After Stalin's death, Soviet linguistics seemingly steered in a new direction, enthusiastically adopting mathematical methods within the upsurge of interest in machine translation. This fostered the acceptance of formal models disjointed from the rigid dictates of dialectical materialism and paved the way for the rediscovery of the scientific legacy of (post) structuralist Euroamerican schools. In the eyes of the protagonists of this epistemological change, linguistics seemed to be freed from the traditional methodological constraints imposed by philology and literature. This short-lived yet intense period, however, is characterized by the polyphonic coexistence of several ideas and personalities, whose research activity can be properly understood and evaluated only from a broader historical perspective, encompassing both earlier and later stages, thus substantially curtailing the explanatory power of historical and thematic periodization. The study aims at examining the salient charac..

"Syntactic Structures", published by Noam Chomsky in 1957, marked a new, if not revolutionary, stage in the development of Western linguistics. Its impact behind the Iron Curtain has by far received much less attention. The text was very soon translated into Russian, in a period of lively discussions on structuralism after the liquidation of Marrism by Stalin in 1950 and the revision of Stalinism in 1956. The paper discusses the general scenario of those years, showing how concrete and strategic needs, such as machine translation and the introduction of mathematical methods in linguistics, paved the way to a formal approach and favored the quite positive and ideologically neutral acceptance of Syntactic Structures among Soviet scholars

The articles in this volume deal with the transmission and textual criticism of the literature of Slavia Christiana. The essays presented here focus on a small selection of Old Church Slavonic works, which are representative of some of the main literary genres of the 9-11th centuries (hagiography, hymnography, homiletics, etc.); they are concerned with both original and translated works composed mostly by anonymous authors. Each tradition is subjected to a text-critical study, starting from a brief history of previous research and the presentation of the manuscript tradition, moving on to the reconstruction, as far as it is possible, of its textual transmission in the time lapse between the composition of the work and its oldest evidence, and finally offering a hint to new perspectives in its investigation. A key question that emerges is the importance of the philological study of South and East Slavic Cyrillic and Croatian Glagolitic manuscripts dating from the 14th-16th centuries. This is a crucial point when it comes to the reconstruction of the literary repertoire of Slavia Christiana, given that only comparatively few texts are preserved in manuscripts dating to before the 14th century. These essays intend therefore to fill a gap in the field of the transmission of Old Church Slavonic texts, putting at the reader’s disposal the results of the main text-critical investigations in a limited number of pages; at the same time, they aim to present a pattern of analysis which might be fruitfully applied also to other works of the literature of Slavia Christiana

The impact of the Soviet Latinization Ideologies on the Bulgarian Debates of the Interwar Period: the Survey of the magazine «Bălgarska Kniga» (1930). In this article, I briefly discuss the topic of the debate concerning the appropriateness of adopting a Latin-based alphabet for the Bulgarian language, which emerged during the interwar period following the new linguistic and alphabetic policies of the Soviet Union. To this end, I analyze the post-imperial context that emerged at the end of the First World War, with reference to the literacy ideologies widespread in the broader Eurasian area, and examining the positions of intellectuals and experts that appeared in the survey conducted by the magazine Bălgarska Kniga in 1930. This investigation shows that Latinization was seen in an ambivalent way by Bulgarian experts, representing for some a modernization medium, while for others a risk of losing the millenary writing tradition of the country
