In conversation with Gabriele Werner-Felmayer, the social anthropologist and gender researcher Veronika Siegl (Vienna) provides insight into her postdoctoral project, in which she examines issues of inequality and self-determination in reproductive medicine. Siegl explains how the controversial practice of commercial surrogacy can be understood as a form of "ethical labor." Veronika Krepsová Školitel PharmDr. Veronika Nováková, Ph.D. Název rigorózní práce Příprava a studium spektrálních a fotofyzikálních vlastností nového ve vodě rozpustného azaftalocyaninu nesoucího cukerné jednotky na periferii Azaftalocyaniny (AzaPc), aza-analogy ftalocyaninů, jsou makrocyklické molekuly s rozsáhlým systémem konjugovaných vazeb se zajímavými spektrálními a fotofyzikálními vlastnostmi využitelnými v oblasti fotodynamické terapii. Důležitou podmínkou pro jejich využití v této aplikaci je zajistit rozpustnost ve vodném prostředí, aniž by se ztratila jejich fotodynamická aktivita. Rozpustnosti ve vodě lze dosáhnout zavedením hydrofilních substituentů na periferii makrocyklu. Hydrofilní substituenty mohou být nabité (anionické, kationické) nebo nenabité (nesoucí např. hydroxyl). Cílem této rigorózní práce bylo připravit a studovat vlastnosti ve vodě rozpustného AzaPc nesoucího na periferii nenabité substituenty, konkrétně cukerné jednotky, čímž lze získat AzaPc s 32 hydroxylovými skupinami na periferii. Jako centrální kation byl zvolen zinečnatý kationt, protože zinečnaté komplexy AzaPc jsou stabilní a zaručují výhodné fotofyzikální vlastnosti. An important condition for their use in this application is to provide solubility in an aqueous medium without losing their photodynamic activity. Water solubility can be achieved by the introduction of hydrophilic substituents on the periphery of the macrocycle. Hydrophilic substituents may be charged (anionic, cationic) or uncharged (e.g. hydroxyl-bearing). The aim of this thesis was to prepare and to study the properties of the water-soluble AzaPc bearing uncharged substituents on periphery, concretely saccharide unit, leading to AzaPc with 32 hydroxyl groups on the periphery. Prof. RNDr. Veronika Opletalová, Ph.D. Title of Thesis: Study of new acetylcholinesterase modulators. Organophosphorus compounds are chemically organophosphates or organophosphonates. They have been widely used as a pesticides but because of their high toxicity and relatively cheap and easy synthesis they can be easily misused as chemical weapons - nerve paralytic compounds. Toxic effect of these compounds is based on irreversible inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In case of intoxication by these compounds anticholinergic drugs (atropin) and reactivators of AChE are usually used as antidots. The effect of the reactivators is based on splitting the complex enzyme-inhibitor. Pralidoxim, trimedoxim, obidoxim and asoxim (HI-6) are still the most often used reactivators all over the world. They are the compounds which contain oxime group and one or two quarternary nitrogens in their molecule, what ensures that their affinity to AChE will be strong enough. Screening and synthesis of new more effective broad-spectrum reactivators of AChE with lower side effects is still very actual and discussed theme. Strategy..
