3d optical profilometer analysis of the marginal gap of class ii restorations made with different materials for vital pulp therapy procedures
We considered Class II dental cavities in critical tooth areas concerned with vital pulp therapy, and evaluated the marginal gap after treatment with Biodentine and Geristore, and one composite after either etching and adhesive (V2) and after use of a self-etching system (iBond Universal). We measured the surface morphology at the marginal gap by optical profilometry, and carried out analysis of the 3D data according to a new effective definition of marginal gap. The defined quantity was assessed for statistical significance of the apparent differences. The largest gaps appeared for Geristore (first) and Biodentine (not significantly lower), whereas the gaps of the composite controls were both lower, the lowest being the two-step self-etched system with respect to the three-steps etched and adhesive system, yet without statistical significance. Obviously, there is still room for improvement of the vital pulp therapy restorative materials, as compared to the use of standard composite systems
Potential energy recovery by integrating an ORC in a biogas plant
An increasing interest is devoted to biogas plants as they might play a key role in the reduction of current fossil fuel consumption for power production. The main component of the plant is the anaerobic digester where the organic fraction of waste products is converted in a gas with high concentration of methane and carbon dioxide. This biogas is converted in power and heat in a cogeneration unit that may consist in a micro gas turbine or an internal combustion engine. A portion of the heat is used to keep the digester at a constant temperature as requested by the anaerobic digestion, the reaming is generally dissipated. An Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) can be adopted to increase thermal energy recovery and increase the power produced by the plant. This study focuses on the potential improvements of an anaerobic digestion plant when a commercial (ORC) is adopted as an additional thermal user to reduce the amount of dissipated heat and increase the power production. The study is based on an existing biogas plant operating in the town of Viareggio (Italy) which will be equipped with a 600kWe micro gas turbine. The integration of the two systems was studied in detail by investigating the plant modifications, which are necessary to reach high values of thermal energy recovery. A reference and a modified solution were simulated in AMESim by considering a yearlong period with actual ambient conditions. Three different commercial size for ORC (30, 40 and 50 kW) were considered to determine the most suitable from the thermodynamic and economic point of view. A sensitivity analysis on the sludge regenerator, which recovers part of the heat from the digestate to preheat the sludge entering in the plant, was carried out showing a strong increase in the ORC performance with the size of the sludge regenerator. The larger was the ORC size, the larger should be the sludge regenerator to increase system efficiency and avoid winter shutdown. The economic analysis showed that profitability index was maximum for the 30 kW ORC, due to the inefficiency of a larger size during winter, while the most remunerable solution was the 40 kW configuration, due to the larger amount of energy produced during the year
Fast Screening Method for Nitrogen Reduction Reaction (NRR) Electrocatalytic Activity with Rotating Ring-Disc Electrode (RRDE) Analysis in Alkaline Environment
The Haber-Bosch process for NH3 production leads to a considerable greenhouse gas release due to the remarkable use of fossil fuels. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in developing alternative and environmental friendly approaches. Among the possible solutions, the electrocatalytic conversion of N2 has recently gained significant attention; on the other hand, not only scientific but also important technical aspects remain fundamental issues to be clarified. Particularly relevant is the need to improve the analytical protocols to ascertain that any detected NH3 is actually produced from N2 rather than from any external contaminations or partial decomposition of the catalyst itself. Here, a rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE) setup is used for the first time to study the N2 electroreduction process with the aim to recognize the product species formed at the disc and detected at the ring electrodes, respectively. We demonstrated that this experimental approach is effective to discern also a low-level ammonium concentration through monitoring the ammonia oxidation peak at the ring electrode for a fast and preliminary electrocatalytic performance evaluation and to prevent false positives. The versatility of the RRDE method employed as a fingerprint of new electrocatalyst candidates could allow to reserve time and cost
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
