Some physical properties and Vickers hardness measurements of Fe diffusion-doped Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr1.9Ca2.1Cu3Oy superconductors
In this study we have investigated the influence of iron diffusion and diffusion-annealing time on the mechanical and the superconducting properties of bulk Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr1.9Ca2.1Cu3Oy superconductors by performing X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Vickers hardness, dc resistivity (ρ-T) and critical current density (Jc) measurements. The samples are prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. Doping of Bi-2223 was carried out by means of iron diffusion during sintering from an evaporated iron film on pellets. Then, the Fe layered superconducting samples were annealed at 830 °C for 10, 30 and 60 h. The mechanical properties of the compounds have been investigated by measuring the Vickers hardness (Hv). The mechanical properties of the samples were found to be load dependent. The load independent Vickers hardness (H0), Young’s modulus (E), yield strength (Y), and fracture toughness (KIC) values of the samples are calculated. These all measurements showed that the values of the Vickers hardness, critical current density, and critical transition temperature and lattice parameter c increased with increasing Fe doping and diffusion-annealing time.https://doi.org/10.1007/s10854-011-0580-xhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10854-011-0580-

Amenable L-2-Theoretic Methods and Knot Concordance
We reveal new structures in the topological knot concordance group. As a key ingredient, we develop obstructions using L-2-theoretic methods for amenable groups in Strebel's class recently introduced by Orr and the author. Concerning (h)-solvable knots, which are defined in terms of certain Whitney towers of height h in bounding 4-manifolds, we show the following: for any n>1, there are (n)-solvable but non-(n. 5)-solvable (and therefore nonslice) knots, which are not detected by prior methods using Cochran-Orr-Teichner L-2-signature obstructions as well as Levine algebraic obstructions and Casson-Gordon invariants.X1197sciescopu
Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model
This article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. A simulation result shows a finding that is consistent with an analytical result for a state of equilibrium while it also shows different possible equilibria.Dynamics, Network, Game Theory, Model,Simulation, Equilibrium, Complexity

Engineering Framework to Utilize Miniaturized Charpy Type SE(B) Specimens to Predict Jc of Full Sized Specimens
AbstractThis paper introduces our experience of using miniature Charpy type SE(B) specimen in obtaining fracture toughness Jc of a material in the ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) region. Width W x thickness B of 2 x 2 mm, 3 x 3 mm and 10 x 10 mm were chosen as miniature specimens and 25 x 25 mm were chosen as full sized specimen. 0.55% carbon steel JIS S55C, whose tensile to yield stress ratio σTS/σYS was equal to 1.8 was chosen as a material to simulate a degraded (embrittled) material in the DBTT region. Focus was placed on whether cleavage fracture could be predicted for these miniaturized specimens. Another focus was placed on whether the Jc of full sized specimen is predictable from the test results of the miniature sized specimens, in case cleavage fracture were observed. The results showed that the modified Ritch-Knott-Rice (RKR) failure criterion (which predicts the onset of cleavage fracture when the crack opening stress measured at 4 times the crack-tip opening displacement exceeds this σ22c) could predict whether cleavage fracture would occur or not. Another finding was that, in case cleavage fracture was observed though, the critical value σ22c in the modified RKR failure criterion was independent of specimen size, and thus, Jc of the full sized specimen is predictable from the miniature specimen test results, though M = (W-a)σYS/Jc was smaller than ASTM E1921 requirement of 30. Here, a and σYS are crack length and yield strength, respectively
Building A Biofoundry
A biofoundry provides automation and analytics infrastructure to support the engineering of biological systems. It allows scientists to perform synthetic biology and aligned experimentation on a high-throughput scale, massively increasing the solution space that can be examined for any given problem or question. However, establishing a biofoundry is a challenging undertaking, with numerous technical and operational considerations that must be addressed. Using collated learnings, here we outline several considerations that should be addressed prior to and during establishment. These include drivers for establishment, institutional models, funding and revenue models, personnel, hardware and software, data management, interoperability, client engagement, and biosecurity issues. The high cost of establishment and operation means that developing a long-term business model for biofoundry sustainability in the context of funding frameworks, actual and potential client base, and costing structure is critical. Moreover, since biofoundries are leading a conceptual shift in experimental design for bioengineering, sustained outreach and engagement with the research community is needed to grow the client base. Recognition of the significant, long-term financial investment required and an understanding of the complexities of operationalization is critical for a sustainable biofoundry venture. To ensure state-of-the-art technology is integrated into planning, extensive engagement with existing facilities and community groups, such as the Global Biofoundries Alliance, is recommended.Full Tex
WISDOM: history and early demise - was it inevitable?
