The lipase, Novozyme®-435, exclusively deacetylates the 5-O-acetyl over 4-C-acetyloxymethyl group of almost identical reactivity in 5-O-acetyl-4-C-acetyloxymethyl-3-azido-3-deoxy-1,2-O-isopropylidene-?-D-ribofuranose that led to the development of first and efficient synthesis of 3?-azido-/3?-amino-C-4?-spiro-oxetanoribonucleosides T, U, C and A in 20–24% overall yields. The X-ray study on the compound obtained by tosylation of lipase-mediated monodeacetylated product unambiguously confirmed the point of diastereoselective monodeacetylation on diacetoxy-azido-ribofuranose derivative. The capability of Novozyme®-435 for selective deacylation of 5-O-acetyl group in 5-O-acetyl-4-C-acetyloxymethyl-3-O-benzyl-1,2-O-isopropylidene-?-D-ribofuranose recently discovered by us has been successfully used for the synthesis of C-4?-spiro-oxetanoribonucleosides A and C in good yields. These results clearly indicate that the broader substrate specificity and highly selective capability of Novozyme®-435 for carrying out acetylation/deacetylation reactions can be utilized for the development of environment friendly selective methodologies in organic synthesis

Ultra-High Performance of Nano-Engineered Graphene-Based Natural Jute Fiber Composites

    No full text
Natural fibers composites are considered as sustainable alternative to synthetic composites due to their environmental and economic benefits. However, they suffer from poor mechanical and interfacial properties due to a random fiber orientation and weak fiber-matrix interface. Here we report nano-engineered graphene-based natural jute fiber preforms with a new fiber architecture (NFA) which significantly improves their mechanical properties and performances. Our graphene-based NFA of jute fiber perform enhances Young modulus of jute-epoxy composites by ~324% and tensile strength by ~110% more than untreated jute fiber composites, by arranging fibers in parallel direction through individualisation and nano surface engineering with graphene derivatives. This could potentially lead to manufacturing of high performance natural alternatives to synthetic composites in various stiffness driven high performance applications

Graphene-Based Surface Heater for De-Icing Applications

Graphene-based de-icing composites are of great interest due to incredible thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of graphene. Moreover, current technologies possess a number of challenges such as expensive, high power consumption, limited life time and adding extra weight to the composite. Here, we report a scalable process of making highly conductive graphene-based (coated) glass fibre rovings for de-icing application. We also use a scalable process of making graphene-based conductive ink by microfluidic exfoliation technique. The glass fibre roving is then coated with graphene-based conductive inks using a dip-dry-cure technique which could potentially be scaled up into an industrial manufacturing unit. The graphene-coated glass roving demonstrates low resistances (~1.7 Ω/cm) and can heat up rapidly to a required temperature using a relatively lower voltage. We integrate these graphene-coated glass rovings into a vacuum infused epoxy-glass fabric composite and demonstrate the potential use of as prepared graphene-based composite for de-icing application

Modified BG Prasad Socio-economic Classification, Update - 2019

    No full text
Modified BG Prasad socioeconomic scale has been in use for determining the socio-economic status of study subjects in community-based health studies in India since 1961.It is an income-based scale and, therefore, constant update is required to take inflation and depreciation of rupee into account. For industrial workers (IW), the consumer price index (CPI) is used to calculate updated income categories at any given point of time, viz Jan 2019. These details of the calculations involved will help many researchers to calculate specific income categories for their ongoing and prospective research work in current calendar year. On the Department of Labour website (www.labourbureaunew.gov.in), state-specific CPI values are also available and should be used to determine more accurate income categories

Natural fibre composites are attracting significant interest due to their potential for replacing synthetic composites at lower cost with improved environmental sustainability. However, natural fibre composites suffer from poor mechanical and interfacial properties. Here we report coating of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene flakes (G) onto natural jute fibres in order to improve mechanical and interfacial properties. The coating of graphene materials onto jute fibres enhanced interfacial shear strength by ~236% and tensile strength by ~96% more than untreated fibres by forming either bonding (GO) or mechanical inter-locking (G) between fibres and graphene-based flakes. This could lead to manufacturing of high performance and environmental friendly natural fibre composites that can potentially replace synthetic composites in numerous applications such as the automotive industry, naval vessels, household products and even in the aerospace industry

Transmisi Memori dan Wacana Rekonsiliasi dalam Cerpen “Perempuan Sinting Di Dapur” Karya Ugoran Prasad: Kajian Postmemory

    No full text
This study aims to explain the structure of memory transmission in the short story "Perempuan Sinting di Dapur" by Ugoran Prasad and the reconciliation discourse offered by the author. Overall, this short story raised the 1965 Event in Indonesia. Ugoran Prasad tried to discuss the impact caused by the incident, both in terms of the perpetrators and victims. The theory used is the postmemory theory developed by Marianne Hirsch. The results of this study indicate that the structure of memory transmission in short stories is mediated by behavior and narratives, both from the perspective of victims and perpetrators. Both of these parties turned out to be equally save the deep trauma that was carried throughout his life. Then, through this short story, Ugoran Prasad presented a discourse of reconciliation to those who had a traumatic impact on the 1965 event, both generations who were traumatized and post-generation.

Design Thinking as a strategy to inculcate Problem-based Learning (PBL) in undergraduate education across South Asian Universities

    No full text
The Bologna declaration states that, “successful learning and studying in higher education should involve students in deep learning”. However, a survey of faculty across institutes in Nepal and Bhutan highlights that the undergraduate students in engineering and management lack skills needed to be industry-ready.They face difficulty in getting employed after graduation and if placed, then struggle during their employment due to insufficient practical experience, lack of good communication skills and unawareness of larger socio-economic contexts. The Erasmus+ funded project, “Strengthening Problem-based learning in South Asian Universities”(PBL South Asia) is an endeavour to address these pressing concerns in education quality, employability and overall sustainable development of the region and to imbibe deep learning capabilities. Therefore, as an empirical study to clarify and in turn, inculcate PBL in South Asian undergraduate education, the young faculty of the inexperienced institutes from Nepal and Bhutan, alongside the students from the experienced institutes from India and Europe, were mentored by faculty and researchers from the latter to undertake multidisciplinary case studies. The strategy of ‘Design Thinking’ was employed to methodologically guide the cases and keep it consistently problem-based, i.e., the learning is driven by theproblem with no one correct solution. Results showed that the participants reflected improvement in problem-solving skills and increased motivation, apart from enhanced collaboration and improved communication ability. Based on these findings, further development of curricula to imbibe PBL in its existing courses and guidelines to train the trainers for implementation of the same, is currently in progress.Space & TypeDesign for Sustainabilit
