Lagoons and coastal wetlands in the global change context: impacts and management issues
Chemical composition and decomposition of Ulva rigida in a coastal lagoon (Sacca di Goro, Po River Delta)
This paper deals with a preliminary study carried out in 1989 in a Po River Delta lagoon (Sacca di Goro) whose trophic state was mainly related to the growth and decomposition of the macroalga Ulva rigida. The elemental composition (C, N and P) and the ATP content of macroalgae were studied at three stations in the lagoon. Laboratory experiments on the decomposition of macroalgal thalli and the related nutrient regeneration were also carried out. Nitrogen storage during the growing phase and short-term phosphorus release during early decomposition appear to play a prominent role in the seasonal trends of the lagoon's trophic state
