University–industry interaction and firms’ innovation performance: new evidence from the biopharmaceutical industry
This study examines the impact of university-industry (U-I) interaction on firms’ innovation performance in the biopharmaceutical industry, focusing on understanding the temporal relationship between co-publishing and innovation. Using a sample of Italian biopharmaceutical firms from 2000 to 2010, we explore whether collaborative research, specifically co-publishing between public and private research entities, influences firms’ likelihood of innovation and the intensity of their innovation activities. Our investigation sheds light on the temporal aspects of the knowledge generation process and its implications for firms’ innovation endeavours. It reveals an “anticipatory effect” of co-publishing on innovation outcomes. Our findings, corroborated by a set of robustness checks, detect that the influence of collaboration on innovation activities precedes the appearance of a joint publication, ruling out the hypothesis of “defensive publication” as a complementary part of a firm’s overall IP protection strategy pursued by biopharmaceutical firms
Production sophisticatedness and growth: Evidence from Italian provinces before and during the crisis, 1997-2013
In this article - following the methodology developed by Hausmann et al. (Hausmann, R., Hwang, R., Rodrik, D. (2007) What you export matters. Journal of Economic Growth, 12: 1-25) - we investigate the evolution of production sophisticatedness of Italian provinces in the period 1997-2013 and the importance of the degree of 'complexity' of the provincial production bundle for subsequent economic growth. The analysis at a sub-national level, NUTS3, allows us to identify the spatial structure of economic complexity and the patterns of converge/divergence in this important ingredient of economic performance. We find evidence of a convergence in provincial production complexity during the pre-crisis period. Besides, we highlight using panel estimates a significant role of product sophisticatedness as an engine of growth. The current crisis has halted this convergence process and has asymmetrically affected provincial areas, substantially increasing the heterogeneity of provincial trajectories, in particular in the least developed parts of the country
Complessità dell’export provinciale e performance economica

The effects of refugees’ camps on hosting areas: Social conflicts and economic growth
In this paper we study the effects of the establishment of refugees’ camps in Africa on the occurrence of protests and social conflicts by using geo-referenced panel data (2000–2014). We use 50x50 km cells as units of analysis and match data on the frequency of protests, armed conflicts and other organized violence events (based on GDELT and GED databases) with information on the location of camps contained in the UNHCR Camp Mapping Database. By using a counterfactual empirical strategy, we find that refugee camps significantly increase the occurrence of protests only in the initial period (2 years) while no statistically significant effect is detected in subsequent years. We interpret these findings as the asynchronous effect of two shocks associated with the presence of refugee camps: a sudden population shock which initially increases social tensions with the host-communities and a growth effect spurred by the increase in aggregate demand due to a public-spending shock and the progressive participation of refugees in the host socio-economic system. To support this hypothesis, we analyze the effect of hosting a camp on economic growth in the surrounding area (within 10 km from the camp). We find evidence that, on average, camps positively affect economic growth
Energy Efficiency and Productivity: A Worldwide Firm-level Analysis
This work aims to explore the relationship between energy efficiency and productivity using firm-level data. Although important to policymaking, very few academic studies analyze this relationship at the firm level. Taking advantage of the national representative World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) data, we contribute to the current literature by providing one of the most comprehensive firmlevel analyses to date in terms of geographical coverage. To this end, we apply a standard constant return to scale Cobb-Douglas production function expanded to energy efficiency. Our findings show a positive relationship between alternative measures of energy efficiency and firm-level productivity. This relationship holds, albeit with different magnitudes, for all industries and regional groups. This work provides further empirical support for the messages conveyed by international institutions regarding the positive relationship between environmental actions and f irm performance, thus supporting collective efforts to improve the private sector’s energy efficiency, including the implementation of Agenda 2030
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
