Monozygous triplets discordant for transient neonatal diabetes mellitus and for imprinting of the TNDM differentially methylated region

    No full text
Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM) is associated with paternal over-expression of an imprinted locus on chromosome 6q24, which contains one differentially methylated region (DMR); maternal demethylation at the DMR accounts for approximately 20% of cases. Here we report female monozygous triplets, two of whom have TNDM arising from loss of maternal methylation within the TNDM DM

Effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist treatment in boys with central precocious puberty: Final height results

Objective: The small number of boys present in most studies on final height (FH) after gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) treatment for central precocious puberty (CPP) offers difficulties in the evaluation of the effects of treatment on FH in males. Method. We therefore combined FH data from The Netherlands, Italy and France to study the effect of GnRHa treatment in a large group of 26 boys with CPP. Results: The mean chronological age at the start of treatment was 7.6 +/- 2.0 (SD) years, bone age (BA) was 11.0 +/- 2.1 years. All boys were treated with depot formulations of the GnRHa triptorelin with established gonadal suppression for a mean treatment period of 4.7 +/- 2.1 years. FH was 172.9 +/- 6.6 cm. FH standard deviation score (SIDS) was -0.66 +/- 1.22, not significantly different from the target height SIDS of -0.23 +/- 0.75. FH-SDS was significantly lower in the subgroup of 12 patients with organic CPP compared to patients with idiopathic CPP (-1.34 +/- 1.06 vs. -0.08 +/- 1.06, respectively; p = 0.01), but no difference in height gain was observed. The mean estimated height gain, defined as the difference between predicted and actual adult height was 6.2 +/- 8.7 cm using the average tables of Bayley and Pinneau, and 0.3 +/- 8.6 cm using the BA advance adjusted tables. Regional differences in height gain were observed between the different countries, reflecting different local practices. Conclusion: We conclude that GnRHa treatment in boys results in a FH close to target height. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel

Surface screens for maintenance of side channels

    No full text
Floating surface screens could offer an attractive method for sediment management in the numerous side channels of the Dutch Room-for-the-River programme. The screens would remove undesired sedimentation or mitigate bank erosion without the heavy machinery that might disrupt the local ecosystem.Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineerin

Can you design self-organization? Providing affordable housing in Houthaven through building groups

    No full text
The main question is: how can affordable housing be provided by development through building groups? Though exact definitions are absent, A building group refers to a group of people, who often share lifestyle or ideology, pooling their resources to construct their houses. A pilot currently taking place in Houthaven has shown that building groups do not necessarily empower individuals, but can also benefit developers rebranded as building groups. By looking at examples of building groups from different periods, with different organizational structures and different building typologies, building groups that do construct affordable housing can be found. This project proposes a development strategy for Houthaven which uses a variety of methods support building groups in the creation of affordable housing. In working on the project, it became apparent that these methods can be classified into three groups: austerity, cutting out the middle men and cooperation. These used simultaneously in various elements of the strategy: in the urban, the process design and the block design. Furthermore, the strategy allows building groups to choose their own methods for creating affordable housing. Answers from the interviews show people want to use similar methods within their building groups. Large development locations, such as Houthaven, are so far missing in the self-build strategy of Amsterdam. As a pilot project, Houthaven should provide the example for developing large sites through building groups, so building groups can really affect the housing market of Amsterdam.Design as Politics - We the PeopleUrbanismArchitectur

The influence of surface screens on morphology in side channels

    No full text
Following from the programme Room for the River, side channels are created in the Netherlands. For their maintenance, alternatives to dredging vessels are needed because of nature development, such as surface screens, that use the flow itself to generate erosion. A field experiment using surface screens was executed at the small side channel in the Welsummerwaard along the river IJssel for this study. It turned out the screen has a positive effect by reducing the sedimentation in the channel. This effect is the largest when using a large angle of attack and a large penetration. Also, applying the screen at the bank instead of in the middle of the channel is profitable. Recommendations are given for Rijkswaterstaat to further develop the concept, including increasing the influence of the screen, for example by working with batteries of screens at each bank. Eventually, this concept could be used for the maintenance of all side channels in the Netherlands.Civil Engineering | Hydraulic Engineerin
