We report here the fabrication and the characterization of an ultra-compact optical source made of semiconductor material. It allows generating two optical modes that are separated by the frequency that is requested at the photodetector level. This source is composed of two DFB lasers constituting a dual-mode laser emitting in the 1.55µm wavelength range. The device has been fabricated at Alcatel-Thales III-VLab using a proprietary DFB technology and the work has been supported under the "IPHOBAC" European project. Several targets were fixed for this device: tunability of intermodal spacing up to 300GHz, optical linewidth close to the MHz as well as horizontal and vertical divergences around 10°. The first goal has been achieved by using two DFB structures with a 0.3nm difference in the grating pitch and tuning the drive current of each section. The second goal has been globally achieved by using a quantum well based active layer. A new version including quantum dot based active layer should answer positively to this target. Last objective was partially obtained by the design and the integration of a spot size converter. The divergence has been measured as 10°x17° (HxV). Concerning the vertical divergence, the target of 10° was not obtained mainly linked to the device structure and the limitations we fixed on the overall length of the device

In terms of performance, the ideal biosensor should have high sensitivity, low limits of detection, and extremely short analysis time. Label-free surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors naturally offer the shortest analysis time compared to other types of biosensors. On the other hand, the limits of detection of SPR biosensors are not the most impressive. The inherent sensitivity of SPR biosensors thus needs to be significantly improved to allow lower limits of detection. Several approaches for the enhancement of optical sensitivity of SPR biosensors in the “traditional” attenuated total reflection (ATR) Kretschmann configuration such as the use of bimetallic SPR film, long-range surface plasmons, and near-infrared operating wavelength have been investigated in this work. In addition, some “non traditional” configurations for SPR biosensors including grating-coupled planar optical waveguides and arrays of sub-wavelength structures have been theoretically studied. Novel graphene-based surface functionalization strategy with enhanced biorecognition sensitivity that can be applied to virtually any SPR structure has also been demonstrated

Plusieurs techniques de caractérisation (XRD, SEM, FIB-SEM, EDX, Raman, SIMS, Effet Hall, GDOES, UV-Vis, et IV) ont été utilisées pour étudier l'effet des conditions de dépôt sur les propriétés des couches minces ainsi que pour caractériser les cellules solaires finales dont le meilleur résultat obtenu sur l'efficacité est proche de 12%.Nowadays, and after more than four decades of research and development of the CIS based technology, a direct competition with silicon technology is still far from being won; however there exists some niche markets where the silicon technology cannot be used (flexible photovoltaic) or less favourable (BIPV). The current fabrication processes are still suffering from some drawbacks: (i) some of the used materials and/or techniques have a large environmental footprint (CBD-CdS/CBD-ZnSxO1-x), (ii) some developed alternatives are expensive (evaporated InxSy), (iii) the used techniques are not easily up scalable (evaporation) or based on the use of toxic atmospheres (Se based). This PhD work presents our strategy in moving towards a full sputtering process and in using only environmentally friendly materials. In this framework, we kept using standard material and process for the deposition of the back contact layer. We developed a new process for the deposition of the absorber layer which is based on pulsed DC-magnetron sputtering at room temperature from a single quaternary target without any additional selenium supply, followed by an annealing under inert atmosphere. We developed a room temperature sputtering process for the deposition of the ZnSxO1-x buffer layer. We also developed our appropriate pulsed DC and RF sputtering processes for the deposition of the window layer. Several characterisation techniques (XRD, SEM, FIB-SEM, EDX, Raman, SIMS, Hall Effect, GDOES, UV-Vis, and I-V) have been used to investigate the effect of deposition conditions on thin films properties as well as to characterize the final solar cells which best efficiency result is slightly under 12%

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Thin film photovoltaic cells based on CIGS and CZTS materials has been initiated in this work. Environmental and economic issues have been taken into account to define an original strategy. We aim to substitute all the toxic and rare materials by abundant and non-toxic materials. In order to simplify the fabrication process, we also decide to deposit all layers using sputtering technique. The molybdenum back contact has been developed on a soda lime glass (SLG) substrate, with adequate electrical properties and good adhesion to the substrate even after thermal treatments similar to those used during the absorber formation. We have verified the required sodium migration from the SLG substrate to the molybdenum surface. A bibliographic study has been done to evaluate a single-target sputtering method to form CIGS and CZTS films. CZTS thin film deposition from a single target has been studied, with unsatisfactory results. We finally suggest an original multi-target method. Then, a bibliographic study has been done to evaluate the relevance of a sputtered Zn(S,O) buffer layer to replace the CBD-CdS conventional buffer layer. A study of RF-sputtered AZO films has been carried out, but we didn’t obtain the required electrical conductivity. We finally study RF-sputtering of ITO films. We developed amorphous ITO thin films with excellent electrical and optical properties. We suggest using this material as the window layer of solar cells

Development and characterization of innovative boron doping solutions by PECVD : application to homojunction solar cells fabrication

This thesis focuses on two alternative boron emitter elaboration routes for n-type crystalline silicon solar cells in order to simplify fabrication processes on one hand, and to improve conversion efficiencies on the other hand. The first route, driven by industrial integration concern, proposes the use of PECVD-LF boron-doped dielectric layers (SiOx:B), annealed by thermal diffusion. Emitter parameters similar to those made by BCl3 gaseous diffusion are obtained on n-type substrates. The second approach, which is more exploratory, considers a boron-doped microcrystalline silicon layers (µc-Si:B) made by boron-doped amorphous silicon crystallization. The elaboration of this high temperature hetero-emitter targets higher open-circuit voltages than standard n-PERT cells.SiOx:B layers elaboration and structural properties study highlighted several phenomena occurring during diffusion annealing. Doping and passivation qualification of associated boron emitters showed good performances. The use of SiOx:B layers during a dopant codiffusion step led to industrial size (239 cm²) n-PERT solar cells fabrication according to two simplified processes (3 steps suppression) with, what is to our knowledge, the highest published efficiencies (20%) on the considered structure. On the other hand, µc-Si:B layers were developed and characterized. The electrical potential of associated hetero-emitters was assessed on symmetrical devices showing that iVoc higher than 700mV can be reached. Contacting on this new emitter was evaluated by metal screen-printing. However, to date, blistering issues limit emitter integration into solar cells

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
