Consciousness and Cognition. The Cognitive Phenomenology Debate

    Get PDF
According to a position which has dominated the theoretical landscape in the philosophy of mind until recently, only sensory states exhibit a characteristic phenomenal dimension, whereas cognitive states either utterly lack it, or inherit it from some of their accompanying sensory states. This position has recently been challenged by several scholars who have stressed the irreducibility of cognitive phenomenology to a merely sensory one. The aim of this introductory paper is to provide a general overview of the debate on cognitive phenomenology in order to give the reader a flavor of the richness of the themes that surround this area of investigation centered on the relationship between consciousness and cognition

An Adequacy Condition for the Interpretation of the Tractatus Ontology

    No full text

Wittgenstein and Frege on Proper Names and the Context Principle

    No full text
The paper discusses Frege's Context Principle and Wittgenstein's interpretation of it both in his Tractatus logico-philosophicus and in his Philosophical Investigations, against the background of recent discussions of contexualism. It focuses on the issue of proper names and argues that elememts of context sensitivity affect also the use of proper names. Wittgenstein's later philosophy is more hospitable to Frege's conception of the sense and reference of proper names, for which, however, no uniform semantic treatment is to be expected. Wittgenstein's suggestion that often we use proper names without a fixed meaning is brought to bear on the (variable) information required in specific episodes of communication to specify what or whom we mean to refer to

Orizzonti mantovani. Spunti e dinamiche paesaggistiche ne L'Illustrissimo di Alberto Cantoni

    Get PDF
In the literary production of Alberto Cantoni, short story writer and novelist between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novel L'Illustrissimo is highly important both because it is the last publication of the author, from Pomponesco, a small town a few kilometers south of Mantua, both because it summarizes in a single text the different nuances and different directions that his writing has taken over the course of his literary career, also due to a writing and processing time that embraces the entire span of years of his career itself. In the foreground, in addition to the numerous and brilliant characters, one of the protagonists is the Mantuan landscape which, not a simple background, becomes a true literary parameter which in different and significant ways affects the purposes and mechanisms of the novel
