Bernhard Dorn and the beginnings of Pashto lexicography
International audienceAt the end of the 18th century, William Jones, a British judge in India and one of the founding fathers of Indo-European linguistics, noted the affinity of Pashto to “Chaldaic”. Since then, researchers, explorers, missionaries, army servicemen, physicians and other Western travellers began a long discussion on the origin of Pashto (and the ethnic identity of the Pashtuns) and proposed various connections: Semitic (H. G. Raverty), Iranian (B. Dorn), Bactrian (F. Müller), Indo-Aryan (H. W. Bellew), Eastern Iranian (J. Darmesteter). Though Bernhard Dorn never visited Afghanistan, he was the first to demonstrate that Pashto is an Iranian language in a number of his publications dealing with grammar, literature and lexicography. This paper focuses on the fundamental contribution of Dorn to Pashto lexicography, mainly thanks to the glossary contained at the end of his Chrestomathy of the Pushtū or Afghan Language (St Petersburg, 1847). After presenting the work of Dorn’s predecessors on Pashto, this paper discusses his influence on subsequent lexicographers, in particular H. G. Raverty and H. W. Bellew, the authors of the two main Pashto dictionaries (published in 1860 and 1867 respectively). Through these works, the influence of Dorn reached and affected the dictionaries of the 20th and 21st centuries
Orr-Sherby-Dorn creep strengths of the refractory-metal alloys C-103, ASTAR-811C, W-5Re, and W-25Re
Available creep data for the refractory-metal alloys C-103 (Nb/10 percent Hf/1 percent Ti/0.7 percent Zr), ASTAR-811C (Ta/8 percent W/1 percent Re/0.7 percent Hf/0.025 percent C), W-5Re (W/5 percent Re), and W-25Re (W/25 percent Re) were correlated by the Orr-Sherby-Dorn method and extrapolated to 1 percent creep over 10 years. Useful life was specified to be 2 standard estimates of error below the mean surface through the data. Over the temperature range of 1200 to 1800 K, ASTAR-811C was found to be the strongest of these alloys. In particular, ASTAR-811C was found to have at 1800 K the same creep strength as W-25Re at 1420 K. The difference between these results and those of Horak and Booker likely devolves from the comparative lack of long-time data on tungsten alloys
