    Vidy Bay hydrodynamics under typical meteorological conditions

    Vidy Bay (Lake Geneva, Switzerland) is the site of a sewage outfall, located 700 meters offshore at a depth of 30 meters. Estimates of water circulation in this area are required to assess the transport and fate of water quality components. Numerical simulations and field measurements were carried out to examine current patterns in this area. A commercial 3D finite-difference hydrodynamic model (Delft3D-FLOW) was used. The simulations, which incorporated a non-uniform grid system, sigma coordinates and high-resolution bathymetry, covered all of Lake Geneva. In addition to local stream and River Rhone inflows, detailed, spatially distributed lake-wide wind, temperature and humidity data were used as model boundary conditions. Several scenarios based on typical meteorological conditions were simulated to determine the water currents in the lake and, particularly, in Vidy Bay. Different patterns were found depending on the wind regimes and lake thermal structure. A Lagran-gian drifter experiment was conducted in the bay to capture current patterns and to measure local air and water temperature, as well as wind velocity. The modeling results and field data compared well. The results demonstrate that Vidy Bay displays high temporal and spatial variability due to the vari-able forcing and relatively rapid hydrodynamic response to changing conditions.ECOLLH

    Située à côté du bâtiment historique du théâtre de Vidy, à quelques pas des rives du lac Léman, une nouvelle salle entièrement en bois, baptisée Pavillon, a été dessinée par l’ar-chitecte Yves Weinand, directeur du laboratoire IBOIS de l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Elle se caractérise par une structure aux formes « origamiques » tout en plis et lignes brisées et remplace un ancien chapiteau installé au même emplacement. Dotée d’une scène au sol, d’une ouverture entre 14 et 19 mètres et équipée d’un gradin rétractable de 250 places, cette nouvelle salle confortable autant pour les artistes que pour les spectateurs est modulable et complémentaire des autres espaces du théâtre. Dialoguant avec le bâtiment de Max Bill construit pour l’exposition universelle de 1964 et conçu grâce à un transfert de technologies innovantes appliquées à la construction en bois, le Pavillon est ainsi à l’image de l’esprit qui anime le Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne : un lieu de création porté par son histoire pour inventer le théâtre d’aujourd’hui et de demain.IBOI

    Vidy Bay is located near Lausanne on the northern shore of Lake Geneva in an area where sewage outfalls and drinking water intakes are positioned. Local circulation patterns may control water quality aspects in this part of lake. Currents are mainly influenced by variable wind regimes and the lake’s thermal structure. Field experiments and numerical simulations were carried out to quantify the circulation patterns in this part of the lake. A set of Lagrangian drifters was used to capture current patterns and to measure air and water temperature and wind velocity in Vidy Bay. Current measurements were compared with simulations from a 3D hydrodynamic model (Delft3D-FLOW), covering all of Lake Geneva. Higher resolutions of bathymetry and grid mesh size were used for the Vidy Bay. Meteorological data for the model’s surface boundary conditions were provided by the high-resolution (2.2 km gridded) MeteoSwiss COSMO-2 model. Modeled currents compared well with the field data. The validated model was used to identify typical current patterns in the bay. Consistent with previous observations of the bay’s currents, the modeling results showed that Vidy currents are highly variable both spatially and temporally, although current patterns were found to be follow the forcing by the different wind regimes across the whole lake.ECOLLH

    Colloid characterization at the sediment-water interface of Vidy Bay, Lake Geneva

    Colloids play a critical role in the transport of particle-bound contaminants. Knowledge of colloids and their aggregates provides insight into contaminant transport and fate within a given aquatic environment. Here, colloids and aggregates at the sediment-water interface of Vidy Bay, Lake Geneva, Switzerland, were characterized with a combination of analytical techniques to understand their structure, size distribution, concentration, and stability (the potential for aggregation). Vidy Bay is known to be the most contaminated part of Lake Geneva, being influenced by the effluents of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Colloids were a heterogeneous mix of inorganic constituents (diatom fragments, quartz, clay, endogenic calcite, iron oxy-hydroxides) bridged together by rigid biopolymer strands or gels. The presence of rigid biopolymers was quite significant and they were typically found to have iron oxy-hydroxides embedded within their structure. Ion chromatographic data were comparable to previous values attained for the water column of Lake Geneva; however, single particle counting results indicated the presence of a nepheloid layer in Vidy Bay. In such, the stability of colloids was likely influenced by their proximity to the sediment-water interface. Zeta potential results inferred charge neutralization and destabilization of colloids and aggregates. Self-assembly of rigid biopolymers, along with cationic bridging between rigid biopolymers and inorganic constituents readily aggregated colloids. Taken together, colloids at the sediment water interface of Vidy Bay appeared to be unstable and to play a minor role in the transport of contaminants over long distances

    La découverte inattendue du théâtre gallo-romain de Lousonna-Vidy a mis en évidence des particularités notables, soulignant tout son intérêt. Elles permettent de soulever nombre de problématiques nouvelles comme l’influence d’une forme de monument importée sur la tradition locale du spectacle. C’est également l’occasion d’évoquer des thèmes non résolus de façon satisfaisante : la typologie des théâtres, les liens entre la forme du monument et les spectacles qui peuvent y être présentés. Abordés ici superficiellement, ils stimulent la poursuite de l’étude sur les monuments de spectacles

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
