Microalgae of the genus Nannochloropsis: Chemical composition and functional implications for human nutrition
The richness of bioactive compounds in microalgae has long inspired their exploitation for human nutrition. However, very few species are authorized for this use to date. Microalgae of the genus Nannochloropsis are already exploited in aquaculture for their high content in PUFAs, carotenoids, polyphenols and vitamins. These molecules can contribute to delay aging processes and prevent the onset of many metabolic disorders triggered by unhealthy lifestyles and diets with an excess of saturated fatty acids. Moreover, Nannochloropsis is efficiently cultivated at an industrial scale in photobioreactors, without the use of pesticides and preventing biological or chemical contaminations. Here, information on its chemical composition, safety and toxicology is discussed. Nannochloropsis can be an eco-sustainable alternative to fishery products as source of bioactive compounds. Importantly, the daily consumption of few grams of biomass would result in a regular dietary intake of essential molecules for the prevention of cardiovascular pathologies and other disorders
Bare iron oxide nanoparticles: Surface tunability for biomedical, sensing and environmental applications
Surface modification is widely assumed as a mandatory prerequisite for the real applicability of iron oxide nanoparticles. This is aimed to endow prolonged stability, electrolyte and pH tolerance as well as a desired specific surface chemistry for further functionalization to these materials. Nevertheless, coating processes have negative consequences on the sustainability of nanomaterial production contributing to high costs, heavy environmental impact and difficult scalability. In this view, bare iron oxide nanoparticles (BIONs) are arousing an increasing interest and the properties and advantages of pristine surface chemistry of iron oxide are becoming popular among the scientific community. In the authors' knowledge, rare efforts were dedicated to the use of BIONs in biomedicine, biotechnology, food industry and environmental remediation. Furthermore, literature lacks examples highlighting the potential of BIONs as platforms for the creation of more complex nanostructured architectures, and emerging properties achievable by the direct manipulation of pristine iron oxide surfaces have been little studied. Based on authors' background on BIONs, the present review is aimed at providing hints on the future expansion of these nanomaterials emphasizing the opportunities achievable by tuning their pristine surfaces

Young adult migrants’ representation of ethnic, gender and generational disadvantage in Italy*
The literature on the division of labour and labour market segmentation has generally stressed that young people and migrants are, for different reasons, the most disadvantaged categories of workers. Faced with these inequalities, numerous studies have investigated how young people represent and understand their social disadvantage. Similar research on migrant workers is very limited, however, especially as regards young migrants. This article aims to contribute to filling this gap. Our goal is to examine how young adult migrants represent their experiences of ethnic, gender and generational disadvantage and discrimination in the occupational domain. The paper is based on an analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with young adult migrants of Moroccan and Romanian origin living in the Veneto region of Italy
Toward the specificity of bare nanomaterial surfaces for protein corona formation
Aiming at creating smart nanomaterials for biomedical applications, nanotechnology aspires to develop a new generation of nanomaterials with the ability to recognize different biological components in a complex environment. It is common opinion that nanomaterials must be coated with organic or inorganic layers as a mandatory prerequisite for applications in biological systems. Thus, it is the nanomaterial surface coating that predominantly controls the nanomaterial fate in the biological environment. In the last decades, interdisciplinary studies involving not only life sciences, but all branches of scientific research, provided hints for obtaining uncoated inorganic materials able to interact with biological systems with high complexity and selectivity. Herein, the fragmentary literature on the interactions between bare abiotic materials and biological components is reviewed. Moreover, the most relevant examples of selective binding and the conceptualization of the general principles behind recognition mechanisms were provided. Nanoparticle features, such as crystalline facets, density and distribution of surface chemical groups, and surface roughness and topography were encompassed for deepening the comprehension of the general concept of recognition patterns
Benign prostatic hypertrophy: the therapeutic options.
BPH is a very diffuse condition among males increasing in incidence with the age. This explains the large interest in the evaluation of the different strategies concerning BPH treatment. The gold standard has still to be considered the transurethral resection of the prostate which all the other treatments must be compared to. More recently as alternatives to the invasive therapy, so called minimally invasive treatments have been proposed (thermotherapy, prostate dilatation, intraprostatic stents) whose real significance is not completely evaluable yet. As far as medical treatment is concerned, phyto-therapeutic agents have been partially replaced by different substances (alfa- blockers; 5-alfa reductase blockers) that are expected to have a promising future
