Vestibular compensation: The role of Otolith System | [Il compenso vestibolare: Il ruolo del Sistema Otolitico]
Otolith compensation in animals has been amply demonstrated with the eccentric VOR study after selective otolith deafferentation. When the otolith system is damaged for experiment there is a deficiency of otolith compensation that demonstrates the essential role of commissural fibres from two otological sytems. In a human experimental model, working with dark linear movements along interneural axis, a complete OOR restoration after 6-10 weeks has been reported. The presence of concomitant otolith damage and monolateral canalar damage can condition a more persistant asymmetry of the VOR. The Spinal Otolith System has a relevant contribution to static and dynamic postural function. VEMPs, VEPPs, subjective visual vertical, static posturography, Head Heave Test (HHT) are better indicators of residual activity and functional restoration of otolith receptors after vestibular damage
Tecniche strumentali per la caratterizzazione radiologica dei materiali: stato dell'arte e stato della pratica.
Il punto della situazione delle prestazioni delle tecniche strumentali per la caratterizzazione dei rifiuti nucleari. Relazione su invito AIRP. Nella prima parte (“stato dell’arte”) viene presentata una rassegna delle tecniche strumentali utilizzate per la caratterizzazione radiologica dei materiali originati dalla disattivazione di impianti nucleari (materiali allontanabili e rifiuti radioattivi). Le tecniche strumentali vengono distinte in “distruttive” e “non distruttive”, in tecniche “da laboratorio” e “sul campo”. Vengono affrontati i problemi degli “scaling factors” (fattori di correlazione), delle strategie di campionamento preliminari alle misure, delle metodologie di calcolo della Minima Attività Rivelabile e delle metodologie di interpretazione dei risultati. Nella seconda parte (“stato della pratica”) vengono evidenziate difficoltà che possono manifestarsi nell’applicazione pratica delle tecniche e che possono condurre ad un peggioramento della Minima Attività Rivelabile della tecnica strumentale
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Defect-oriented reconstruction after transoral robotic surgery for oropharyngeal cancer: a case series and review of the literature
Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a fascinating new technique that has been shown to be a safe and feasible treatment for selected oropharyngeal cancers. Furthermore, TORS might offer some advantages in selected locoregionally advanced cancers. Thus, the patient selection is the keypoint for the useful application of TORS. However, the reconstruction of large oropharyngeal defects is challenging due to the restoration of velopharyngeal competency and swallowing. Moreover, the absence of mandibular splitting increases the difficulties faced by reconstructive surgeons. The paradigm for oropharyngeal reconstruction has undergone changes paralleling reflecting the overall change in the trend of the treatment alternatives over the last few decades. Flap choice and harvesting should be tailored to obtain significant advantages both in functional terms and for easy insetting. In this review, we analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the various flaps used in TORS framework with particular regards on our preliminary experience
The natural evolution of endoscopic approaches in skull base surgery: robotic-assisted surgery?
The current surgical trend is to expand the variety of minimally invasive approaches and, in particular, the possible applications of robotic systems in head and neck surgery. This is particularly intriguing in skull base regions. In this paper, we review the current literature and propose personal considerations on the role of robotic techniques in this field. A brief description of our personal preclinical experience on skull base robotic dissection represents the basis for further considerations. We are convinced that the advantages of robotic surgery applied to the posterior cranial fossa are similar to those already clinically experienced in other areas (oropharynx, tongue base), in terms of tremor-free, bimanual, precise dissection: the implementation of instruments for bony work and resolving current drawbacks will definitely increase the applicability of such a system in forthcoming years
