Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Os herbicidas mais eficazes foram: fluazifop-butil, haloxifop-methyl e quizalofop-etyl nas doses de 0,65; 0,24 e 0,14 Kg/ha, respectivamenteThe present research was carried out at Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz and at Universidade Federal de Queiroz", in Piracicaba-SP de Mato Grosso do Sul, in Dourados-MS, from 1983 to 1986. Its aim was to study the effects of post-emergency herbicides of graminicide action in soybean The study focused: when to apply the products, their doses, species of grasses which were controled and the effects of the herbicides sethoxydim, diclofop-methyl, fluazifop-butil, haloxyfop-methyl, chlorazifop-propynil and quizalofop-ethyl. The observations were made in plants in the outdoors and in picked up suds studied through laboratory tests. To do so, experimental essays were develop in the field, in a greenhouse and in laboratories of analysis of seeds. After accomplishing the work, it was verified that the herbicides studies did not cause morphologic injuries, non did they alter the physiologic quality of the soybean seeds. The best time to apply the herbicides 20 to 25 days after planting the crop, that is, fifth to the sixth trefoid of the soybean. was from from the This time corresponds to that when most graminious have already spruted without having reached the staze of resistency to the chemical control of the tested products. Besides, it was allowed a residual action, in a pre-emergency basis, of some herbicides, such as haloxifop-methyl and chlorazifop- -propynil, keeping the soil free from weeds until it has been covered by the culture. The most effective herbicides were: fluazifop-butil, haloxyfop-methyl and quizalofop-ethyl in doses of 0,65, 0,24 and 0,14 kg/ha, respectivel

The sourgrass (Digitaria insularis) is a weed that has gained importance in the Brazilian agricultural scene recently, due to the natural difficulty to control this species of weed and the discovery of populations resistant to glyphosate. The objective of this work was to study the resistance levels of sourgrass populations in the states of Paraná and São Paulo, and to evaluate the control provided by herbicides applications associated or not with two 2,4-D formulations in perennial plants and after mechanical mowing. In the first experiment, sourgrass populations were collected in fifteen areas in the states of Paraná and São Paulo. Eight growing doses of glyphosate (0, 67.5, 135, 270, 540, 1080, 2160 and 4320 g a.a.ha-1) were applied in 5 replicates to obtain the dose response curve. The control data were submitted to the log-logistic nonlinear regression model to determine the parameters of the dose-response curves, after the resistance factor for each population was determined. In the second and third experiments, was evaluated the effectiveness of sourgrass control through 31 associations between herbicides glyphosate, 2,4-D dimethylamine, 2,4-D choline, haloxyfop, clethodim, glufosinate, in adult perennial plants and after mowing at 20cm. There is a scenario of evolution in the cases of sourgrass resistance to glyphosate herbicide in the states of São Paulo and Paraná. Most of the populations studied showed some resistance to glyphosate, but most (67%) low resistance. However, the observation of populations with very high resistance factors serves as an alert to the need of using integrated weed management, seeking to use good agricultural practices, so that populations that still have a low resistance level do not reach this high level. It is possible to affirm that the control of adult plants of sourgrass resistant to glyphosate is facilitated with the mechanical mowing, being able to reach results similar to the control of the non-cropped plants, with a sequential application less. There are several combinations of sequential applications and associations between glyphosate, haloxyfop, clethodim and glufosinate, in association or not with 2,4-D choline and 2,4-D dimethylamine, capable of providing superior control to 90% in sourgrass plants, mowed or not. Regardless of the treatment, some plants regrowth, where the intensity is important at the occasion of the sequential application. It is recommended that this parameter get observed with caution for correct decision making, especially in the case of mechanical mowing of the plants, prior to the application of herbicides. It was possible to observe that the new formulation of 2,4-D choline has similar behavior to 2,4-D dimethylamine in relation to possible antagonisms in combinations with graminicides. This indicates that prior knowledge serves as a good reference for use of the new formulation while new studies are developed

(Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Water hyacinth and the water lettuce are free floating species widely found in aquatic environment. If not properly managed these plants may cause undersirable effects as consequence of their great reproductive capacity. Independent experiments took place in Cosmopolis (SP). Such experiments aimed to study the behaviour of these plants when submited to the action of different rates of glufosinate-ammonium (0.8; 1.0; 1.2; 1.4 kg/ha a.i.), compared to glyphosate (3.89 kg/ha a.i.) and 2,4-D (3.35 kg/ha a.i.) wich were associated with surfactants and applied in several occasions. Boxes made of cement and asbestos with substract and plants collected from a dam located in the region of Americana (SP) were used as support medium. Herbicides were sprayed in water hyacinth shoots when the biomass weight per unit of area and the size of the pIants were: 2 kg/m2 (5-10 and 15-30 cm); 7 kg/m2 (5-10 cm); 9 kg/m2 (10-15 cm) and 12 kgm2 (15-30 cm) respectively. In the water Iettuce the biomass wright and pIant size were 2,5 kg/m2 (5-10 and 10-15 cm); 5 kg/m2 (5-10 and 10-15 cm) and 7 kg/m2 (15-20 cm) respectiveIy for the biomass weight of per unit of area and the diameter of the pIant. During 50 days after applications (DAA) the weed controI evaluated the portion above the water surfaee using a visual device. The evoIution of the shoot biomass was measured as well. The water hyacinth was eliminated by the three herbicides when applied to the weeds with the density of 2 kg/m2 as follows: at 28 DAA in pIants with 5-10 em and at 42 DAA for the two Iarger rates of the glufosinate-ammonium. In the case of pIants with 15-30 cm the death of the weeds was achieved by glyphosate at 50 DAA and 2,4-D at 42 DAA. For the vegetabIes with 2.5 kg/m2, the water lettuce was eliminated only by the glufosinate-ammonium and glyphosate after 28 DAA. This happened in pIants with 5-10 cm for both herbicides and for pIants with 10-15 em for glyphosate. In other cases and for both pIants the herbicides reduced the growth rate ofthe vegetabIe biomass, specially at 28 DAA, when the results varied according to the application time or herbicide rate. The control leveIs found for both species were influenced by the pIant size and biomass weight at the momment of applieation. For pIants of equal size the best results were achieved with the ones with less weight. In the case of plants with the same weight the best results were found in the smaller ones

This research was realized with the purpose of studying the behavior of four herbicides in simulated irrigation conditions, observing its movement through the soil layers, and the possible effects on the initial development of sugarcane, variety NA56-79. To achieve these purposes, three experiments were conducted in greenhouse conditions, using a Dark Red Latosol, with 2.85% of organic matter, 54% of clay, 29% of silt and 17% of sand. The herbicides used in the experiments were: ametryn (2,8 kg a.i./ha); diuron (2,8 kg a.i./ha); tebuthiuron (1,2 kg a.i./ha) and terbacila (0,8 kg a.i./ha). The water levels used in the experiments I and III were 30, 45 and 60 mm. In the experiment II, three herbicide placements were used: in the surface of the soil; incorporated in the soil above the sugarcane seed-piece; and incorporated in the soil below the sugarcane seed-piece. In the experiments I and II the results were evaluated by: fresh and dry weight of the sugarcane shoots; fresh and dry weight of the sugarcane roots; length of the sugarcane roots and height of the sugarcane shoots. In the experiment III were it was used soil columns to determine the herbicides leaching, cucumber was used as an indicator of the herbicides presence, and the evaluations were fresh and dry weight of cucumber plants. The effect of the water levels and the herbicides application on the initial development of sugarcane, was not significant for none of the herbicides or water levels, but when the herbicides were put in contact with the sugarcane roots, they occasioned reduction on the development of the plants, notably the diuron that was responsible for the biggest reductions. In respect to the herbicides leaching, it was observed that tebuthiuron and terbacila reached a depth of 20 cm in the soil, while diuron and ametryn were restricted to the first 10 cm of depth in the soil. The leaching of the herbicides was positively affected by the raise of the water levels