In 1989, the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) agreed that, if feasible, a randomized controlled trial to assess the long-term risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was a priority. Feasibility work began in 1990 and demonstrated that a large-scale multicenter trial was possible. An application for funding for a main trial was submitted to MRC in 1993 and, after extensive review, funding was released in late 1996. Set-up work for the trial - the Women's International Study of long Duration Oestrogen after Menopause (WISDOM) - began in 1997 with recruitment in 1999. In October 2002, following the early discontinuation of one arm of the US Women's Health Initiative HRT trial, the MRC decided to stop the WISDOM trial. This article, by the principal UK investigators of WISDOM, sets out the background and history of the trial
Effect of Mo on microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC-Ni-based cermets produced by combustion synthesis impact forging technique
The effect of Mo additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC-30 wt.% Ni cermets produced by the combustion synthesis-impact forging technique was investigated. The Mo content was varied between 0 and 10 wt.%, in 2 wt.% increments. Cylindrical tiles 6.35 cm in diameter and 1.27 cm thick were produced with apparent densities above 99%. Microscopically, the addition of Mo resulted in a decrease in the number of microstructural defects such as interphase debonding and binder microcracking. The microstructure consisted of a spheroidal carbide phase with a high degree of contiguity (decreasing with increasing Mo content). The Mo additions did not have a profound effect on the carbide phase morphologies (faceted vs. spheroidal), mean apparent particle diameters (3.5 mu m-4.5 mu m), or particle size distribution Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed Mo preferentially in the carbide phase, with trace amounts in the Ni alloy binder. A significant amount of Ti was found in solution with Ni. Vickers' microhardness did not vary significantly with Mo content and was approximately 13 GPa. Compressive strength, transverse rupture strength, fracture toughness, and Young's moduli increased with increasing Mo content; the mean values for the 8 wt.% Mo material were approximately 3400 MPa, 1300 MPa, 22 MPa m(1/2), and 340 GPa respectively. The beneficial effect of Mo is due to the improved wettability of the Ni alloy binder on the carbide phase. Improved wettability results in a decrease in detrimental microstructural defects and an increase in the interphase bond strength and phase uniformity
Shifting attention in viewer- and object-based reference frames after unilateral brain injury
The aims of the present study were to investigate the respective roles that object- and viewer-based reference frames play in reorienting visual attention, and to assess their influence after unilateral brain injury. To do so, we studied 16 right hemisphere injured (RHI) and 13 left hemisphere injured (LHI) patients. We used a cueing design that manipulates the location of cues and targets relative to a display comprised of two rectangles (i.e., objects). Unlike previous studies with patients, we presented all cues at midline rather than in the left or right visual fields. Thus, in the critical conditions in which targets were presented laterally, reorienting of attention was always from a midline cue. Performance was measured for lateralized target detection as a function of viewer-based (contra- and ipsilesional sides) and object-based (requiring reorienting within or between objects) reference frames. As expected, contralesional detection was slower than ipsilesional detection for the patients. More importantly, objects influenced target detection differently in the contralesional and ipsilesional fields. Contralesionally, reorienting to a target within the cued object took longer than reorienting to a target in the same location but in the uncued object. This finding is consistent with object-based neglect. Ipsilesionally, the means were in the opposite direction. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in object-based influences between the patient groups (RHI vs. LHI). These findings are discussed in the context of reference frames used in reorienting attention for target detection
