Summary : The role of vision in simple graphie movement direction.
This study examined the role of vision on syntactical organization of drawing production. In accordance with Meulenbroek and Thomassen's point of view (1991), a qualitative difference in the production of horizontals-verticals and obliques is postulated. Right-handed adults were required to copy geometrical figures composed of either three horizontals and verticals or three obliques, in the absence of visual control or under visuo-proprioceptive discordant conditions (mirror-drawing task). Data confirmed the importance of visual feedback on the production of horizontal and vertical directions. The dominance of the visual modality on proprioceptive modality was observed in conflictual situations. The results suggest the importance of visual control on the selection of privileged directions in graphic movements.

The role of visual information in the production of cursive letters in children and adults
The present experiment aims at studying the evolution with age of the role of visual information in the production of isolated cursive letters. Children aged 8, 9 and 10 year-old and adults were asked to write different cursive letters (a, o, l, m and p) under three experimental conditions: with a normal vision, under an opaque open box that prevented vision from the hand and the trace, or without any visual information. The partial or complete withdrawal of visual information had a much greater effect on the children’s performances than on those of adults. Only an increase of pressure was observed in adults following the removal of visual information, while children compensated for the absence of visual feedback by increasing movement length, movement velocity, and pressure. By contrast, they maintained movement duration constant throughout the conditions. However, a non monotone development with age of some of these kinematic parameters was revealed. Moreover, the effect of visual information withdrawal on movement parameters differed as a function of the type of letter produced. Globally, these results showed that children relied much more than adults on visual feedback when they wrote, even for the simple production of isolated letters.
Summary : The preservation in time of implicit learning effects in children and adolescents with mental retardation
The present study investigates the preservation in time of the effects of learning implicitly a new graphic behavior in children and adolescents with mild or moderate mental retardation (MR), matched with normally developing children. The children and adolescents with mild (IQ between 50 and 70) or moderate (IQ between 40 and 49) MR were aged between 7 and 16 years. They were placed in an implicit learning situation involving a circle drawing task. More precisely, the behavior studied was based on the modification of a graphic principle (the Start-Rotation Principle), which under normal conditions was naturally adopted by these children. The results showed that the induced behavioural modifications lasted for at least one hour after the training phase. The effect of delayed implicit learning did not vary as a function of IQ, age or etiology. The preservation in time of implicit learning was discussed in relation to retention interval stability, then in relation to Reber's postulate of robustness of implicit learning.

Understanding of tactile pictures in visual impaired children
The present PhD aims at understanding how Visual Impaired (VI) children process the tactile pictures that illustrate the tactile books specially designed for them. Our work is organized around two main axes of analysis. The first axis concentrates on the child who explores the tactile images, while the second axis focuses on the impact that the properties of these images can have on children’s haptic processing. Our researches included children presenting various degrees of visual impairment but without any associated disorders (in particular, without any cognitive delay), distinguishing early blind children from children with low vision. We also compared their performance with those of sighted children of similar ages. The results showed that children’s perceptive experience, varying according to their degree of visual handicap, strongly impacted their understanding of the tactually explored pictures. Their capacities of conceptualization (access to the perceptive and semantic dimensions of the pictures) were different, just like their movements of exploration carried out to attain a good understanding of the images. We also showed that some properties of the children’s explorations (duration, quantity of exploration, space apprehension) were directly related to the way the children interpreted what was represented in the pictures. Again, these spatiotemporal features varied as a function of the degree of visual handicap. From a fundamental point of view, we provided interesting information concerning the specificities of the haptic perceptive system of the VI children. From an applied point of view, our work enabled to elaborate practical instructions relative to the design of tactile albums and educational advices concerning the education of touch to be proposed to these children
Maintaining information in Short-Term Memory between 2 and 6 years old of age : temporal forgetting and helping in maintaining the goal
Working memory is an essential component of thought that is highly involved in learning and academic achievement. However, it is rarely studied in preschoolers, mainly because of a lack of suitable paradigms. Therefore, this thesis investigated the functioning of working memory in children between 2 and 6 years. For this purpose, two original paradigms were used. They were designed to be close to game situations which should help young children to focus their attention on the task. Firstly it was shown that the recall performance decreased over time, even in the absence of an interfering task. Children of this age therefore use a passive maintenance, i.e. without spontaneously implementing any strategy of maintenance. Furthermore, the decline of the information was similar through age. For the first time, it has been demonstrated that the rate of information forgetting did not vary between 2 and 6. Finally, none of these two factors, i.e. implementation of a strategy of maintenance and change in the speed of forgetting can explain the increase in memory capacity between 2 and 6 years of age. Secondly, it has been shown that the intrinsic characteristics of the task could lead to improved recall performance, perhaps by inducing a strategy of maintenance. Particularly, the implementation of a motor activity, i.e. walking during the retention period, has enabled these young children to counteract to some extent the temporal decay of information. Then, the implementation of a motor activity, by directing the attention of young children to a visual cue related to the goal of the task, help them to maintain in memory the purpose of the task. Attentional resources could be harnessed to improve performance of recall, perhaps by implementing a retention strategy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Graphic directionality and handedness : a developmental and intercultural perspective
In the present work, we try to provide some understanding about the factors underlying the directional tendencies, by examining the impact of biomechanical constraints and cultural habits on directionality in graphic movements. French and Syrian subjects, children and adults, were compared in six experiments in order, to put in evidence the cognitive and psychomotor differences caused by the fact that the Eastern and Western cultures oppose on the directionality of writing and reading habits, and that the two hands are opposite in the directionality by adopting movements determined by biomechanical constraints. Likewise, this comparison allowed us to determine the relative strength of these two factors during development, when a conflict between the biomechanical constraints and cultural habits appears in the completion of a graphic task. The overall results show that the directionality can be considered as the product emerging from a complex interaction between these two types of influences. The writing habit is a determining factor when the task is performed with the right hand (dominant). But the cultural and educational factors can be modulated by the biomechanical factor when the subject uses the left hand (no dominant). This interaction varies by age of the subject
