    A systematic literature review of store atmosphere in alternative retail commerce channels

    The importance of store atmospherics on consumers’ shopping behavior has been widely studied since the 1970s. Over the years, and with the development of technology, store atmosphere has changed form and shape in alternative retail commerce channels, such as brick-and-mortar, 2D and 3D online, mobile, and virtual and augmented reality. However, despite its importance, there is not a holistic analysis of the components and dimensions of store atmosphere in retailing. This research fills this gap by denoting integrated knowledge and outcomes in alternative commerce channels and developing a unifying integrative framework that includes the components, the antecedents, and the consequences of store atmosphere. We follow a systematic literature review approach to (1) review past research and directions, (2) develop a map of the components of store atmosphere in the last 45 years, (3) explicate 208 variables that are directly linked with store atmosphere, and (4) draw an integrative framework and present future research directions and managerial implications

    Ambidextrous organizations in the banking sector: an empirical verification of banks’ performance and conceptual development

    The aim of the research is to identify the relationship between organizational ambidexterity (OA) and firm performance, based on a large-scale empirical study incorporating 3883 commercial and investment banks across 28 European countries. In parallel, it seeks to investigate and comprehend the potential effects of exploration and exploitation on performance. Through the classification analysis method, it is found that banks with high return on equity are typified by the OA transformative determinants of having high structuring, high levels of research and development expenses and being highly procedural. The research further combines the primary research findings with meta-synthetic theoretical research and experts’ interviews to compile, reconcile and integrate existing notions into a comprehensive strategic internal management framework for ambidextrous organizations. The value and originality of the work stem from its specific contributions to OA knowledge and the fact that it is based on a contemporary large-scale data-set of enhanced reliability and validity. Its conceptual framework adds further value through the provision of a scientifically based platform for a more advanced understanding of OA and its systemic organizational application, and a solid foundation for further research. Moreover, the research transcribes the findings into explicit elucidations of executive worth for industry application

    Can social media improve stakeholder engagement and communication of Sustainable Development Goals? A cross-country analysis

    Social media, based on information and communication technologies (ICTs), work as new channels to exchange information among stakeholders and play role in improving stakeholder engagement. Considering this aspect, we investigated the characteristics of social media posts that result in higher stakeholder engagement in the Eu- ropean context, and we determined which of the 17 United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) result in greater stakeholder engagement. We apply chi-square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) method to categorize social media posts based on their engagement levels. We analyzed tweets that companies published in 2019 on Twitter that also publish sustainability reports on Global Reporting Initiative. The final sample is based on 3,045 tweets from 173 firms of different industries and countries. We found that tweet characteristics such as content type (SDGs), use of hashtags, existence of link, number of characters, industry type and country of a firm significantly influence stakeholder engagement rates. The most significant SGDs are partnerships for the goals, climate action, reduced inequalities, life below water, life on land, and gender equality. This is the first study which considers the communication of SDGs by firms through social media to determine which SDGs are considered most relevant and promote higher stakeholder engagement

    The Role of External Embeddedness and Knowledge Management as Antecedents of Ambidexterity and Performances in Italian SMEs

    Sourcing and leveraging knowledge from an external network is only half the battle for firms that would become more successful. In fact, the mere access and acquisition of the knowledge itself through embedded ties does not secure to perform exploration and exploitation activities, and consequently, to achieve better performance because knowledge has to be managed. Firms' knowledge management (KM) orientation may help in the process of knowledge acquisition, sharing, and transfer, consequently, improving firms' ambidexterity and competitiveness. Thus, this paper proposes that the KM plays a key role in determining the outcomes of firm's external embeddedness, i.e., the characteristics and ties of the external network, on the ambidexterity and performances of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). An empirical analysis has been developed by using structural equations modeling with data collected from CEOs in 119 Italian SMEs in the ceramic tile industry. Findings show that the KM plays a significant role in mediating the effects of the external embeddedness on the firm's ambidexterity that in turn enhances the performances of Italian SMEs in our sample. Based on our results, implications for academics and managers and future line of research are proposed

