Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Investigation of model and control system design of three independent system in IC lab for educational purpose
Initially, the project is started with conducting design, implementation and testing for water pump with a pressure tank system. This system is a simulation prototype for a household application water system which consists of a pump, pressure tank and pressure switch. This project is constructed for the use inside the ICE laboratory. With the need for energy savings, this project is purposely designed for controlled water supply inlet. For instance, the system works by automatically switch on and off the pump depending on the pressure of the pressure tank, which gives a respective water flow in and out from the system. Thus, this system may reduce the use of a pump for the entire day, which may prolong the pump lifetime.
In the ICE laboratory, the pressure tank with pump is installed on a trolley so that it is easier to locate the system. This system consist of three main module which are heated water tank module, pressure tank with pump module and liquid flow control module. The heated water tank module as the water supply to the pressure tank. In this system, the water pump is pump in the water to the pressure tank when the pressure switch reading is lower than 30 psi and the water pump will stop pump the water when the pressure switch reaches 50 psi. Meanwhile, the liquid flow control module is use to control the output flowrate of water from the pressure tank into the storage tank inside the lab.
Next, the second system is the air-liquid heat exchanger. This system is typically found in the car’s front hood, which use for car cooling system. In other words, the air-liquid exchanger system simulates the process flow between the car radiators, fan radiator, water pump and a car engine that involved in the car cooling system. This system is used to run the hot coolant from the engine to the car radiator and push back the cold coolant from the radiator to the engine. This process helps to provide engine running at the ideal temperature and to avoid overheating to the car engine which may lead to engine broke down and also cause failure to the component and parts which located nearby or attach to the engine.
For that, the air-liquid exchanger system is designed and the prototype is implemented inside the ICE laboratory. This system consist of liquid temperature control module 1, liquid flow control module, air-liquid exchanger module and liquid temperature control module 2 which are used for heat up the water to mimic the hot engine condition, to control the flowrate of water, to cool down the water inside the radiator by controlling the speed of fan and to store the water from the radiator respectively.
The last system is an air mixing system, which consists of instruments such as heater, resistance temperature detector (RTD), valve, pressure gauge and differential pressure transmitter. This system mixes air from the hot and cold stream. The hot air comes from the compressed air in the heater to heat the air, and the cold air comes from the air supply which at the room temperature. This panel consists of some failure device which later may need troubleshoot, repair and replace for some of the components. All of the work done has to be recorded and documented well to provide proper identification of the main issue that causes the failure of the system
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Commissioning and implementing a PROFIBUS network in the Universal Water System
The Universal Water System (UWS) was built for instrumentation and control engineering students to design, implement and test different control schemes. The system has been primarily developed and designed by fourth year undergraduate and master’s students with the help of on-site technicians and electricians for installation of high voltage wiring, hardware equipment and IT related tasks. As the UWS is a learning tool that provides hands on experience with an industrial grade environment and equipment, improvement and maintenance of its functionality is a vital part of the on-going thesis projects.
The main objectives of this work are split into three major segments. The first was commissioning the UWS, which consisted of updating the system’s software, replacing faulty equipment and ensuring appropriate functionality of the plant’s hardware. Two PROFIBUS Decentralised Peripherals (DP) flowmeters had been purchased to replace two faulty positive displacement flowmeters in the system. Hence the second objective was implement a PROFIBUS DP communication network for the new devices. The last objective was to design, implement and test more advanced control schemes through Open Platform Communication for the newly upgraded plant.
With the project now complete, the UWS is operational with a fully functioning PROFIBUS DP communication network. The server computer’s operating system has been upgraded, while the Compact RIO’s firmware and the programming software has been updated to the latest version. Faulty equipment has been replaced and commissioned. Namely, two replacement flowmeters and an electric flow valve. A PROFIBUS DP network has been implemented to communicate with the two replacement flowmeters. An unexpected technical difficultly led to 5 variable speed drives being added to the PROFIBUS DP network. Additionally, the compact RIO’s code has been redesigned to improve efficiency, provide cyber-security, and to reduce the complexity of the client program.
Due to unforeseen circumstances and time constraints the time taken to commission the plant and implement PROFIBUS was far greater than expected; two of the three project objectives were completed, pushing the advanced control schemes and Open Platform Communication to future work. Overall, the main accomplishment of this thesis besides the project objectives, is that the system has been updated, refitted and ready for operation for the next thesis student; so they do not run into the tedious and painful issues found during this project
Pilot Plant Data Reconciliation Implementation
The Engineering Pilot plant at Murdoch University is one of the unique process facilities that currently exists in any universities in Australia. It provides an opportunity for Instrumentation and Control engineering students studying at Murdoch University to explore various control methods and strategies to extend their range of knowledge in this area with the aid of physical instruments and software provided in the pilot plant.
The purpose of this thesis project is to devise a strategy to improve the process measurements in the pilot plant through investigation of theory and implementation of Steady State Data Reconciliation and Online Dynamic Data reconciliation and to observe and testify if data reconciliation can improve process control performance with a more accurate set of measurements
This project has been divided into three different stages with the first stage being, the understanding of data reconciliation, understanding of DR using existing case studies, followed by the investigation of the physical implementation and foundation work of data reconciliation in the pilot plant, and finally the testing and conclusion as to whether or not data reconciliation can improve the process measurements and consequently the control results.
Results of the implementation of data reconciliation indicated the improvement of process measurements. Non-Linear Tank and Needle Tank have shown considerable measurement improvement with the implementation of data reconciliation on the measuring variables of both tanks. Flow rate in, flow rate out, and levels of both tanks were monitored and measured except the flow going into Non-linear Tank were estimated as there were no measuring device available for that particular variable.
