Software Performance Engineering in Complex Distributed Systems
No full textPerformance is a make-or-break quality for software. When making changes it is essential to ensure no performance regression has occurred i.e. the program performs more slowly or consumes more resources than previous versions. Tribler is the result of ten years scientific research in complex distributed systems. Over the course of years Tribler’s performance has fallen below acceptable user experience levels, mainly because there is a lack of software performance engineering. In this work, we lay the foundations for a regression testing systems that allows developers to continuously monitor the metrics that are having the most impact on the performance of Tribler. Applying this system gave us a deep insight in the greatest bottleneck of the performance of Tribler: synchronous, blocking disk operations. Resolution of this bottleneck includes a major refactoring effort of the message synchronization system Dispersy. Implementation of a novel, non-blocking disk operation framework allowed us to increase the throughput of Tribler’s API by up to 150% and reduce its response times by up to 57.5%.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer ScienceSoftware TechnologyDistributed System

No full textTribler is a decentralized peer-to-peer file sharing system. Recently the Tribler development team has introduced anonymous internet communication using a Tor-like protocol in their trial version. The goal of our bachelor project is to port this technology to Android devices. This is a challenging task because cross-compiling the necessary libraries to the ARM CPU architecture is uncharted territory. We have successfully ported all dependencies of Tribler to Android. An application called Android Tor Tribler Tunneling (AT3) has been developed that tests whether these libraries work. This application downloads a test torrent and measures information such as CPU usage and download speed. Based on this information we have concluded that it is currently not viable to run the anonymous tunnels on an Android smartphone. Creating circuits with several hops that use encryption is very computationally expensive and modern smartphones can hardly keep up. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Chamulteon: Coordinated Auto-Scaling of Micro-Services
No full textNowadays, in order to keep track of the fast-changing requirements of Internet applications, auto-scaling is used as an essential mechanism for adapting the number of provisioned resources to the resource demand. The straightforward approach is to deploy a set of common and opensource single-service auto-scalers for each service independently. However, this deployment leads to problems such as bottleneckshifting and increased oscillations. Existing auto-scalers that scale applications consisting of multiple services are kept closed-source. To face these challenges, we first survey existing auto-scalers and highlight current challenges. Then, we introduce Chamulteon, a redesign of our previously introduced mechanism, which can scale applications consisting of multiple services in a coordinated manner. We evaluate Chamulteon against four different wellcited auto-scalers in four sets of measurement-based experiments where we use diverse environments (VM vs. Docker), real-world traces, and vary the scale of the demanded resources. Overall, Chamulteon achieves the best auto-scaling performance based on established user-oriented and endorsed elasticity metrics.Data-Intensive System

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