These studies were carried out with imazapyr, a non-selective herbicide of post-emergence application, with the following objectives: a) to evaluate its activity in two situations which require an effective and long-lasting weed control: railroad and industrial site; b) to determine its effectiveness on two of the world's worst weeds: nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) and bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.). To achieve the objectives, four experiments were carried out in the field: one on railroad, one on industrial site, one on a field infested with nutsedge and one on a field infested with bermudagrass. Two experiments were also conducted in greenhouse with purple nutsedge, aiming to get information about the most adequate time and most appropriate growth stage to spray. The experiment on railroad was carried out in Campinas, SP, where imazapyr at 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 kg/ha was compared with tebuthiuron, bromacil + diuron and karbutilate, all at 20.0 kg/ha. The experiment on industrial site was conducted in Paulinia, SP, and imazapyr at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 kg /ha was compared with tebuthiuron and bromacil + diuron at 8.0 kg/ha and karbutilate at 12.0 kg/ha. The experiment on nutsedge was set up in Paulinia, where imazapyr was applied at 0.25 + 0.25, 0.5 + 0.5, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 kg/ha and compared with MSMA at 2.88 kg/ha and glyphosate at 2.16 kg/ha. The experiment on bermudagrass was carried out in Piracicaba, SP, imazapyr being applied at 0.125 + 0.125, 0.25 + 0.25, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 kg/ha and compared with glyphosate at 2.52 kg/ha, dalapon at 8.50 kg/ha, and fluazifop-butyl at 0.50 kg/ha. The experiments in greenhouse with nutsedge were carried out in Piracicaba, and imazapyr was checked at 0.25 and 0.50 kg/ha on 5 different growth stages of nutsedge: pre-emergence, and 3, 6, 9 and 12 leaves. The results showed that imazapyr is a broad-spectrum herbicide, with activity in both annual and perennial grass and broadleaved weeds, with persistent residual action, which made possible the achievement of an effective and long-lasting weed control. On railroad, imazapyr at 2.0 kg/ha provided complete weed control during 6 months, whereas at 4.0 kg/ha an effective control was achieved up to 9 months. The performance of imazapyr at 4.0 kg/ha was slightly inferior to tebuthiuron and about the same as bromacil + diuron and karbutilate. On industrial site, imazapyr gave complete weed control during 1 year at 2.0 kg/ha and 6 months at 1.0 kg/ha. At 2.0 kg/ha, imazapyr performed slightly better than tebuthiuron and was consistently superior to bromacil + diuron and karbutilate. Bermudagrass was fully controlled by imazapyr at 0.25 kg/ha for 4 months. The experiment couldn't be assessed any further because it was reached by a fire. At all tested rates, control provided by imazapyr was superior to that of glyphosate, dalapon and fluazifop-butyl. The studies carried out with purple nutsedge in the field and greenhouse demonstrated that both aerial and underground organs are killed by imazapyr, thus reducing regrowth drastically. At 6 months after application, nutsedge was effectively controlled by imazapyr at 0.25 + 0.25 kg/ha in the field where, at all tested rates, it was superior to glyphosate and MSMA. The studies conducted in greenhouse showed that imazapyr has a considerable activity on nutsedge when applied pre-emergence. Those studies revealed that the most appropriate growth stage to s 6 to 9 leaves, and in the fall from 3 to 6 leaves. It was also found that applications made in the spring kill more tubers than applications made in fall. The experiments carried out on bermudagrass and nutsedge demonstrated that the split method (two applications at half rate each, applied 40 days apart) enhanced imazapyr activity compared to a single rate

The chemical management of plant pests in the planting system with pre-sprouted sugarcane seedlings substantiates the hypothesis that the crop is more susceptible to toxicity by herbicides in pre-planting applications, due to the roots of the seedlings being transferred in direct contact with the soil solution treated with the herbicides applied in the pre-emergence stage. Therefore, this work was prepared with two goals: (1) to assess the selectivity of the herbicide sulfentrazone when applied to a sugarcane planting area in the pre-sprouted seedlings system with application in the pre-planting stage using five rates (200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 g a.i. ha-1); (2) to assess the selectivity of growing rates of clomazone (270, 540, 1080, 2160 and 4320 g a.i. ha-1), when applied in the pre-planting stage for pre-sprouted seedlings. The experiments were developed in São Martinho sugar mills, next to the town of Motuca (SP), under natural weather conditions, in the period from October 2015 to September 2016. The experimental design was done in blocks at random, with four repetitions. The herbicides were applied on the day prior to the planting of the pre-sprouted seedlings, where the CTC 11 strain was used, which seedlings were transferred into parcels comprised of 6 lines of 10 m, spaced by 1.5 m. Visual assessments were made 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after the treatment application (DAA), a visual grading scale between 0 and 100% was also used. In the quantitative assessments, the parameters for height of the plants (cm), at 30, 60, 90 and 120 DAA, and tillering at 60, 90 and 120 DAA, were evaluated. In all assessed periods, a direct reading was performed using the chlorophyll meter, SPAD brand. At 330 DAA, the entire productivity (t ha-1) of the parcels was assessed through the manual cut and later weighing with the aid of a load cell, and strips with ten sugarcanes were collected for the performance of qualitative parameters (Brix, Pol, Purity and ATR). In both works, the phytotoxicity and productivity data were previously converted by the log-logistic regression, observing the principle of data normalization, identifying the selective rates for the crop. It was found that herbicides sulfentrazone (800 g a.i ha-1), and clomazone (1080 g a.i. ha-1), which are rates commercially used in the conventional planting through sugarcane billets, presented slight symptoms of phytotoxicity in the first assessments, but with the growth and development of the seedlings, they did not show a difference in height, tillering, SPAD index, and in the yield; and the technological characteristics of the stalks did not present significant differences. Therefore, the herbicides sulfentrazone and clomazone were selective to the sugarcane seedlings in the pre-sprouted seedlings (MPB) system when applied in the pre-planting stage for CTC 11
