Note sur l'utilisation du logiciel CROP-VGT appliqué aux images NDVI du capteur VEGETATION

    No full text
International audienceThis technical note describes the use of CROP-VGT software (elaborated by S. Griguolo, University of Venice, Itlay), applied to the automatic extraction of sub-images from NDVI temporal series of images of the African continent issued from SPOT-VEGETATION sensor. Python scripts have been produced to supervise the procedure and to facilitate the use of WINDISP software for further processing of time series of extracted NDVI images.

Applying directional filters to satellite imagery for the assessment of tropical cyclone impacts on atoll islands

International audienceThis paper highlights the major insights provided by directional filters using ENVIt software for detecting and mapping cyclone-generated accretional features and analyzing postcyclone sediment reworking. It relies on the study of the impacts of category 5 tropical cyclone Fantala (April 2016) on Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles Islands. Using directional filters first allowed the detecting and mapping of terrestrial (sediment sheets, sediment lobes) and intertidal (shingle and rubble tongues, sediment sheets, sandbars) depositional features. It also helped with highlighting spatial-temporal variations in the postcyclone reorganization of reef flat deposits. One year after the cyclone, along the rectilinear shoreline of elongate islands (i.e. North Island and South Island), massive reef-to-island sediment transfer had already caused the dismantling of cyclone-generated features and beach readjustment; however, in places, newly formed cyclone features exhibited limited dismantling. In contrast, at the island tips, the reworking of postcyclone sediment deposits was still ongoing, explaining still rather limited beach readjustment. The results advocate for the use of remote sensing techniques that complement fieldwork and multidate shoreline change assessment to promote more comprehensive analyses of tropical cyclones’ impacts

Impacts of category 5 tropical cyclone Fantala (April 2016) on Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles Islands, Indian Ocean

International audienceThis paper provides newinsights on the impacts of a category 5 tropical cyclone on Indian Ocean atoll reef islands.Using multi-date aerial imagery and field observations, the contribution of tropical cyclone Fantala to shorelineand island change, and to sediment production and transport, was assessed on Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles Islands. Results showthat the twolargest islands (N3km2) only suffered limited land loss (−1.19 to−8.35%)while smallislets lost 13.17 to 28.45% of their initial land area. Islands and islets exhibited contrasting responses dependingon their location, topography and vegetation type. Depending on islands, the retreat of the vegetation line occurredeither along all shorelines, or along ocean shoreline only. The structure (wooded vs. grassy) and origin(native vs. introduced) of the vegetation played a major role in island response. Five days after the cyclone, beach width and beach area were multiplied by 1.5 to 10, depending on the setting, and were interpreted asresulting from both sediment reworking and the supply of large amounts of fresh sediments by the reef outerslopes to the island system. Fourth months after the cyclone, extended sheets of loose sediments were still presenton the reef flat and in inter-islet channels and shallow lagoon waters, indicating continuing sediment transferto islands

Kedrovyi Sor: daily life in a Gulag camp during the Stalinist period, Oleg Azarov. Our knowledge of the Soviet concentration camp universe is beginning to be nourished by direct access to archives. The author, a young Russian scholar, has been able to work on a rich collection of documents concerning the camp of Kedrovyi Sor, in the Pečora bassin. Through his study of the camp's administrative structure, its financial operation and its economic activities, and through an analysis of the inmates and their living conditions, he provides, almost in the raw, a concrete and precise description of the daily functioning of a Stalinist camp from the early 1930s to the 1950s.Azarov Oleg, Laurent Natacha. Kedrovyi Sor : la vie quotidienne dans un camp du goulag à l'époque stalinienne. In: Vingtième Siècle, revue d'histoire, n°43, juillet-septembre 1994.
