Verse on front: "Soldier of the Red Army! Be steadfast in battle!/The Germans are using up their last strength/Rain blows harder on the hated foe!/To endure is to win." Handwritten message on reverse: May 22, 1943. "My dear Grandmother, I'm writing you a little bit to let you know that Im healthy and everything is fine with me. I am living and working as before. The weather is bad here, it's always raining. I finally received five months' wages. I sent Mama, Liza, and Klavka some money. And this time I gave myself some, otherwise I'd have run out and wouldn't have had enough for a shave. Klavusya is now writing, otherwise I haven't received any letters from you in a long time. Soon I will probably receive birthday cards from you. Already twenty-four! Time is flying. / Well, stay healthy, my dear, write to me, and have Papa write too. Kiss Grandfather, Stenka, and of course, Papa and Mama for me. Love, Your Vovka."Digital imageExhibited: "Letters from the Front: Jewish War Heroes," organized by the Center for Jewish History and the Blavatnik Family Foundation, 2005Part of an online exhibition "Letters from the Front: Jewish War Heroes," maintained by the Center for Jewish History at http://www.lettersfront.org

Postalgram sent from the western front by Vovka Volf of the Aviation Bombardment Regiment, First Air Army, to his grandmother L. P. [Lyuba Pavlovna?] Volf-Izrael in Molotov (Perm), July 1, 1943. Slogans on front: "For the honor of your wife, for the life of your children, for the happiness of our own homeland, for our fields and meadows -- Kill the enemy invader!" and "How good it is to fight the occupying enemy! And what did you do today to ensure his destruction?" Handwritten message on reverse: "Dear Grandmother, I am writing to you again after a short interval so that you don't get even the faintest thought that your big Vovka has forgotten about you, and so that you can bravely rip open a letter without waiting for Mama to arrive. I am healthy but I don't have any news. There was a small concert here on the 27th. I recited Mayakovsky. I must say that I was very happy with my mood or 'creative feeling' during the recitation. Directly from the stage I was unexpectedly forced to go carry our my direct duties, but the next day I got a lot of pleasant comments. / The summer is really lousy here. There haven't been any hot days yet, it rains often, and it's very cold at night. Letters don't arrive in good time from Klava. Yesterday, I received a letter from her dated May 25! That's the second letter for June. I'm waiting to get envelopes from you, since I have run out. / Be healthy, my dear and kiss Mamochka, Grandfather, and [?]. Hello to Olya and Kotya. Yours, Vovka."Digital imageExhibited: "Letters from the Front: Jewish War Heroes," organized by the Center for Jewish History and the Blavatnik Family Foundation, 2005Part of an online exhibition "Letters from the Front: Jewish War Heroes," maintained by the Center for Jewish History at http://www.lettersfront.org

This diploma thesis deals with a reconstruction of a visually exposed existing retaining wall with a goal to design a slope or a retaining wall that seamlessly fits into the surrounding and is made of indigenous materials and greenery. A laboratory and on-the-field soil analysis was performed and input data was used to check different types of retaining walls, cross-compare them and present acceptable solutions to investor

    Random Processes in Reliability Analysis

Title: Random Processes in Reliability Analysis Author: Kamil Chovanec Department: Department of Probability and Mathematical Statistics Supervisor: Doc. Petr Volf, CSc. Supervisor's e-mail address: [email protected] Abstract: The thesis is aimed at the reliability analysis with special em- phasis at the Aalen additive model. The result of hypothesis testing in the reliability analysis is often a process that converges to a Gaussian martingale under the null hypothesis. We can estimate the variance of the martingale using a uniformly consistent estimator. The result of this estimation is a new hypothesis about the process resulting from the original hypothesis. There are several ways to test for this hypothesis. The thesis presents some of these tests and compares their power for various models and sample sizes using Monte Carlo simulations. In a special case we derive a point that maximizes the asymptotic power of two of the tests. Keywords: Martingale, Aalen's additive model, hazard function

