Academic Anti-Semitism and the Austrian School: Vienna, 1918-1945

    No full text
The theme of academic anti-Semitism has been much discussed recently in histories of the interwar period of the University of Vienna, in particular its Faculty of Law and Policy Sciences. This paper complements these studies by focusing in this regard on the economics chairs at this faculty and, more generally, on the fate of the younger generation of the Austrian school of economics. After some introductory remarks the paper concentrates on three case studies: the neglect of Mises in all three appointments of economics chairs in the 1920s; the anti-Semitic overtones in the conflict between Hans Mayer and Othmar Spann, both professors for economics at the faculty; and on anti-Semitism as a determinant of success or failure in academia, and consequently of the emigration of Austrian economists. Finally, we have a short look at the development of economics at the University of Vienna during and after the Nazi regime. (author's abstract)Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Serie

Geburtenbarometer Vienna: Analysing fertility convergence between Vienna and Austria

Geburtenbarometer Vienna aims to provide an up-to-date monitoring of fertility in Vienna, based on a set of annual and quarterly indicators of fertility rates and regularly published summary reports. This paper gives an overview of the data, methods and indicators used and contrasts main results with the data for other Austrian regions and for the whole country. Throughout much of the 20th century, Vienna recorded fertility rates deep below those in other parts of Austria. Because fertility in Vienna differs markedly between Austrian-born and foreign-born women, our study looks at these fertility differentials and their influence on the overall fertility patterns for Vienna and Austria. Migrant women in Vienna not only had a rapidly increasing share on total births since the mid-1980s and thus contributed to a gradual increase in the absolute number of births in the city, but their higher fertility has also helped to push period fertility rates in Vienna towards the levels recorded in other regions of Austria. Our study brings to light the distinct population dynamics in Vienna, where high childlessness and low fertility are combined with a positive balance between births and deaths and sustained population growth and where the population trends are strongly influenced by the direct and indirect effects of migration.

    Mapping Heritage in Vienna

Vienna´s 1st municipal district is an area dense with built heritage. A public map created in Google Maps shows the location of heritage building protection. It combines open data provided by the City of Vienna and the Federal Monuments Authority. The map has two functions: first, the map holds information on the 669 individual buildings that are protected according to the Austrian Monuments Law, providing information on the individually protected buildings in five layers. Among these layers, one shows the location of these buildings without further discrimination, while another layer shows whether buildings are protected by legal presumption or by decree. Additional layers show building characteristics such as the number of storeys, original roofs and use. By clicking on a building in any layer, additional building information appears on the left-hand side of the browser window, including alternate addresses, year of construction and architect. The second function of the map is to show different legal protection areas, such as the UNESCO World Heritage site "Historic City Centre of Vienna" and the "Protected Zones" according to the Building Code for Vienna. Viewers can choose between three layers visualizing the core and buffer zones of the World Heritage site, protected zones and the ensemble "Vienna City Centre". By selecting multiple layers at once, viewers can see where areas overlap and buildings therefore enjoy triple legal protection, but can also instantly locate gaps where this is not the case. The map visualises the complex legal construct that protects the built heritage in Vienna. It allows viewers to easily identify areas with dense legal protection and in addition provides easily accessible information on listed buildings

The fact that Vienna is an attractive tourist destination, well known internationally is undeniable. With its imperial splendour and remarkable cultural image, Vienna has become, in the recent years, an attractive tourist destination, reaching in 2010 over 10.8 million overnights, far exceeding its own targets. The study presents the key elements of the Austrian capital new branding strategy from a synthetic-descriptive perspective and examines the vectors that generated its success. The paper evaluates both quantitative and qualitative effects that had a major impact on increasing visitors number and overnight stays, on increasing familiarity and preference for Vienna among the target-groups (tourists, investors). The benefits resulting after the branding campaign were not only material, Vienna earning also a fantastic reputation around the world, and creating itself an attractive and compelling image, as a unique tourist location through its peculiarity.Brand, city brand, brand strategies, tourism, advertising campaigns, strategic development.

Housing, and access to affordable housing, is key to creating a just, inclusive and sustainable city. For both future and current city-shapers there is much to learn from Vienna. The Viennese have long demonstrated how to deliver high-quality, innovative and sustainable affordable housing, resulting in the creation of one of the world’s most liveable and equitable cities. A product of an interdisciplinary and international joint course between TU Wien and UNSW Sydney, this book presents a collection of portraits of Viennese affordable housing projects. Each portrait offers insights into the design outcomes of each project, making this book an excellent introduction to better understand housing in Vienna
