Dependence on film thickness of guest-induced c perpendicular orientation in PPO films
For poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) films exhibiting nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases, c⊥ orientation (i.e., crystalline polymer chain axes being preferentially perpendicular to the film plane) is obtained by crystallization of amorphous films, as induced by sorption of suitable low-molecular-mass guest molecules. The occurrence of c⊥ orientation is relevant for applications of NC PPO films because it markedly increases film transparency as well as guest diffusivity. Surprisingly, we show that the known crystallization procedures lead to c⊥ oriented thick (50–300 μm) films and to unoriented thin (≤20 μm) films. This absence of crystalline phase orientation for thin films is rationalized by fast guest sorption kinetics, which avoid co-crystallization in confined spaces and hence inhibit formation of flat-on lamellae. For thick films exhibiting c⊥ orientation, sigmoid kinetics of guest sorption and of thickening of PPO films are observed, with inflection points associated with guest-induced film plasticization. Corresponding crystallization kinetics are linear with time and show that co-crystal growth is poorly affected by film plasticization. An additional relevant result of this study is the linear relationship between WAXD crystallinity index and DSC melting enthalpy, which allows evaluation of melting enthalpy of the NC α form of PPO (∆Hmo = 42 ± 2 J/g)

La stazione aeropollinica di Vignola MO2, in funzione dal Maggio 1989, è parte della Rete Italiana di Monitoraggio dal 1990 e della Rete Europea dal 1992. Fin dall'avvio, il monitoraggio è stato condotto in modo da combinare finalità di ricerca e di servizio pubblico. La stazione di monitoraggio MO2 identifica tutti i tipi pollinici più tre funghi su tutto l’anno. I dati costituiscono una serie storica di 15 anni utile per studi sulle variazioni quali-quantitative della flora pollinica aerodiffuse a Vignola e dintorni
Identification of tools for improving and supporting sustainability and innovation processes in the dairy supply chain
The sustainable development of livestock sector is one of the greatest challenges for next years.
Within the development of a sustainable food system, animal production plays a debated role, thus
its sustainable transition is particularly difficult and controversial. This transition is recognised as a
key element for the future development of the planet by the European Green Deal and the Italian
Recovery Plan. Strong efforts are currently being made to convert livestock farms to more sustainable
and technological management, but there is still a long way to go.
In the context of sustainability evaluation, several methods based on Life Cycle Thinking are being
developed with the aim of framing the three dimensions of sustainability (Environmental, Economical
and Social); interest in the application of this methods in agriculture has been increasing in recent
years due to the implications of this sector on climate change.
In the procedures tools nowadays used to assess the sustainability of farms, animal health and welfare
are usually neglected or not organically integrated.
In this context, the primary aim of the PhD project presented here was to assess the environmental
impact of dairy farms, incorporating an approach that considers animal health and welfare. This was
achieved using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method with a “cradle to factory gate” analysis.
Following an extensive literature review, an innovative and comprehensive LCA inventory was
developed to collect primary data from four dairy farms within the Parmigiano Reggiano PDO supply
chain involved in the research. This inventory included aspects such as animal health and welfare,
feeding, production, and management. The farms were monitored, and farmers were engaged through
questionnaires.
Upon completion of a more extensive farm sampling and data analysis, customized management
strategies for climate change mitigation will be identified and implemented for each farm involved in
the research