Název práce: Náhodné procesy v analýze spolehlivosti Autor: Kamil Chovanec Katedra: Katedra pravděpodobnosti a matematické statistiky Vedoucí diplomové práce: Doc. Klíčová slova: Martingal, Aalenův aditivní model, riziková funkce 1Title: Random Processes in Reliability Analysis Author: Kamil Chovanec Department: Department of Probability and Mathematical Statistics Supervisor: Doc. Anna Luňáková: One chapel, one poet: the story of Jiří Volf Abstract The aim of this thesis is to write a monograph of Jiří Volf, a previously unknown Czech poet and exile who died in Toulouse, France in 1993. It achieves this through the testimonies of his colleagues and friends, especially in the context of the cultural center La Chapelle in Toulouse, which is currently still working with Volf's legacy. Last but not least, this work presents the discovered poetic works of Volf, which it presents in Czech translation and with bibliographical data. The biographical, bibliographical and testimonial material treated here stimulates theoretical reflection on the genre of historiography in general, with a particular focus on the question of life- writing and what is called metabiography, which critically reflects on the possibility of writing biography. In relation to the life of the author under study, the thesis also comments on the concept of exile and related phenomena such as writing in a language other than one's mother tongue, the question of identity and nomadism. In its entirety, the work is a biography of a lost Czech poet, which also presents his literary work and a critical insight into the context of his life

Pomanjkljivosti in prednosti IT smo v tej nalogi raje razširili na SWOT analizo. Empirični del diplomske naloge ugotavlja resnično stanje česa?, načine uporabe, dostopnost in odnos slovenskih osnovnošolskih učiteljic in učiteljev angleščine kot tujega jezika (ATJ) do IT. Slušne, bralne in pisne spretnosti se v slovenskih osnovnih šolah poučuje največ s pomočjo IT. Summary The purpose of the thesis is to establish the current state of the matter in Slovene elementary EFL classrooms after the integration of Interactive white Boards (IWBs) has been a constant for some years now. Written sources offer numerous analyses and feedback of EFL teachers but we consider them mostly two dimensional. Advantages and disadvantages have in this thesis been expanded to a SWOT analysis. A strength is in this case something an IWB has to offer on its own like a function of underlining or that of saving the used materials. An opportunity is what we can achieve by using an IWB, like to raise motivation. A weakness of an IWB would be that it does not work if there is no power and a threat would be if it is used only for presentation purposes. The empirical part of this thesis establishes the real state of the matter, the ways IWBs are being used, accessibility and attitudes of Slovene elementary school EFL teachers towards the IWB use. We also checked how attached they still are to traditional boards (TBs) and to which extent these are still used. We found out that over a half of the113 surveyed elementary school EFL teachers in Slovenia still regularly use a TB. One or the other serves as an additional \u27screen\u27 and they are not ready to give the TBs up. Among those without regular access to an IWB, most of them decide not to use it at all. It is interesting that among those reporting a constant IWB access, they also report to use it mostly for explanations and introductions but also claim the teachers\u27 role changed significantly into a more facilitating than frontal. Listening, reading and writing skills are reported to be practiced most with a help of IWBs. The demographic factors were not pointing out enough for drawing any serous conclusionshowever, the 30-50 year old teachers report a bigger frequency of use. Psychological factors for the non-use in spite of accessibility point to fear of potential technical difficulties and the lack of the know-how of the use of software. Some teachers without IWB access even believe that they are being discriminated against. Therefore, for a successful integration a regular access and permanent education of EFL teachers is necessary

    Christianity and Violence

Professor Volf counters the claim that religion fosters violence and that the “resurgence of religiously legitimized violence” is a direct consequence of a “contemporary resurgence of religion.” Limiting himself to a case-study of Christianity, he argues that the cure to social violence “is not less religion, but, in a carefully qualified sense, more religion.” Professor Volf identifies and criticizes a number of influential arguments found in the work of several authors, including Mark Juergensmeyer, Maurice Bloch, Regina Schwartz and Jacques Derrida, which he believes erroneously link Christianity and violence. These arguments are organized around four general themes: religion, monotheism, creation, and new creation. At the heart of his thesis lies the distinction between ‘thin’ and thick’ religion. According to Professor Volf, ‘thick’ religion entails a stronger, more conscious commitment to a faith rooted in a concrete tradition, while ‘thin’ religion entails nothing more than a vague sense of religiosity “whose content is shaped by factors other than faith (such as national or economical interests).” Throughout the lecture, Professor Volf contends that although ‘thin’ Christian faith may potentially lead to violence, ‘thick’ Christian faith actually serves to create and sustain a culture of peace. In the conclusion of his Lecture, he offers some reflections on “why misconceptions about the violent character of Christian faith abound” in contemporary society
