    Auerbach’s research, besides exploring the three main fields the author explicitly names (i.e. the succession of different and differently grounded forms of realism in literary fiction, the alternate splitting and melting of styles, the link between literary work and a Christian vision of the world), in various chapters of Mimesis, and particularly in chs. 2, 6, 12, 14 and 20, is also focused, albeit only implicitly, on the developments of a further distinctive feature in Western literature, which is the emergence of subjectivity in the representation of reality. Focusing mainly on the chapter on courtly romance (ch. 6) and on the Quijote (ch. 14), this essay will examine Auerbach’s interpreting work on texts that adopt, in different ways, a ‘subjective point of view’; this kind of interpretation is, in part, unexpectedly similar to the approach of other critics and theorists of literature contemporary to Auerbach, like Bachtin, Américo Castro and Viktor Šklovskij

    Several market studies have indicated that the roll-out of broadband has significant economic and social relevance. The investments in broadband infrastructures needed to realise these economic and social benefits are, however, high-risk. This is firstly caused by the fact that the roll-out of access networks is extremely costly and requires high initial investments. Moreover, the multidisciplinary environment and involvement of many actors with diverging objectives and interests cause high complexity. Moreover, the market for broadband is changing fast and continuously. Although broadband has been on the academic research agenda for quite some time, this has as yet not resulted in a structured insight into the decision-making process around the upgrading of broadband networks, seen from the perspective of private operators and taking into account the vast complexity of the surroundings in which this decision-making process takes place in. The objective of this research was to provide a unifying theory combining technical, economic, market-related and regulatory factors with regard to an evolutionary, flexible approach of network upgrading from a decision-maker perspective. The result of this research is a robust, explanatory, parsimonious model for the impact and outcomes of broadband roll-out. This model provides a certain degree of stability in this multidisciplinary, unpredictable and highly dynamic research field.Technology, Policy and Managemen

    Morphological characters and molecular sequence data of the plastid-encoded RUBISCO large subunit gen (rbcL) confirmed the first record of Kumanoa mahlacensis (S. Kumano & W.A. Bowden-Kerby) Entwisle, M.L. Vis, W.B. Chiasson, Necchi & A.R. Sherwood in Europe from a Spanish Mediterranean coastal wetland. The genus Kumanoa has a worldwide distribution and inhabits in both lotic and lentic habitats, but information about the ecological requirements of species is scarce. In this study, the morphology and ecology of Spanish material is described in order to gain a broader insight of the distribution of species from Mediterranean areas.El estudio de los caracteres morfológicos y las secuencias del gen plastidial (rbcL) que codifica la subunidad mayor de la enzima RUBISCO han confirmado la presencia de Kumanoa mahlacensis (S. Kumano & W.A. Bowden-Kerby) Entwisle, M.L. Vis, W.B. Chiasson, Necchi & A.R. Sherwood en Europa, en un marjal costero mediterráneo del levante español. El género Kumanoa presenta una distribución mundial y habita tanto en ambientes lóticos como leníticos; sin embargo existe poca información sobre los requerimientos ecológicos de esta especie.     Le specie del genere Batrachospermum mostrano una grande plasticità morfologica che causa spesso determinazioni specifiche errate. Sopraluoghi effettuati negli anni 2011-2013 in 22 fontanili del dominio Oglio-Mincio (Lombardia), distribuiti in un’area di soli 30x12 km, hanno rivelato la presenza di un numero sorprendentemente elevato di forme diverse di Batrachospermum. Le difficoltà incontrate nella loro determinazione hanno reso necessario sottoporre gli esemplari raccolti ad analisi molecolare, eseguita sequenziando 1282 bp del gene rbcL. L’analisi molecolare ha consentito l’attribuzione degli esemplari a 5 taxa diversi: B. gelatinosum (L.) DC, la specie più diffusa sul territorio italiano, B. boryanum Sirodot e B. atrum (Hudson) Harvey, due specie molto raramente citate in Italia, e B. arcuatum Kylin em. M.L. Vis et al. e B. gelatinosum f. permatoinvolucrum (M.L. Vis & Sheath) M.L. Vis et Sheath, due taxa nuovi per l’Italia

    Come è stato a più riprese osservato, il Joufroi de Poitiers, romanzo d’autore borgognone collocabile verso la metà del XIII secolo, si ispira molto da vicino alla figura di Guglielmo IX d’Aquitania, grande signore e primo trovatore di cui ci siano giunti i componimenti. Ma a quali materiali si ispira veramente l’autore del Joufroi? Alla vida provenzale conservata, o piuttosto a una più ampia biografia latina perduta, o ad altri testi ancora? La presente ricerca cercherà di mettere in luce quali siano state le effettive fonti del romanzo e di abbozzare un’ipotesi che spieghi le motivazioni di questi recuperi.As has been repeatedly noted, Joufroi de Poitiers, a novel written by a Burgundian author and composed around the middle of the thirteenth century, is based very closely on the figure of William IX of Aquitaine, great lord and first troubadour whose poems have been compiled. But what materials did truly inspire the author of Joufroi? The extant Provençal vida, or rather a lost broader Latin biography, or still other texts? This research will try to shed light on what were the actual sources of the novel and to outline a hypothesis that explains the motivations of these works

    Multifaceted characterization of a Lemanea fluviatilis population (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) from a glacial stream in the south-eastern Alps

    The aim of this study was a combined and multifaceted characterization (morphological, molecular, lipid, pigment, and ecological data) of a Lemanea (freshwater red alga) population from the south-eastern Alps, exploring its adaptive strategies to the montane habitat, (turbulent, very-cold glacial stream with extremely low-conductivity). Although the thalli were small (only up to 1 cm), the morphology was within the current circumscription of Lemanea fluviatilis. The molecular data placed this population within a clade of specimens identified as L. fluviatilis and L. fucina. This L. fluviatilis population was determined to possess lipid classes, especially phosphatidylcholine and monogalactosyldiacylglycerol with high unsaturation index (UI) and long acyl chains, which are typical adaptations for maintaining adequate membrane fluidity and consequently all the metabolic processes associated to the plasma membrane. The carotenoids profile revealed that, besides a /ß-carotene, there are significant amounts of zeaxanthin and lutein. This study further demonstrated that red algae are a rich source of important food web w-3 fatty acids and may play an important role in the diets of grazers. L. fluviatilis is reported from one of the highest elevations (2,170 m a.s.l.) known for the genus Lemanea and this species. This study confirms the presence of L. fluviatilis in a cold, unpolluted, turbulent stream and this type of stream may be its preferred habitat
