    Get PDF
Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Royce and Bernstein on Evil

    Get PDF
This article has a twofold purpose. On the one hand, it aims to reconstruct Josiah Royce’s views on evil. On the other hand, it intends to examine these Roycean views within the framework of Richard Bernstein’s work, particularly his books Radical Evil: a Philosophical Investigation and The Abuse of Evil. I conclude that, despite some shortcomings regarding his notion of evil, Royce’s philosophy should be recovered as a classical voice in order to fight against the abuse of evil.Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Sola fides at the Core of Varieties: Luther as Religious Genius in William James's Thought?

The purpose of this article is to show the great influence of Luther's conception of religion on James' Varieties of Religious Experience. I will argue that James's conception of religion should be interpreted as a philosophical course of Lutheranism; and that, as a course of Lutheranism, James's conception of religion infers the most radical consequences of the Lutheran principle of sola fides.Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. William James’ conception of religion in Josiah Royce’s mature thought: three approaches

    Get PDF
A person who only reads Josiah Royce’s (1995 [1908]) The Philosophy of Loyalty and (2011 [1913]) The Problem of Christianity could easily assume that William James’ philosophy takes opposite views to Roycean ones on every fundamental issue with which they deal. Absolutism, on the Roycean hand, and individualism, on the Jamesian hand, are the labels that seems to articulate two contrary approaches to philosophy: the stress on the “eternal truths” and “the Community of Interpretation” within Royce’s approach, the emphasis on “provisional truths” and “individuals’ experience” for James’ view. However, consideration of Royce’s insightful works after James’ death challenges this assumption. After 1910 Royce acknowledges the unambiguous influence of James on his thought as well as the role of Jamesian philosophy for the development of his own idealism.Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Consequências do Luteranismo: James e Rorty sobre o Sagrado

The primary object of this article is to analyze how William James and Richard Rorty conceive the sacred. The latter explicitly follows in his philosophy of religion a Jamesian path, which stresses the importance of privatizing religion. I will put forward two arguments against this interpretation: first, that James’s notion of self-surrender is incompatible with the Rortyan idea of privatization; second, that this notion of selfsurrender has Lutheran roots in James’s Varieties of Religious Experience.O objeto principal deste artigo é analisar como William James e Richard Rorty concebem o sagrado. Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Art as Occupations: Two Neglected Roots of John Dewey's Aesthetics

Our purpose in this paper is to analyze two neglected roots of Dewey's aesthetics: his fragmentary or piecemeal aesthetics and its links with education. Bearing this in mind, we put forward a twofold hypothesis. Firstly, that there is a link between this fragmentary aesthetics and education, which has neither been clearly established by Dewey nor systematically examined in the literature. Secondly, that some of Dewey's educational conceptions -particularly the coherent articulation of occupations, art teaching and overcoming of the vocational-humanistic education dichotomy- are essential to a reevaluation of his aesthetics from a contemporary perspective.Fil: Campeotto, Fabio. Voluntarism and Self-surrender in William James’s Conception of Religion

    Get PDF
In this work I hold that William James’s conception of religion is divided between what could be identified as his voluntarism and his idea of self-surrender. In my approach, James’s voluntarism is the heart of The Will to Believe, whereas the idea of self-surrender is the key to understand The Varieties of Religious Experience. These two works respond to a tension in James’s philosophy and can be seen as two antagonistic intellectual projects. The analysis of this inner tension in James’s conception of religion is the core of this paper. I will also state that his self-surrender notion, unlike his voluntarism, allows us to visualize an essential aspect of James’s conception, that is to say, its morbid aspect.Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Sacred/profane: the durkheimian aspect of William James's Philosophy of religion

    Get PDF
Without disregarding the differences between both perspectives, my hypothesis in this article is that James's philosophy of religion has a Durkheimian aspect. As it is well known, Durkheim considers the distinction between the sacred and the profane to be the axis of religion. For James, on the other hand, the core of religion seems to be the individual relationship with the deity, as mentioned before. The point of contact between both conceptions lies in the fact that the Jamesian definition implies a clear distinction between the sacred and the profane, which is a prototypically Durkheimian one which helps to tint the canonical version of a James who is irremediably imbued with individual Protestantism. In other words, the sacred/profane distinction is essential for James's philosophy of religion, and this point is best appreciated in his treatment of morality. Besides, this distinction is of vital importance to understand the relationships of James's philosophy with conservative as well as with liberal Protestantism. My argument unfolds in five parts. In the first one (Durkheim interprets James) I present essential aspects of the French sociologist's criticism of the pragmatist; in the second (Durkheim interprets religion) I characterize the axis of religion according to Durkheim, that is, the distinction between the sacred and the profane; in the third section (James: Durkheimianism and Individualism) I present some of the essential aspects of James's philosophy of religion and I advance my main hypothesis, namely that there is a Durkheimian aspect in James's philosophy of religion; in the fourth section (James and Durkheim: past, present, and future of religion) I briefly examine the importance of the Durkheimian aspect of the Jamesian conception of religion for its relationship with Protestantism. Finally, I put forward some conclusions.Fil: Viale, Claudio Marcelo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Centro Científico Tecnológico Conicet - Córdoba.