Ball Mill Tank and Cyclone Underflow Tank were also investigated with a recycle stream, steady state data reconciliation have also been implemented at this process system and helps to improve a better understanding of data reconciliation applications.
Dynamic data reconciliation were also implemented at the Needle Tank in the pilot plant for case study investigation, the results obtained is of what was expected and proved that DDR can provide significant contribution in terms of improving process control performance of the process system in the future
Integration of MATLAB and LabVIEW with Aspen Plus Dynamics: Using control strategies for a High-fidelity distillation column
The energy intensive distillation process has become a widely discussed topic as industry attempts to minimise energy consumption. The implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) can aid in the reduction of plant energy consumption. However, the leading chemical and petroleum software packages Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS do not currently support MPC. This project successfully integrated both MATLAB and LabVIEW with Aspen Plus Dynamics (APD), which enables the implementation of MPC schemes. This integration was established using Microsoft’s ActiveX Technology. In order to implement MPC from within MATLAB and LabVIEW, their respective MPC toolboxes were explored; these toolboxes possess several major flaws in their functionality. In particular, neither have the ability to perform RGA analysis or determine the model of the plant through data-driven modelling. To overcome these drawbacks a MATLAB script was developed which determines the model of the plant from automatic step tests in Simulink. Once the communication was established, and toolboxes documented, a high-fidelity distillation column was constructed in Aspen Plus before being exported to APD. This plant model was developed as a reference to compare the effectiveness of the PI and MPC control schemes, employing the Integral of Time-Weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) performance criterion. MPC outperformed the PI control schemes in all but one scenario. On average the ITAE values were 1000% lower for MPC, due to its ability to quickly track the set point and avoid overshoot. Further research has been highlighted on a number of toolbox features and dynamic communication options. Importantly, the use of the integrated software packages can provide a number of benefits for students and personnel. By developing a dynamic template it will be possible to implement these ideas into university, laboratory and workplace training. This could increase confidence in predictive control schemes, operator plant knowledge and reduce unsafe plant operation
Modelling and optimising single and multiple effect evaporators by using Aspen Custom Modeler (ACM), Microsoft Excel and Matlab
The modelling, optimisation and control analyses of single and multiple effect evaporators using Aspen Custom Modeller (ACM) is carried out to develop programs in different software packages for both single and multiple effect evaporators from an example of double effect evaporator model equations written in ACM. To develop the programs, the developed model equations must be understood thoroughly.
The case study was taken from the example provided by ACM, which was part of the ASPEN software package. The example from ACM involves double effect evaporators and the procedure to concentrate glycol from a dilute aqueous solution of 3.5w% of a glycol. A simulation for both single and multiple effect evaporators is performed by using Microsoft Excel, Matlab and ACM. Both models perform a steady-state and optimisation simulation. To build the simulation, a study on the process model is necessarily required. The study will be carried out by using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Microsoft Excel is chosen to be the medium of study because the sequences of equations solved during performing the simulation is much easy to understand. The simulation will start with developing the steady-state model for a single effect evaporator. Once the single effect is tested, then the steady-state model for multiple effects is developed and tested. After that, the case study is continued with the phase of developing an optimisation simulation of a single effect evaporator. Subsequently, the optimisation of single effect evaporator is successfully tested, the case study continues with developing an optimisation for multiple effect evaporators.
The final phase is carried out to run a performance analysis between ‘FSolve’ function and ACM. Besides performance analysis, a sensitive analysis in both single and multiple effect evaporators is also being done by using ACM. The performance analysis proves the optimisation simulation in ‘FSolve’ has not much different from the optimisation simulation perform in the ACM and the sensitive analysis produce an expected result. With the performance and sensitive analysis results, the case study can conclude that the three software packages successfully simulated single and multiple effect evaporators. However, there is a plenty of room to make improvements in this case study
Functional Cooperativity of Enzymes of Phosphoinositide Conversion According to Synergistic Effects on Pectin Secretion in Tobacco Pollen Tubes
The Arabidopsis phosphoinositide kinases PI4K beta 1 and PIP5K5 have been implicated in the control of directional vesicle trafficking underlying polar tip growth in pollen tubes. PI4K beta 1 and PIP5K5 catalyze key consecutive steps of phosphoinositide conversion, and it appears obvious that phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate formed by PI4K beta 1 might act as a substrate for phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate formation by PIP5K5. However, this hypothesis has not been experimentally addressed and distinct localization patterns of PI4K beta 1, PIP5K5, and also PI-synthases (PIS) generating phosphatidylinositol suggest additional complexity. Here, the synergistic functionality of enzymes of phosphoinositide conversion was assessed. In tobacco and Arabidopsis pollen tubes, phosphoinositides influence the apical secretion of pectin, and increased pectin deposition results in characteristic morphological alterations. Catalytically active and dominant negative variants of PI4K beta 1 and PIP5K5 were systematically co-expressed in tobacco pollen tubes and the incidence of morphologies related to enhanced pectin secretion was evaluated. The data support a proposed functional interplay of PI4K beta 1 and PIP5K5 at the trans-Golgi network, mediating directional vesicle trafficking. Co-expression experiments additionally including PIS isoforms, PIS1 or PIS2, indicate that pectin secretion is synergistically mediated by PI4K beta 1 and PIP5K5 acting on PtdIns formed by PIS2 rather than PIS1. Possible ramifications for the preferential channeling of phosphoinositide intermediates between particular isoforms of PI pathway enzymes are discussed.German Research Foundation [He3424/1
