Fossil carotenoids and paleolimnology of meromictic Mahoney Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Vertical distribution of fossil carotenoids in a sediment core from meromictic Mahoney Lake was studied. Besides okenone and demethylated okenone, lutein and zeaxanthin and-carotene isomers were identified. No carotenoids typical for purple nonsulfur or green sulfur bacteria were detected. The ratio of zeaxanthin to lutein (above 1:1 in all samples) indicates a dominance of cyanobacteria over green algae in the phytoplankton assemblages of the past. Okenone, which is found exclusively in Chromatiaceae, was the dominating carotenoid in all sediment zones. The oldest sediment layers containing okenone were deposited 11 000 years ago. Between 9000 and 7000 and since 3000 years b.p., Chromatiaceae reached a considerable biomass in the lake. Vertical changes in okenone concentration were not related to changes of paleotemperatures. In contrast, okenone concentrations decreased during periods of volcanic ash input. During most of the lake history, however, mean okenone concentrations were positively correlated with sedimentation rates. This indicates that vertical changes of okenone concentration in the sediment reflect past changes of purple sulfur bacterial biomass in the lake. According to these results, the past limnology of Mahoney Lake resembled that of the present with a sulfide-containing monimolimnion and a well-developed population of okenone-bearing purple sulfur bacteria

Color poster with text, graphs, and map describing research conducted by Brooke Fahrenkrog and Adam Krieger, advised by J. Brian Mahoney, Robert L. Hooper, and Jill W. Ferguson.Extensive lead, silver, and zinc mining in the Coeur d'Alene River Valley, Idaho during the late 1800s-mid 1900s produced mine tailings that were reworked downstream by fluvial processes. This study focuses on oxidized sediments from river levees near Cataldo and Swan Lake.University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Approximating the Solution to Mixed Packing and Covering LPs in Parallel O˜(epsilon^{-3}) Time

We study the problem of approximately solving positive linear programs (LPs). This class of LPs models a wide range of fundamental problems in combinatorial optimization and operations research, such as many resource allocation problems, solving non-negative linear systems, computing tomography, single/multi commodity flows on graphs, etc. For the special cases of pure packing or pure covering LPs, recent result by Allen-Zhu and Orecchia [Allen/Zhu/Orecchia, SODA'15] gives O˜(1/(epsilon^3))-time parallel algorithm, which breaks the longstanding O˜(1/(epsilon^4)) running time bound by the seminal work of Luby and Nisan [Luby/Nisan, STOC'93]. We present new parallel algorithm with running time O˜(1/(epsilon^3)) for the more general mixed packing and covering LPs, which improves upon the O˜(1/(epsilon^4))-time algorithm of Young [Young, FOCS'01; Young, arXiv 2014]. Our work leverages the ideas from both the optimization oriented approach [Allen/Zhu/Orecchia, SODA'15; Wang/Mahoney/Mohan/Rao, arXiv 2015], as well as the more combinatorial approach with phases [Young, FOCS'01; Young, arXiv 2014]. In addition, our algorithm, when directly applied to pure packing or pure covering LPs, gives a improved running time of O˜(1/(epsilon^2))

One of the state's most notorious crimes, the "Mahoney Trunk Murder" occurred in Seattle in 1921. The victim was Kate Mooers, 72, an eccentric and wealthy woman who married for the third time to James E. Mahoney, 38, a convicted robber. After Kate's body was discovered in a trunk in Lake Union, Mahoney was indicted for first degree murder. The trial was big news nationally. It began on September 21, 1921, and ten days later the jury found Mahoney guilty. In this photo, Mahoney is on the right, handcuffed to a Seattle law enforcement official.Handwritten on sleeve: [Mahoney?] on Way to Court.
