Model of CMS Tracker
A full scale CMS tracker mock-up exposed temporarily in the hall of building 40. The purpose of the mock-up is to study the routing of services, assembly and installation. Test results of the streamer-tube system of the CHARM II neutrino detector
The CHARM II Collaboration is building a massive, fine-grained and low-density detector for the study of neutrino-electron scattering. Its target calorimeter consists of 441 detector planes with 155 232 plastic streamer tubes with digital readout of the wires and analog readout of external pickup strips. At the time of this report, about 25% of the calorimeter planes were equipped with electronics. Results on the performance of these tubes are presented as obtained with cosmic-rays and with electron and pion beams. We have also investigated the use of water vapour as an additive to the gas to suppress coating of the anode wires. The use of water would be of particular importance when using the tubes in a high-rate environment

The television work of Alfred Hitchcock
The thesis uses close textual analysis to study and evaluate the television work of Alfred Hitchcock. The corpus consists of the twenty shows personally directed by Hitchcock, including his appearances before and after those shows. In response to most previous writing, which tends to compare the programmes with Hitchcock’s films (often unfairly) the thesis emphasises them as products of television. Programmes are evaluated on the basis of their perceived success as television- if they harness conditions related to television production and integrate them with narrative themes or to create meaning. Hitchcock is considered to be the major creative force in each programme.
Chapter One provides a variety of important contexts including a brief history of US television of the 1950s, key literature on Hitchcock and analyses of contemporaneous programmes not directed by Hitchcock. The textual analysis chapters (2-8) consider aesthetic or thematic programme aspects. Chapter Two studies the various roles played by Hitchcock’s appearances as series host. Chapter Three considers the impact of censorship on programmes frequently dealing with murder, violence and insanity. Chapter Four analyses Hitchcock’s implementation of varieties of voice-over narration, a common device in short dramatic forms. Chapter Five studies Hitchcock’s use of point-of-view shots, particularly in relation to their role in the delivery of the narrative twist. Chapter Six considers the key Hitchcock theme of detachment from the world. Chapter Seven looks at moments from the programmes which demonstrate how aesthetic is influenced by television production conditions.
Hitchcock created a number of television masterpieces. His achievements in television are in many ways comparable in quality and consistency to his theatrical films. Even when considered in the context of other 1950s US anthology dramas, the Hitchcock-directed programmes are superior on many levels. Elements of his film style were highly suited to television production. Many of his greatest achievements embrace and harness television production conditions in their presentation strategies to create an integration of style and meaning
Investigation of design parameters for radiation hard silicon microstrip detectors
In the context of the development of radiation hard silicon microstrip detectors for the CMS Tracker, we have investigated the dependence of interstrip and backplane capacitance as well as depletion and breakdown voltage on the design parameters and substrate characteristics of the devices. Measurements have been made for strip pitches between 60 and 240 mu m and various strip implants and metal widths, using multi-geometry devices, fabricated on wafers of either or crystal orientation, of resistivities between 1 and 6 k Omega cm and of thicknesses between 300 and 410 mu m. The effect of irradiation on properties of devices has been studied with 24 GeV/c protons up to a fluence of 4.3*10/sup 14/ cm /sup -2/. (15 refs)
Test results of heavily irradiated Si detectors
A large use of silicon microstrip detectors is foreseen for the intermediate part of the CMS tracker. A specific research and development program has been carried out with the aim of finding design layouts and technological solutions for allowing silicon microstrip detectors to be reliably used on a high radiation level environment. As a result of this work single sided, AC-coupled, polysilicon biased, 300 mu m thick, p(+) on n substrate detectors were chosen. Irradiation tests have been performed on prototypes up to fluence 2 x 10(14) n/cm(2). The detector performances do not significantly change if the detectors are biased well above the depletion voltage. S/N is reduced by less than 20%, still enough to insure a good efficiency and space resolution. Multiguard structures has been developed in order to reach high voltage operation (above 500 V). The CMS silicon microstrip detectors: Research and development
A large quantity of silicon microstrip detectors is foreseen to be used as part of the CMS tracker. A specific research and development program has been carried out with the aim of defining layouts and technological solutions suitable for the use of silicon detectors in high radiation environment. Results presented here summarise this work on many research areas such as techniques for device manufacturing, pre- and post-irradiation electrical characterization, silicon bulk defects analysis and simulations, system performance analytical calculations and simulations and test beam analysis. As a result of this work we have chosen to use single-sided, AC-coupled, poly silicon biased, 300 mu m thick, p(+) on n substrate detectors. We feel confident that these devices will match the required performances for the CMS tracker provided they can be operated at bias voltages as high as 500 V. Such high-voltage devices have been succesfully manufactured and we are now concentrating our efforts in enhancing yield and reliability. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