    Old, New and Third Wine Regions: a Consumer Perspective

    Wine businesses operate in a competitive environment, characterised by shifting consumer behavioural trends and the rise of new players (Third Region countries). An extensive theoretical research is initially performed, intending to examine the various aspects regarding wine consumer purchase behaviour. Subsequently, an empirical survey is performed, with the gathered data processed with both descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques. The empirical research evaluated the theoretically identified variables in the context of the new competitive conditions that characterise the wine-growing sector today. The research has identified five ‘macro-themes’ explaining the perception of the generic product ‘wine’; two different clusters of countries presenting homogeneities in terms of their consumers’ purchase attitudes; and three consumer-behaviour-defining elements implicitly linked to marketing and branding approaches. The research has identified trends which add to the comprehension of consumer behaviour and offer valuable guidance for the development and implementation of corresponding strategies in the wine business sector

    Disentangling the resiliency of international transportation systems under uncertainty by a novel multi-layer spherical fuzzy decision-making framework:Evidence from an emerging economy

    Although transportation systems play a critical role in the global socio-economic facets, they are acknowledged as vulnerable systems directly impacted by unexpected events, e.g., natural calamities, war, traffic accidents, terrorist attacks, and public health. In this respect, improving the resiliency of transportation systems under uncertainty is a controversial global challenge that this study could underpin. To do so, a systematic literature review (SLR) extracted a list of resiliency factors for resilient transportation systems. Next, a novel version of spherical fuzzy Delphi (SFD) screened factors, considering the case of Iran’s international maritime transportation system. Moreover, the causal network relationship of the finalised factors was analysed by a novel hybrid spherical fuzzy approach, including a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and the analytic network process (ANP). Later, the unexpected events that occurred after 2000 were investigated. The SLR deeply investigated 51 of the top relevant articles. As a result, 12 factors and 22 subfactors that affect transportation systems resiliency were extracted. Notably, the rest of the findings primarily apply to the Iranian context. By implementing the SFD, ten factors were screened for Iran’s international maritime transportation system and then analysed by SF-DEMATEL. After, the analysed factors were weighted by SFANP, where “recoverability” was selected as the most critical factor, and the “technological and communicational” factor was chosen as the least critical factor. Furthermore, the results provide a critical analysis of the policies adopted by Iran’s international maritime transportation system to enhance resiliency under disruptive events

    Keep dreaming: how personality traits affects the recognition and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities in the agritourism industry

    Purpose This paper analyses how entrepreneurs recognise and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities following a sustainable approach that respects the equilibrium among environmental, social and commercial purposes, and how their personality affects this process. The main personality traits focused in this study are narcissism, locus of control and sustainability orientation. Design/methodology/approach This single case study involves Essentia Dimora Rurale, a small agritourism business, located in Molise (Italy), characterised by a sustainable business model that generates value for the local environment, thus revitalising abandoned territories. Data are collected using qualitative and quantitative methods and are analysed using the Gioia methodology. Findings The Essentia Dimora Rurale's approach is rooted in the concept of sustainability and the development of tourism in the territory. The preservation of traditional values and the creation of a network allow the firm to prosper and survive. The personalities of the two sibling entrepreneurs fuel the process, and the authors show that each personality trait plays a different role in each phase of the firm's growth. Research limitations/implications From a theoretical point of view, the study contributes to entrepreneurial, sustainability and personality literature. However, using a single case study can represent a limit for the research. Practical implications Various practical implications are recognised concerning several stakeholders, such as the owners and the entities linked to the regional promotion and tourism sectors. Originality/value The novelty of the research relies on the importance of entrepreneur opportunity identification, particularly in sustainable firms. Moreover, the authors fill the literature gap investigating the impact of three personality traits in this process

    Reflections on Climate Resilient Tourism: Evidence for the EU ETS-2 and Voluntary Carbon Markets

    The chapter discusses transition risk for tourism, addressing its relation with the Environmental Kuznets Curve and overtourism. Transition risk emerges when an economic model moves from carbon-intensive to carbon–neutral activities with market, technological, regulation, and reputational connotations. The EU is adopting mitigation policies to reduce the physical risks of climate change and introduce regulation and reputation risk with the Emission Trading System 2. We used an Ordinary Least Squares with Heteroskedastic and Auto-Correlated Robust Standard errors over a cross-section of more than 6000 municipalities in Italy. The beds in structures per squared kilometer proxied tourism intensity. We found that tourism drives local emissions ceteris paribus, contributing to regulation and reputational risk
