and operativity of the plant

    This paper provides a critical analysis of some processes determining a release of pollutants into the atmosphere, from residual municipal solid waste. The reference context is the situation in the North-East region of Italy. The role of waste composition and the implications of the available technologies are examined as well. Then the processes governing the dispersion into the atmosphere are discussed. Finally the different processes, by which emissions may determine an increased risk for human health, as well as criteria to be adopted in order to minimize this impact, are discussed

    Perspectives of unconventional PCDD/F monitoring for a a steel making plant

    PCDD/F emissions from steel making plants are characterised by conveyed and diffused streams. As a consequence, the conventional approach based on the control of emissions at the stack could not be sufficient to guarantee an adequate environmental protection. The present paper focuses on the results of a recent multi-disciplinary study on a steel making plant located in the North of Italy in order to point out some control criteria based on unconventional monitoring.     Management of atmospheric pollutants from waste incineration processes: The case of Bozen

    The paper presents the case study of a waste incinerator located in a region rich of natural and environmental resources, and close to the city of Bozen, where about 100,000 inhabitants live. Local authorities paid special attention to the impact of the above plant on human health and surrounding environment. Indeed, among the measures adopted to control the emissions, in 2003 an automatic sampling system was specifically installed to monitor PCDD/F emission during the complete operation time of the plant. The continuous sampling system was coupled directly to aerosol spectrometers for the determination of fine and ultra-fine particles in the emissions of the plant. The measurement results suggest that the waste incineration plant of Bozen is not a significant source of PCDD/F, fine and ultra-fine particles. Immission measurements from other monitoring systems confirmed these results

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
