Interview with Bob Alexander. Part 2
Gift of John Revitte. In the second of a two part oral history interview, liberal political activist Bob Alexander talks further about his time in the National Teacher Corp, his youth in Detroit, Michigan, and the influences in his life which served to make him a liberal activist. He talks about leafleting while still elementary school, associating with French radicals in Detroit, protests he was involved in, being shot at, and being confronted by an armed bar owner while hanging posters. He also talks about his political activity in southeast Michigan, including working for increased voter registration, joining the Human Rights Party, and running successful campaigns for HRP candidates for the Ann Arbor City Council. Alexander is interviewed by retired Michigan State University Labor Studies Professor John Revitte

ABSTRACT PART 1: TARGETING THE β-BARREL ASSEMBLY MACHINE (BAM): A SYNTHETIC APPROACH TO OVERCOME ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA by Alexander Vincent The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2025Under the Supervision of Professor Alan W. Schwabacher Antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacteria presents a significant challenge to global public health. This thesis explores two synthetic strategies aimed at developing innovative and unique therapeutic agents using different scaffolds, quinolones and benzodiazepines. The first approach targets the β-Barrel Assembly Machine (BAM), a vital multiprotein complex responsible for the proper assembly of outer membrane β-barrel proteins. By designing a synthetic molecule that mimics the key hydrogen-bonding interactions of an inhibitory peptide with the BamD subunit, this work seeks to overcome the limitations of peptide-based therapeutics—namely, rapid degradation and proteolytic susceptibility—thus offering a novel means to disable bacterial resistance mechanisms in Gram-negative bacteria. PART 2: APPLICATION OF THE BUCHWALD-HARTWIG AMINATION REACTION FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF FUNCTIONALIZED BENZODIAZEPINE DERIVATIVES by Alexander Vincent The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2025 Under the Supervision of Professor Alexander (Leggy) Arnold The second strategy leverages the Buchwald–Hartwig amination reaction to functionalize benzodiazepine scaffolds. This palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling method enables the incorporation of small, non-aromatic amines and amine salts into the benzodiazepine framework, facilitating precise modulation of properties such as solubility, bioavailability, and receptor binding affinity. Systematic optimization of reaction parameters, including ligand selection, temperature, solvent, and catalyst concentration, ensures high yield and selectivity in synthesizing these derivatives. Together, these complementary synthetic approaches broaden the chemical toolkit for combating antibiotic resistance and contribute to developing more selective and effective therapeutic agents.2027-06-0
Descriptions of plants in the St Vincent Botanic Gardens (abbreviated)
Part of a draft catalogue of the plants of St Vincent Botanic Gardens. Contains descriptions of plants from the St Vincent Botanic Gardens, mostly in Latin (with some localities in English), written by Alexander Anderson. Some of the descriptions are thought to relate to the 148 botanical drawings that can be found in MS/609.
The descriptions are arranged under the following headings:
- Commercial & Medicinal
- Esculent
- Medicinal
- In Oeconomy [Economy]
- Valuable woods
- Fruits
- Curious or Ornamenta

Evaluating beliefs
This dissertation examines some of ways of evaluating beliefs, relevant to epistemology and to metaphysics. Some problems in normative epistemology are solved by properly relating justified belief, rational belief, and knowledge. Chapter 1 uses this strategy to defend externalism about justified belief. Chapters 3 and 4 defend the view that knowledge is the epistemic standard we aim for our beliefs to meet. Chapter 2 investigates which beliefs are improper because formed in an objectionably circular way. The findings support the Moorean response to Brain-In-a-Vat skepticism, by rebutting the objection from ‘easy knowledge’. The theory of justified belief developed in chapter 1 underwrites the Moorean reply. Chapters 5 and 6 make a non-epistemic way of evaluating beliefs central to metaphysics. To understand relativity or vagueness in a subject-matter, we must hold that being true or false is not the metaphysically serious evaluation of how a belief answers to reality. Either verdict on a borderline case is ‘acceptable’ in the metaphysically serious sense. For a matter to be relative is for the ‘acceptability’ of affirming the proposition to vary between judges. Chapters 5 and 6 sketch an approach to metaphysics built from the notion of ‘metaphysically acceptable judgment’, with chapter 6 concentrating on vagueness, and chapter 5 focusing on relativism about knowledge. Chapter 5 argues that the lottery and preface puzzles manifest central features of our concept of knowledge (introduced in chapters 3 and 4). The proposed version of relativism about knowledge is the only theory to respect those features. The view of knowledge presented in chapter 5 is not an isolated metaphysical extravagance, as the same framework is needed for the right metaphysics of everything that’s vague (argued in chapter 6). It is worth noting that my solution to the lottery puzzle is metaphysical relativism about knowledge, but my rebuttal of Brain-In-a-Vat skepticism concerns epistemic circularity and belongs to normative epistemology. Much recent work incorrectly assumes that the two puzzles receive the same treatment.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Alexander Paul Vincent Jackso
